Default Cushing & Nix on PUP

Cushing & Nix on PUP Uh oh!!! Shouldn't Cushing be 100% by now? Hopefully CnD will be around to shed some light on this. It looks like his concerns might be well founded. Again. Dammit.

What's up with Nix? I have really high hopes for him.

Glad to see Clowney wasn't on the PUP.

Since it is the Active/PUP list the player can be activated at any time.

I'm guessing it's the pre-season PUP like Foster was on last year.

I'm just saying it's not the regular season PUP where we can't have them until week 8 or whatever it is, which now that I think about, might be good for Cush to have him playing past week 5 for a change.

I see where you're coming from, but Cush should be 100% by now. Hopefully it is purely precautionary and nothing to worry about.

No need to hit the panic button on Cushing. This was pretty expected. All reports have said that he is expected to be fully healthy for Week 1. This is just a precautionary step.

The Nix news is more concerning. He fell in the draft because of injury concerns and this may be an indicator that his knee is still an issue.

As has been said, this is the preseason (active) PUP, and anyone on this PUP list can be activated at any point prior to the establishment of the final 53 man roster.

On the flip-side, it should be noted that the only reason you want to place someone on this list is to reserve the right to place them on the in-season (Reserve) PUP where they do have to sit out a minimum of 6 weeks of the regular season. There's absolutely no other benefit to having them on this list.

Noone's really mentioned from what I've seen thus far that Tevardo Williams was also placed on the PUP.

Last year, he was placed on IR after he "tweaked" his ankle.....something that was later identified to be a high ankle sprain, a notoriously chronic, recurrent type of injury (ala Caldwell and Brisell). When I looked into it deeper, I found that he was actually in a boot in November of 2012 for a high ankle sprain. This is what limited him in his late and post season play (Senior Bowl) endeavors and limited his Combine to only straight ahead runs. In fact, I followed his high ankle history back to the 2012 preseason. If this wasn't bad enough, I found that his limitations at the Combine were not only due to his high ankle problems, but that he was also dealing with significant groin and back issues at the same time. Obviously the Texans were presented with an entire menu of red flags prior to the Draft.

It has long been obvious that the Texans don't consider a player's injury history for draft purposes. Other teams do. That's why Nix was available so late.

Hopefully that attitude has changed with the new regime. Hopefully Nix was a gamble on a player who was available far later than expected. Maybe the new Texans will be a real football franchise.

I have a feeling that O'Brien will be more responsible with draft picks than Kubiak was. I think the only reason we drafted Nix is because he was a 1st round talent at a huge position of need that is a tough position to draft for. I think it's worth the risk.

That along with Nix not registering any stats in more games than he registered at least 1 tackle. Plus watching his games, against the better competition, only the OC is assigned to Nix and he's rarely double teamed. In National Championship game he was owned by Barrett Jones and a reason why Manti Teo had such a terrible game. Eddie Lacy ran wild up the middle all night long and Offensive MVP.

IMO Nix was a desperation pick because they didn't have the players to fill out the position. Sadly I think trading a 4th and 5th to move up was waste. Good chance Nix would've been there 18 picks later due to his lack of production and his health issues.

The question is was it RAC or O'Brien who didn't want to take that chance? And why not?
Before anyone asks, I excluded Smith because I've already said *I* believe that Smith mainly makes whatever deals are required to make sure that the Texans get the guys the coaches (or McNair) have identified.

Speculation on my part, IMO I think it was a combo of both O'Brien and RAC and then Smith made it happen. *I* believe you're "Dead On' in your analysis of Rick Smith. I owe Rick a public apology for my many accusations of his draft failures. Now I see it as Rick just carrying out orders and making it happen. A reason why IMO I think he was not fired. I don't think Rick was directly responsible for poor draft picks. With that said, I still think there is cause for Rick's dismissal. The Pro and College personnel, scouting department and player evaluations have been disappointing at best. Time to seek a higher level of the Commitment to Excellence. No doubt Rick tries hard but the evaluations are lacking. As Lou Holtz once told me, the reason I am successful is because I know how to win more football games than the other guys. Texans don't have that "Know How".
