Default Texian's POST COMBINE Mock

1-1. Blake Bortles - QB, UCF

- no surprise to anyone. All things being equal BB size is the difference maker. When Bortles' gets some LEFT BIG TOE coaching, Bortles' ball placement, accuracy and arm strength will improve dramatically. Bortles has the highest ceiling of all QBs in this draft and his ability to remain cool, calm and collected when his team needs him in the final minutes of a game is what separates Bortles from the rest of QBs in this draft class.

Why not Bridgewater? Bortles is bigger and has a better arm and runs better. Teddy's passes > 15 yds are suspect and his deep ball takes a higher trajectory with more air needed than most. The latest rumors of him playing at 188 lbs at the end of 2013 would explain a softer arm. I project Teddy to be a QB similar to Andy Dalton.

Why not Manziel? Simply put, LSU and MIZZOU exposed Manziel when he couldn't get outside of the tackle box. When he tried to escape out the backside he wasn't very effective. Recently Greg Cosell and Ron Jaworski after watching hours of tape of Manziel have said Manziel often and chronically missed and overlooked wide open receivers.

2-1. Austin Sefarian-Jenkins - TE, Washington

If ASJ had simply duplicated his 12' season (69 rec, 859 yds, 7 TDs) there would be no questions about him being a RD1 draft choice. His alarming drop in production (only 36 rec, 450 yds, 8 TDs) is directly related to the Huskies implementing their new no huddle spread offense. TEs not required or included. ASJ had better production as a true freshman than he did in 2013. A result of the new offense called for ASJ to become a better blocking TE and he spent the year doing just that.

Garrett Graham is a FA and Owen Daniels is in the final year of his $6.25 mil a year contract. Ryan Griffin is unproven but is a big body TE (6'6", 261) that seems to be a fit for O'Brien's offense. ASJ is 6'5" and 262 lbs.

3-1. Donte' Moncrief - WR, Ole Miss

AJ will be 33 this season, now is the perfect time to find AJ's eventual replacement. At 35 for the most part, AJ's career is over and after 2 years of learning behind AJ, Moncrief is ready to step in. Donte' Moncrief was one of the top performers at the Combine: 6'2"/221 lbs./4.40 40/1.50 10 yd split/13 reps/39.5" vert/11' BJ/4.30 shuttle/7.02 Cone. Moncrief's 1.50 10 yd split, 39.5" vertical and 11' broad jump tell you that Donte' has an amazingly quick first step with great explosion.

4-1. Billy Turner - OT, NDSU

I have watched 6 NDSU games this year. Originally to scout CB Marcus Williams and became enamored with Turner. Turner reminds me quite a bit of Ryan Clady. Turner is a plug and play and would be the team's best option at RT. Turner can also play LT and would be the team's best option to slide in to LT should the need occur. Turner's Combine: 6047/315/34" arms/10" hands/5.16 40/1.75 10 yd split/25 reps/28" vert/9'1" BJ/4.71 Cone/7.92 Shuttle.

At this point you're probably thinking this is an early Offense heavy draft. Yes it is. There are two reasons for that. 1. The players picked fit the BPA. 2. This would allow Blake Bortles -QB, DeAndre Hopkins - WR, Austin Sefarian-Jenkins - TE and Donte' Moncrief - WR the opportunity to practice, play and spend as much time together as possible, learning and executing the new Bill O'Brien offense. More Time = Better execution.

Also of note, I am one who DOES NOT think the current Texans Team is a Super Bowl contender. However with the right long term strategic planning they could be only 2-3 years from contending. I am in favor cutting Matt Schaub and trading Arian Foster and taking all their dead money in the 2014 season. In doing so this will remove their entire salary cap allocations ($26 million) from the 2015 books. With prudent and responsible salary cap management in 2014 this will allow the Texans to enter the 2015 season approximately $60 million under the cap. This will put the Texans in GREAT shape to talk resigning JJ Watt and fixing the Defense after loading up on offense in the 2014 Draft.

5-1. Caraun Reid - DT, Princeton
5-Comp. (Connor Barwin) Philip Gaines - CB, Rice
6-1. DeAndre Coleman - DT, California
7-1. Avery Williamson - ILB, Kentucky

Reid and Coleman give Romeo the big bodies he prefers on his DL and Defense.

I'll take it.

I think this draft should be extremely offense heavy. If QB is truly the most important position on the field & if this is truly a QB driven league, then it is imperative that we do everything possible to help our new QB be successful.

