I'm not real big on Stackhouse. I wouldn't say that to his face though. I don't think that the Texans are serious about him - it is really a situation where they want to put the heat on Baxter a little to get back into the groove. Don't bank on him making it through opening day.

Offseason conditioning and special teams participation will be very important in determining who stays and who gets cut. If someone comes to camp slightly out of shape or gets nicked up during camp and misses valuable time he will find himself without a job. Also, backup RB's and FB's are required to be major contributors on special teams, so if someone can stand out as a blocker and tackler in return and coverage units he can wrap up a spot.

Competition for spots is a good thing.
I agree completely.

I wish we could get more information about the Texans' plans on special teams - who is returning kicks & punts - who are the gunners, besides Vaughan and Bell. I think there will be some good competition on special teams and that will make it much easier to predict roster spots.

I wouldnt be surprised to see 2 RBs and 2 FBs on the roster come opening day. RBs - DD and Hollings FBs- Baxter (he played RB in college, so he could double if needed) and Norris, with Wells and Stackhouse being released

I don't see that happening because league requires 3 RB's and 1 FB on the roster. I cannot see us carrying 4 players in the backfield, which is league minimum. I don't know anything about Stackhouse, but I looked at his NFL and college career stats and he seems to have a pretty good yards per carry average for a FB IMO, almost 4.5 in college and over 5.0 in the NFL, although he hasn't seen much action in the NFL.

When did the league start requiring you carry a certain amount of players per position?

Everyone in the NFL is required to carry a certain number of active players at each position, I thought.

Yeah I think that all NFL teams are required to have a certain number of active players at a position. It's usually about one more than is absolutely neccessary with the exception of safety I believe.

If this is the case, I bet Wells is looking for employment after camp. Baxter could fill two rolls, Depth at FB and ShortYardage. I like this idea, but are Baxter and Stackhouse willing to do Special Teams, like Wells and Comella did last year?

Where did you get that? Madden Football? I remember the Oilers had a couple years with no TEs or FBs on the roster.

Default NFL Roster Rules...

The only demands that the NFL puts on roster caps is the total numbers activated for each game and the number on the practice squad. It is a misconception that you are required to have X number of whatever type player active for a game, as far as the league is concerned you could have no QBs on the roster and have a O-lineman taking the snaps as long as he is on the activated list for that days game.
