Good lord, this reminds of those yearly "Lets get Chad Johnson" threads that were so hard to digest or understand.

Yeah, we're supposed to not be rebuilding, but we'll go get some guy who has been one of the worst passers in the last 10 years of the year, who can't stay healthy, has horrible pocket presence, and who also slaughtered a ton of dogs.

That last part makes him ineligible to be here. Bob wouldn't sign one of the biggest animal abusers in American history.

Leaving aside the dog murdering stuff, he's just not a good QB. He's had exactly ONE year in his career when he was a good QB.

It was a mixed bag.

Some of us were excited because there was a lot of buzz around the league about Schaub. He was considered the best QB in the league who wasn't starting. There were a lot of people in Atlanta who wanted him to start instead of Vick.

And then there were a bunch of people who were skeptical because the guy was a career backup and a 3rd round draft choice. And the question was whether he was worth 2 2nd round draft picks.

There was also a contingent that wanted Sage Rosenfels to get the job. And then a few who wanted us to draft a QB... not that there were any great QBs in that draft: Quinn or Kolb.

I don't think so Kiwi. You can check page 3 of the college forum and all of the mocks in Nov and before that.

Some liked Boyd, but others (including myself) have been saying since last year that it was the receivers that made him look good. He has fallen off the radar game by game.

Some like Hundley's potential (even early on), but he's going back to school, as he should.
Another underclassman, Mariotta, also showed promises; he will probably go back to school to hone his passing skills.

Manziel is an exciting college QB, but there has always been concern about whether his skill set will translate to the pro game. Despite having NFL caliber OTs, he get out of the pocket too often.

Murray always had that gunslinger mentality, and made stupid decisions too often, besides being short; he's a long shot.

McCarron never displayed a strong arm, even though it's not terrible.
Whether he can play well under pressure was always a question mark.

Nobody knew about Bortles until recently.

Derek Carr and David Fales played against poor competition; both have shown not to be able to play well under pressure.

Mettenberg was not high on many people's list.
His injury only helps cloud the picture further.

Bridgewater became the favorite of many (but not a vast majority) by default.
His name was never mentioned early on.

Basically, IMO, it's a deeper class than last year, but that doesn't say much.

What?

Posted 8/28/2013 NFL.com - Teddy Bridgewater tops top 16 QB's

3/3/2013 Bleacher report - TB #2 behind Manziel

8/11/2013 Pat Forde - Teddy is most pro-ready

7/17/2013 SB Nation - Bridgewater expected to be one of four (Manziel, Braxton, Murray) top contenders for O'Brien aware

Those are the top 4 google hits for "best college quarterback" from March 1st to September 30th, leaving out two other bleacher report articles (Bridge #8 because he was going to face a week schedule, and the other had him #3 behind Manzeil and Mariotta) and one that was "most intriguing".

The most curious thing to me is that we signed him to a starters contract that pretty much meant we were married to him for at least 4 years.

However, in hindsight, had we signed him to a one or two year deal, we'd have picked up for another 4... so we'd have been in the same place anyway.

Those two weren't mutually exclusive. I wanted to let Sage named starter, draft a QB, then let them compete for the job. I think Kubiak would have been ahead of the game had he done that & selected either Quinn or Kolb. Sure, they didn't do much in the league, but Kubiak made Schaub nigh elite. Kolb would have been a monster.

Sage was just a stop gap. A little breathing room, nothing more.

I would bet that the main reason nobody was talking about Bridgewater here was because we'd just locked up Matt Schaub for a few years and no one would have imagined he'd turn to utter garbage AND that we'd even be anywhere near the first pick of the draft. If you look at the Jags message board, they've been discussing Bridewater since last season. People were probably looking more at Boyd, McCarron, and Mettenburger because they'd be available to us more likely and could be groomed instead of us actually needing a starting QB.

An example is Jameis Winston.
Even though he's only a Freshman, many of us already spoke highly of him after about five-six games in to the season.

Another is Hundley; you can go back and check the Early mocks done in Sep, Oct, and Nov.

As far as Mariotta, there are people who thought he might leap frog Bridgewater if he comes out this year (both on this board, and outside of it.)

If Dalton is on the outer in Cincinatti.

Would you consider trying to trade for him?

How about 1:1 for their 1st and Dalton?

Although I'm a manziel guy, I'm starting to jump on the Bridgewater bandwagon. I think he has what it takes to be a BIG TIME nfl qb. He looks alot like Russell Wilson now. When wilson was a college player, he scrambled around more, but since then, he's been more of a pocket guy. TB seems like he's got what it takes to succeed mindwise.Great character. Great work ethic. Humble. Calm. Smart. Passio for the game. Overall good guy.
Then you add in what he's done on the field...sounds like a cant miss. He will eventually get bigger and fill in in a cpl years. Played against bad competition? Had bad talent around him... (I'm reaching here because I dont know much about his teammates) I'm sure he makes his team better.

Bridgewater or Manziel sound good to me. I dont care which one as long as we dont trade down to get mallet or bortles. TB or JM with the edge to ...tbd.

Haven't given much thought to trading for Mallet. If it happened I wouldn't be shocked or anything. I'd rather draft our own QB and mold him.

I believe all of this is completely irrelevant at the moment, but I know we have to have something to talk about.

Still, whoever Mr. O'Brian hitches his Yankee wagon to, he's going to live or die by that sword, sure hell he will. There have been very, very, very few coaches in the history of the game who have seen success without a top flight QB to part the Red Sea.

That's the Promised Land, baby. Fact.

From my understanding, Mick Vick went back to school another year b/c he didn't want the Texans, a expansion team to draft him.. he didn't want us then, and I don't want him now..

Vick was drafted in 2001. Unsubstantiated rumor was he left college early to avoid the Texans. Given his personality I would guess he was going to come out early anyway. Why wait for his millions when he was going #1 already?
