He has not made that clear. He's made it clear that he doesn't want to attend OTAs. According to the words that came out of his mouth, he's working out whether he wants to be here or not.

There's no magic needed for a man to make up his mind.

I see people retire all the time. It's not much different than what I'm seeing from Andre right now. Our company gives them an option to leave at 58 if they meet other criteria with no penalty. Some guys are ready to take it, some guys aren't. Some guys planned not to take it, but something happened that changed their mind, "You know what, I've had enough."

They can ask to be transferred to another department, & depending on what happened, some do. But for such a big change like this, that Andre is facing... many can't bring themselves to subject themselves to what I'm going to be going through for another year.

Sometimes that decision is made in a day, most of the time, over several months. This one guy in particular is 64, he's day to day. Everyday, he changes his mine at least three times. We know one day we're going to show up & he's going to say, "Suk it beyaotches!!!"

But he's still a good guy. Paid his dues. It's a headache for the bosses, I'm sure, but he's earned it.

Are the Texans truly at a point where they must decide between AJ and "the team"?

And as an aging, oft-injured and no longer fast WR, he just put together the second most productive two-year period of his career. He was also one of the reasons that this hot pile of horse poo team last season was able to be within one score at the end of several of the games.

While I expect and respect that fans are getting very emotional about AJ not being at OTA's and for the first time ever not towing the company line, I will continue to challenge the following:

That missing OTA's (a not uncommon practice with veterans) is tantamount to treason on his part and places the entire character and loyalty that he has displayed in his career into question.

That this treasonous act has in the mind of some fans taken him from being a #1 WR for the next few years that put up 109/1,400 last season to now being some over the hill hot garbage.

If a fan doesn't like AJ's actions, or doesn't now like AJ because of his actions, that is their prerogative. This MB is proof of the vast spectrum of opinions about what is going on in the heads of both AJ and the Texans.

But the hyperbole around the impact to the team and his current skill sets is getting ridiculous. IMHO, of course.

Worked with two guys who were crusty old geologists. They both had "suck it" parameters.

First guy said he held a bucket in each hand, one filled with money and the other filled with crap. When they both got full, he was out of there.

Second guy made a flow chart based on having two bad days in a row. If today was bad day #1, the flow chart said come to work tomorrow. If today was bad day #2, it said to retire.

Historical note - Emmitt Smith held out all the way through the first two games of the 1993 regular season...prior to the Cowboys riding him to a Super Bowl victory in which he was MVP.

Different scenario all together. Emmitt was in his prime, and had not got paid what he was worth. AJ is at the end of his career and has already been paid. He needs to man up and get on the field and help bring the young kids along, as well as learn the system. Or ... just come out and ask for a trade.

And they have different names too. Knew someone would attempt to distinguish on the unimportant parts. The point is the key cog for the team missed all the offseason and into the regular season and it didn't damage the team, he didn't come in out of football shape, he didn't lose his stature or leadership on the team, etc.

Smith's holdout was at the beginning of his career after 2 amazing yardage years in the prime of his career. I remember it well. Jones refused to recognize Smith as the top-level RB in the NFL and wanted to pay him less than half of what his contract eventually was signed for. The holdout was a matter of what everybody recognized as greed on the part of Jerry, not Smith.

EDIT: And there was no turnover of the coaching staff (J. Johnson) or change of scheme.

One other very major difference...........AJ is under contract.........Smith was not.......Smith's contract at the time had EXPIRED.

Quote:
Just when Cowboys fans were finally accepting Jerry Jones as the owner and were even considering forgiving him for the way he fired Tom Landry in 1989, he held stance on an amount to pay Emmitt Smith, the Cowboys' star running back.

Training camp came and no Emmit. Preseason was played and Dallas looked terrible without Emmitt. Jones said that the team would be fine. Johnson knew better and insisted that Jones sign Smith before their first game of the season against the hated Washington Redskins on Monday Night Football. Sure enough Dallas was whipped 35-16.

Smith even appeared on the halftime show of that game to discuss why he was not playing. The running back was only trying to be paid as the best running back in the game, not at some second tier player amount as Jerry Jones was offering. In addition, the media portrayed this as a contract dispute. How could this be a contract dispute? Smith's original contract had expired.

I haven't really taken a side in this Andre thing...Haven't given it much thought...

But from a fan of the Texans standpoint, Andre should be out there. He should be learning the new system, buying in...helping the younger guys...getting some rapport with the QB's...Putting in as much work as possible.

If these OTA's aren't important or if you can miss them and it not mean much, then why is every single other member of the team out there working and getting better? Bonding...learning...gaining familiarity...buying in...building...? Yeah, some players miss OTA's, but a vast majority don't. Some people get lucky and don't catch anything or get pregnant having unprotected sex. Doesn't make it the ideal thing to do.

This is a new staff and from a team perspective Andre needs to be out there. Is it a make or break that he isn't? I don't know, but I know that it would be a positive if he was out there buying in and working with the rest of his teammates.

Now...From Andre's perspective...I get it. I totally get it. I don't need to lay it out...Everyone gets it.

So while I'd like for him to be out there and I think he absolutely SHOULD be out there to help this team get better, I understand his perspective.

There is really no need to justify either side of this debate. It's just one of those life things that is what it is.

C'mon man, even you with that standard know it all lawyer mentality doesn't believe that age, and whether or not the player has already been set for life financially, doesn't play a key part in this comparison. It has to.

The "holdout" was at the end of his rookie deal... Meaning, this was his one, sure shot to set himself up for life... AJ is in the middle of his contract, earning over $10 million per year... and, has earned close to $100 million over the course of his career. It is a very different circumstance.

That being said, I'm not bothered by his holdout. Frankly, I think the Texans organization would be wise to move on from him given the limited hopes of this season, AJ's cost and age, etc...

True story: my dad wasn't ready to retire. We wanted him to, so he could relax, but, he was into his job, and liked it. He kept saying "I don't know. One of these days. Maybe."

Translation: he was never going to retire.

Well, one day, he arrived at work and decided he was done. Finished. Over. His boss kept asking him if he was sure, and he said yes.

We were all shocked at the randomness of it, but, hey, when you've worked at a place for 40 years and put in your time, you have a right to change your mind on a whim.

Okay, perhaps a better example would be Lance Briggs of the Bears pior to the 2011 season.

Briggs was 3 years through a 6 year contract (which he got after a year under the franchise tag, during which time he threatened a holdout, stated he'd played his last down for the Bears, and asked to be traded), and he formally asked for a trade (yes - for the 2nd time). Mind you, this was as a result of a pay dispute, but it was also a couple of days after he stated he wouldn't be a distraction, and said "I'm going to go out and play the game the way I've always played it and see what happens". The way it essentially played out was that the Bears did nothing with the trade request, they did nothing with his contract, and Briggs went out and had a Pro-Bowl season.

Athletes become unhappy all the time. They also get happy again pretty frequently. Does this mean AJ's deal will turn out with a happy ending for Texans fans? Who knows. But that's the point - who knows! My guess is Andre's a Texan in 2014, and while he may not be happy about it, his play will never show that because he is a true professional. But that's just my guess - it's probably a good idea to completely ignore it!