I would take the best OT in the draft with our first pick, mainly because I believe we can get the best QB in this class in the 2nd. You obviously think Bortles is the best QB in this class & though I don't think he's a #1 overall prospect, I understand he's your guy & you won't get him in the 2nd. Maybe not outside the top 5.

I hope you are right about Billy Turner. It's totally possible.

I like the players you have selected but don't like the draft if you get what I mean.

2 of the top 3 in offensive skill positions and then a small school guy is my issue.

LOVE Caraun Reid though.

I would like to see Houston trade down then if Bortles is their target, make him a Texan.

Not a fan of ASJ & prefer OT here or pass OLB, maybe even a NT if right one drops?

Yeah small school & workout warrior, think there will be a more NFL ready WR.

Turner & Reid both gone, players got buzz.

Like CB pick.

Last two picks PS.

Like your format & enjoy ready comments!

Like the offense centric draft. I would pick an OT before the 4th rd. Although I heard the former OL coach Wylie sing Turner's praises on Sirius. Love Moncreif pick though, he has so much untapped potential and would provide something this offense has been missing for yrs. The ability to take the top off of a defense.

Surprised you didn't put a RB in there somewhere.

Of course I disagree with Bortles at 1. I think he looks good getting off the bus,but his accuracy and inability to throw guys open is a concern of mine.

I agree with adding an ot before the 4th rd. if all things are equal, I used to think James from the vols would be there in the 4th,I'm not so sure now. I have to think long and hard to pass up richardson at 2.1. Evn though james is a more natural at rt and less not forget the gm who drafted williams and ques is still here. I really thought if ques wouldn't have gotten hurt,he would've been the rt. Taking that in consideration,I could still take richardson and play him at rt and play quess at lg next to brown. Jones can play both guard and center as a swing and maybe replace myers next yr. I won't do a mock till after free agency.

Something I strongly considered but when you look at the number of RBs in this draft and the value of 5th, 6th and 7th RD RBs vs the expected UDFA RBs, I didn't see much much difference, if any, in those RBs. Antonio Andrews, Damien Williams, David Fluellen, Ladarius Perkins and Zulon Tipton just to name a few.

Moncrief strikes me a strong resemblance to Dre. He has good route running skills too.

Donte Moncrief, who participated at the NFL Scouting combine, was among the 18 players who worked out, but three others looked like they were good enough to bring to camp as free agents.

Donte Moncrief, WR: Moncrief was weighed and measured (6-foot-2 3/8, 219 pounds) and did position drills only. Scouts said that he looked very, very impressive.

I like very single one of these players. All in all probably the best mock I've seen so far for the Texans.

I'm on board with Bortles on the condition that he gets to sit for a year.

ASJ isn't my favorite TE in this class but he'll do just fine at #33.

I have Moncrief rated as a 1st round talent so I'd love to have him.

Turner is a great RT option in the 4th.

I have Reid as a 4th rounder so I'd take him here no problem.

I like Gaines a ton. Good pick here.

I have Coleman ranked significantly higher, 3rd/4th round.

Williamson is solid depth that we really need.

As of right now I don't think there's a chance he's there in the third. He seems to be rising fast.

Caught my eye against Texas last year when he had 7 catches for 144 yards and a TD. I kept my eye on him and was rewarded when he did the following to close the regular season:

6 catches for 161 yards and 2 TDs in a six point loss at LSU.
7 catches for 173 yards and 3 TDs in a win against rival Mississippi St to help his team become bowl eligible.

I've been in love ever since. He is far and away the best player on the field whenever he steps on. If he had any type of consistent QB help then others would see what I do. As it is, hopefully he falls somewhere where we can reach him. Future All Pro, in my opinion. Reminds me of Andre.

I'm curious to why you didn't draft an OLB?

Texans 3rd RD pick is the 65th pick/player, stranger things have happened. If Moncrief is there, it's a no brainer for me. I can see where Donte' could be available at #65.

Because there is not an obvious hole unlike DT(Mitchell FA), DE (Ninja FA), ILB (Cushing and ???). Currently Reed and Mercilus are depth chart starters. That's why no OLB but I do like Ronald Powell. I'm not sure how RC will proceed, does he move Reed to ILB and draft Crichtonas an OLB (his Tamba Hali?)?

I clearly remember Moncrief from both of Texas A&M's games vs. Ole Miss. If he's there at 3-1 we'd best run to the podium
