Packers are desperate for pass rushers across from Matthews. Nick Perry hasn't really worked out and their depth isn't that great. I think Peppers is pretty much washed up at this point, but they're obviously hoping he has a little left. I wouldn't expect him to be a starter. More of a reserve pass rusher and sub package player.

RB Toby Gerhart got the best deal in FA of any player who did not start a game in 2013, signing a 3-year deal with Jax for $10.5 million.

NFL teams have cut 10 players who were 16-game starters in 2013. Nine are in their 30s. Redskins C Will Montgomery became the 10th Friday.

Of the 20 biggest contracts handed out thus far in free agency, only 5 went to incumbent Pro Bowlers: Talib, Byrd, Albert, Whitner, Verner.

Ben Tate - RB - Browns
Browns agreed to terms with RB Ben Tate, formerly of the Texans, on a two-year contract.
Tate was the best running back on the market, but the Browns were the only team to make a public run. Extremely injury prone through the first four years of his career, Tate's contract is expected to be incentive-based. Coming from the Texans' zone-blocking scheme, Tate is a fit for fellow ZBS OC Kyle Shanahan, but will have to prove he can stay on the field before anything else. Although Tate has impressive burst, his game lacks wiggle. He's a downhill runner who will need his blocking to click to have the breakout year many have long expected. Despite the question marks, Tate and his career 4.7 YPC have definite RB2 potential in 2014.

NFL free agency: Carolina Panthers may be making wrong calls
Quote:
The Panthers entered free agency needing a left tackle to replace the retired Jordan Gross and a receiver to step in for the cast-off Smith. To this point they've signed neither, while watching five starters (counting Smith) go elsewhere.

No. 2 wideout Brandon LaFell became the latest starter to bolt, agreeing to a three-year deal with New England on Saturday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The Patriots also made a play for Smith, so Bill Belichick must see something in the Panthers' receiving corps that Gettleman didn't.

Meanwhile, the smoldering remains of the Panthers' receiving depth chart now includes just one player who's caught a pass in an NFL game. That would be Kealoha Pilares, who has two career catches for 42 yards and missed all of last season following knee surgery.

Gettleman seems to be putting a lot of faith in Tavarres King and Marvin McNutt, who almost caught a pass against the Falcons in Week 17...

LaFell is going to be really useful in that NE offense. Wouldn't be surprised to see him with a 70-1000-6 season within the next two years.

Agree, will be interesting to see his upside.

Emmanuel Sanders deal draws executives crying foul
Quote:
Emmanuel Sanders is expected to sign with the Broncos on Sunday, but the process that led him there left the other teams involved fuming and crying foul. One team official claimed Sanders' agent broke "every rule in negotiations."

Agent Steve Weinberg, on behalf of the wide receiver, accepted a deal with the Chiefs in principle, according to one team source. Weinberg then engaged in negotiations with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, according to another source involved in the process.

While shopping the Chiefs' offer to the Bucs, Weinberg never explained that he had already accepted the terms of Kansas City's offer. Later in the night, Sanders' agent had agreed to terms with the Broncos, which is where he is currently headed. Sanders and Weinberg also rankled the 49ers by agreeing to visit, then blowing it off.

"This was one of the worst situations in modern football negotiations," one executive involved said. "Totally wrong. This needs to be stopped."

Reached at his home late Saturday, Weinberg declined to comment on the record when informed of the allegations.

The Dallas-based agent recently was reinstated by the NFL Players Association, which had barred and decertified him in 2003 because it had reportedly found he diverted assets to an offshore account during a dispute with a partner and collected a fee from a client prematurely...

Free Agency Salary Cap Updates and Team Notes -- Monday, March 17, 2014
Quote:
1. Oakland Raiders
Approximate Current Available Cap Space - $47.8 million (figure doesn’t include the signings of Justin Tuck, Lamar Woodley and Antonio Smith)

2. Cleveland Browns
Approximate Current Available Cap Space - $39.9 million (figure doesn’t include the signing of Ben Tate)

3. Cincinnati Bengals
Approximate Current Available Cap Space - $28.1 million

4. Jacksonville Jaguars
Approximate Current Available Cap Space - $25.3 million

5. New York Jets
Approximate Current Available Cap Space - $27.8 million

6. Miami Dolphins
Approximate Current Available Cap Space - $25.2 million (figure doesn’t include the signing of Cortland Finnegan)

