I donno, these are grown men, not high school kids. They cash their check and don't worry about what Daddy is saying. There are lots of low key guys who have done well from Tom Landry, to Tony Dungy. I think ranting coaches is a highly overrated element.

I don't think folks are saying a "Ranting Coach" Vinny, but rather one that on occasion, and at the right time, kicks a little tail. The ranters get tuned out after awhile, but a calm coach that lets it fly when thing are going in the dumper can get things moving.

I think that is a rash generalization. Different people respond to different types of motivation. For myself, a ranter as a boss does not work. For others, someone constantly has to be on their butt or no work gets done. Most are somewhere in between. All I know is when Deloach came to the sideline, I would have lit into him like there was no tomorrow, and I would have made sure as many players as possible heard it. Then I would have benched his arse the rest of the game, and benched him next week to boot. Someone needs to give these guys a good swift kick, and Capers ain't doing it!

The key from a coach/management idea is to stay in your personality. If you are generally calm and then explode when something in particular happens it is more likely to work. People can see through if you faking angry or outward energy "to fire up the troops." even when something that may send someone else into a rage. Also, if you are a Tony dungy it often pays to have couple Herm Edwards around for (which he did) to keep things in balance.

Also, I am going to argue that despite the physical nature of football and emotion we often see that most players have been around ranters enough , that it is a sort of old hat by the time they are 28 year old adults.

Yeah, that Belichick guy's a total fireball. Thank goodness he chews out his players regularly. Without emotion, how would he possibly succeed?

I don't give a rip if Capers shouts or not. His niche is preparation, right? That's what I always hear. And lately, his teams are showing up looking like they just got their playbooks about 5 minutes before the game. False starts on OPENING PLAYS? Please.

It's not time for Capers to get mad. It's time for him to do his friggin' job for the first time in 2 weeks.

The locker room comments make me wonder if they are over coaching. Sometimes you can simply make people think too much rather than simply reacting. In other words they may be over coaching the players.

All I said was that he was way outcoached the previous two weeks. I wasn't asking for his head. I just thought the level we were outcoached was alarming though.

Regardless of age and money when you have someone that you respect a great deal the way these players do Capers and each other and he's out of his normal calm, mouth hanging open self and lighting into someone or everyone for that matter I think it would make a difference. It's easy for someone to say "oh, my bad I should've had that one", but when you've got someone ripping into you from time to time on certain mistakes it kind of drives it home. That's my opinion though. There are some times to be calm and collect and other times when you get so ticked off you can't help yourself but to get caught up in the moment and light into these guys and that should've happened at some point and time two weeks straight.

Saw your two posts on this Porky. I don't think it was shown on tv, but they did mention it in the 610 gamecast (can't stand the tv announcers) that he was getting ripped into by Capers on the sideline right after that play.... just so ya know.

Some advice. Next time you are at a Texans game, train your binocs on Capers and watch him interact with the other coaches and players. Some of you might be surprised that he does more than write notes and stand there with his mouth open. Better yet, go ask Jonathan Wells and Jabar Gaffney whether they think Coach is too mild mannered.

Well, that's good to know. Maybe the reason the cameras do not catch this is because Capers is known for being mild mannered and does not get on camera all the time opposed to some of the other coaches who tend to get more vocal. Don't get my message wrong, I don't want our coach to make a arss of himself, just ignite a little fire in the players, and if your statement is true, then, he is doing exactly what i would like to see.

Just because we don't see Capers yelling at the players on tv doesn't mean that he isn't coaching the team. Capers is respectful and dignified, but that does't mean that he doesn't rip someone a 2nd one during the half or when we don't see him. I kinda respect the fact that he doesn't make it a whole production and make a spectacle of himself. These past 2 games weren't bad because of bad coaching. There was bad playing. Bad blocking and just right down more bad playing. We were outplayed, just like we outplayed Jags. Players don't need to be yelled at by coaches to play better. They know they need to play better...but it is the fans they have to answer to. The Texans know that this town is hungry for a winning football team, but it is not about to let them slip into a state of "Oiler-doom". This team is a good team. They just need to play with consistancy more often. Hope this home game and great fan participation knocks them back in the groove. We must win this sunday. Let's make this a game to go down in Texan history and let the fans be a huge part of that. Let's earn another "Game Ball".
