On March 18, 2013, Fitzpatrick signed a two-year contract with the Tennessee Titans.[15]
Fitzpatrick replaced Jake Locker for the Titans in Week 4 due to an injury in the third quarter. Fitzpatrick completed 3 of his 8 passes for 108 yards, which included a 77 yard TD pass to Nate Washington, in a 38-13 win against the Jets.
Fitzpatrick played in 11 games and started 9 of them. He finished the season with a 3-6 record as the starting quarterback where he respectively beat division rivals, the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Houston Texans, in the final two games of the season.
Fitzpatrick was released on March 14, 2014 and replaced by Charlie Whitehurst.[16]

If Fitzpatrick is not asked to perform a miracle on every play like Schaub ended up having to do then maybe he can be successful with the Texans. We got to get that running game working again too and I think they will. Using more of a tight end type offense I think Fitzpatrick might be ok till Savage is ready to make that jump from backup to starter.

Case & Tj can be ok until Savage is ready to make that jump. Expecting Fitz to be better than ok when he's never been better than ok in 9 years... may be asking a lot.

Why would the Texans have spent 4.5 million dollars guaranteed on Fritz in the first place if he wasn't any better than Keenum and Yates?? I don't understand the logic. Why do you guys think they brought in Fritz? Doesn't make any sense if they don't plan to play him.

He provides a vet presence and leadership on field. I think Texans are hoping that "ok" is enough for this season while developing Keenum and Savage. Charlie Pallilo said today on his radio show that it is very possible Texans could go 5-0. Then he said 1-4 just as easily.

I think things change. One minute, they're thinking one thing. The next minute, they're thinking something else.

We were paying Sage Rosenfels $3M to be the back up to a guy we just gave $8M to prove he could play in this league after he proved 4 years running that he could not. Once we ran that $8M zero out of town, the Texans went & got a $7M/yr guy to start ahead of the $3M/yr dude.

$4.5M (8 years later) for a back up is not unheard of.

So for all I know, he was brought in to be the back up.

We were not going to give the job to Keenum, we were going to make sure he had someone to beat other than Tj & a 4th round rookie to get the starting job.

But the plan was probably always to carry two QBs. Keenum, Fitz, & a 6th round pick (to undrafted FA) on the practice squad. But OB fell in love with Savage & used a 4th on him instead, so now he's got to make the roster, leaving no room for Fitz.

If Keenum returns, then we've got basically the same offense we had last year plus Su'a-filo.... it's not a rebuild, as far as Andre is concerned. We make him happy, he comes back being the team guy he's always been.

But we're rebuilding the defense.

Very good insurance policy. BO'B doesn't have any loyalty to Yates or Keenum. Why not get a vet with extensive NFL experience when you aren't really sure about the two incumbents? Guaranteed money is the only thing that counts in the NFL, btw. $4,000,000.00 is that number.

The way his contract is structured, it's a 1-year deal. We'd take a hit if we cut him this year but if we cut him next year, we gain cap space.

He's coming in as a back-up and because of his high football intelligence, as another coach in the QB room. He's a guy that can help get Savage ready or even help TJ/Case, if they need it. He's a guy that's been around and seen several systems.

4 million out of 130-140 million is really not that much. IIRC, he counts about as much against the cap as Jake Locker does.

Fitzpatrick is smart, mentally tough, and a good athlete with an NFL arm and release. Looking over his career, I would argue that his poor TD/Int. ratio is likely due to being consistently on bad teams. I don't know that he has been on a well-coached team yet. If he can be coached out of a few habits, I am optimistic that he will have a career year this year and next (depending on the development of Savage). I would not be surprised to see him hit the following marks:

62-64% completion
4000+ yards
2 to 1 TD/Int ratio

and a top 10 QB in YPA.

We will see.

Why is it that the Titans released him after just one year of a two-yr contract?

Sure sounds like they thought of him as a one-yr rental?!?

How many QBs can you think of with such a long consistent history of poor TD to INT ratio that ever turned it around, no matter who the coach was?

Dan Fouts didn't raise his AYA to a good level until his sixth year; ditto for the TD/INT ratio.

Well, good. Then Fitzpatrick has less than a 100:1 chance of reaching that goal in his 10th season.