7. Green Bay Packers
Approximate Current Available Cap Space - $24.2 million (figure doesn’t include the signing of Julius Peppers)

8. Philadelphia Eagles
Approximate Current Available Cap Space - $18.8 million (figure doesn’t include the extension of Darren Sproles)

9. Buffalo Bills
Approximate Current Available Cap Space - $18.3 million (figure doesn’t include the re-signing of Scott Chandler)

10. Minnesota Vikings
Approximate Current Available Cap Space - $16.3 million

11. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Approximate Current Available Cap Space - $15.3 million

12. Indianapolis Colts
Approximate Current Available Cap Space - $14.3 million

13. Seattle Seahawks
Approximate Current Available Cap Space - $13.4 million

14. St. Louis Rams
Approximate Current Available Cap Space - $13 million (figure doesn’t include the re-signing of Roger Saffold)

15. New York Giants
Approximate Current Available Cap Space - $12.6 million (figure doesn’t include the signings of Walter Thurmond and Jon Beason)

16. Houston Texans
Approximate Current Available Cap Space - $12.1 million

Rivaling the Bengals as the NFL’s least active free agent squad, the Texans’ $12 million in available cap space would increase to over $15 million with the release of Matt Schaub. Although they have the available cap space to make a play for a free agent, Houston seems content standing still. The Texans do have a fair amount of talent in place as well as the #1 overall selection in May’s draft. Their biggest offseason concern (aside from finding a franchise quarterback) is likely locking up J.J. Watt (a free agent after 2014) to a long-term deal.

17. Denver Broncos
Approximate Current Available Cap Space - $11.7 million (figure doesn’t include the signing of Emmanuel Sanders)

18. New England Patriots
Approximate Current Available Cap Space - $10.8 million (figure doesn’t include the signings of Julian Edelman, Brandon Browner and Brandon LaFell)

19. Atlanta Falcons
Approximate Current Available Cap Space - $10.6 million

20. Baltimore Ravens
Approximate Current Available Cap Space - $10 million (before the re-signing of Daryl Smith)

21. Washington Redskins
Approximate Current Available Cap Space - $9.5 million

22. Arizona Cardinals
Approximate Current Available Cap Space - $8.9 million

23. Tennessee Titans
Approximate Current Available Cap Space - $8.8 million (figure doesn’t include the signing of Michael Oher)

24. Carolina Panthers
Approximate Current Available Cap Space - $8.4 million (figure doesn’t include the signing of Roman Harper)

25. Dallas Cowboys
Approximate Current Available Cap Space - $7.7 million

If we’re all going to bash Jerry Jones for his perpetual cap mismanagement, then we’ve got to credit him when he does something right. While parting ways with DeMarcus Ware may have been a no-brainer due to the $7.4 million he saved Dallas against the 2014 cap, releasing a franchise cornerstone is never easy. Jones also designated Miles Austin as a June 1st cut. While this will give the Cowboys needed flexibility to sign their incoming rookies when June 1st comes around, the downside is that Austin will still count for $5.236 million against the salary cap in 2015.

Dallas’ current cap situation isn’t enough for them to bring in any difference-making free agents (though you never know with Jones). However, they may have put themselves in a position to extend either Dez Bryant or Tyron Smith before their values inevitably increase..

26. Kansas City Chiefs
Approximate Current Available Cap Space - $6.6 million

27. San Francisco 49ers
Approximate Current Available Cap Space - $4.4 million

28. Chicago Bears
Approximate Current Available Cap Space - $4.2 million

29. San Diego Chargers
Approximate Current Available Cap Space - $3.8 million

30. Pittsburgh Steelers
Approximate Current Available Cap Space - $2.9 million

31. Detroit Lions
Approximate Current Available Cap Space - $2.6 million

32. New Orleans Saints
Approximate Current Available Cap Space - $1.9 million

Another first-round QB in Weeden taken just 2 seasons ago in 2012, and now he's effectively a bust, relegated to a back-up or maybe at best a "project".
I tell you what, it's difficult figuring out which one of these QBs can make it in the NFL, which ones can't ?

Sometimes it is.

It never was with Weeden. Guy was obviously not a 1st round talent, or even a 2nd or 3rd round talent for that matter.
