NFL coaching staffs just don't seem to have the kind of buddy-buddy relationship with the local press like fans would like - and some of them (fans) expect, It used to be that a coach (head coach or some assistant) could say stuff "off the record" and trust the press corps not to blab it. I just don't think that exists any more in this day of twitter and the "I gotta be first to post this on the web or it's old news" mentality of the press and quasi-press. So coaches are a lot more closed-mouth about team "news" than maybe they were "back in the day". Being the senior-most NFL reporter in Houston, fans are disappointed in him for not having all the inside scoop. Frankly speaking, McClain seems to be guessing a lot of the time.

Also, McClain - actually few of the Houston sports press corps - seem to ask the kind of pointed questions they'd like to see asked during pressers.

Then there's his interest in "going Hollywood" seemingly at the expense of his NFL reporting. Most fans don't give a flip that he appears in movies. They (we) want news of the Texans.

That these shortcomings translate into the "hate" you perceive is more an outpouring of disappointment more than actual hate. ...at least I hope it is...

...anyway, that's my guess...

Why does "hate" have to come into the conversation? Last year, as was acknowledge by many posters here, it seemed that outside sources would break stories/information about the Texans that you would have expected to have come from our own reporters. I'll leave it at that.

Doug Colman rides fast track to NFL
Quote:
Colman, 40, recently was named assistant special-teams coach of the Houston Texans.

"We're excited," Colman said in a phone interview, alluding to himself; his wife, Colleen; and four children (with a fifth on the way in April). "The last couple of years, my family and I moved to a bunch of different places since we left Absegami, and let's hope we can stay here a while."

Colman, an Inquirer first-team all-South Jersey linebacker from Ocean City as a senior in 1990, enjoyed a successful college career at Nebraska and then played for the New York Giants, Tennessee Titans, and Cleveland Browns during five NFL seasons.

His final NFL season was 2000 with Cleveland, and after that, coaching was the farthest thing from his mind.

"When I left the NFL, you feel you need a break from it," Colman said. "I was kind of a little bit burned out and needed time off."

That didn't last long...

Coastal Carolina, Absegami and Amsterdam are real coaching hot beds. I bet he learned a lot from that girls basketball coach. Still, he cannot do much harm as assistant coach STs and he can be coached up.

Texans new S&C coach changed Jeremy Lin’s career
Quote:
But by the time he left Cambridge, Lin wasn’t that same skinny kid anymore. Four years later, he weighed 200 pounds and had a legitimate shot of making it in the NBA.

He can thank the Texans’ new strength and conditioning coach, Craig Fitzgerald, for that. And he does.

“He’s a great, great, great guy,” Lin said after a Rockets practice last week. “I can’t say more about him. He changed my career definitely. When I showed up, I was 170 and I was the weakest player to ever show up in the Harvard basketball program, just weight-wise. And when I left, I was one of the stronger guys there. He just taught me how to be more mentally tough. He pushed me. Man, he’s awesome.”

See, Fitzgerald, whom Bill O’Brien is bringing with him to the Houston Texans from Penn State, was the director of strength and conditioning at Harvard while Lin was in college and had a huge impact on the point guard’s career.
Quote:
“He just pushes you in ways you don’t think you can be pushed,” said former Penn State defensive lineman Daquan Jones, who is projected to be a high-round draft pick, at the Senior Bowl. “It’s a different type of workout. You test your body in every type of way, in every weather condition. It’s just something that gets you in shape and gets you ready for the football game.”

Jim Bernhardt will join Bill O’Brien as his Director of Football Research as part of a new staff of 16 assistant coaches announced Wednesday. O’Brien refers to Bernhardt, his former position coach at Brown University, as his "right-hand man". For the past two years with the Nittany Lions, Bernhardt served as the Director of Player Development.
“He’s a fantastic friend and a great mentor,” O’Brien said January 3 in an exclusive interview with Drew Dougherty. “He helped me get into coaching so I owe him a lot.”

This Bernhardt got this job because "“he helped me get into coaching so I owe him a lot.” ? Does this sound like Kubiak's rationale for hiring his friends from Denver ?

Kubiak wasn't the first coach to do it nor will he be the last. It was just that Kubiak's friends didn't cut it while they were here and he didn't fire them quickly enough. Let's just hope O'Brien's friends are better.

Correct. As I have said before, Pete Carroll fired his buddy as OC not to long after hiring him. I'm sure it was a tough decision to make, but, he made it. We see how that turned out.

Maybe Kubiak has evolved, but, when he was here, the guy was terrible at making hard decisions.
