And oh, by the way, UH lost its coach (Sumlin) just a couple of weeks earlier. So they didn't have it so easy, either.

But if O'Brien has the personality of Belichick, it won't matter as long as he can coach. And in fairness, he came across well in the HBO Real Sports feature this year on him, his wife and their severely disabled son:

Don't believe that was O'Brien they interviewed...he wasn't the coach until the next year...IIRC, he was still with New England...I believe that was was Paterno's son they interviewed.

Definitely not O'Brien. When he took the job PSU was on probation and bowl ban.

It wasn't Jay Paterno, but you're right - it wasn't O'Brien.

It was Tom Bradley, who was the interim coach.

Thanks for pointing that out.

You can tell in the first minute of this clip that it wouldn't be O'Brien's style to act like that:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1BE3HcZ9PE

I think I like the guy.

Meanwhile, for some reason the Steelers flagship stations hired Bradley for their postgame coverage. He's a huge drag.

Wasn't that Tom Bradley, their interim HC?

O'Brien became their coach for the 2012 season and they haven't been bowl-eligible while he's coached them.

I don't know if this has been posted yet but it doesn't look good for O'brien fans

http://pennstate.247sports.com/Artic...staying-168244

Brooklyn (N.Y.) Abraham Lincoln five-star defensive tackle and Penn State commit Thomas Holley spoke with head coach Bill O'Brien a few minutes ago regarding the ESPN report that O'Brien was in the process of working on a deal to become the Houston Texans next head coach.

ďI just off the phone with him," Holley told 247Sports Luke Stampini. "He said he isnít going. Itís not true."

Holley, the No. 24 player in the country according to 247Sports, is in Florida this week competing in the Under Armour All-America Game.

Maybe he'll be our Drew Brees & maybe we'll make the right decision & keep him. But it's a longshot from here on out.
Agreed

Case was put in a bad situation and will probably have a long career as a backup QB.

O'Brien has to play it cool until the deal is done for many reasons. It's just business, all the way around.

he has to say that UNTIL an actual deal is signed and delivered. if something were to happen like he doesn't land any NFL job, he wouldn't look like the guy that was itching to leave...instead he'd be the guy that said all along he wasn't leaving.

if these college/HS kids nowadays STILL believe 100% what any coach says when it comes to job security, then that's on them for not smelling the roses.

I can't think of many examples of imminently departing coaches who have been honest about their intentions. Mack Brown is pretty much the gold standard of decency in the college coaching world, and even he had to lie to his prospective recruits recently.

It might also be significant whether we have the first pick to an incoming HC, particularly if he has a player in mind already which might go 1-1.

Of course it is not the only reason but it is a big reason. Bellichick has been so successful in New England that NFL owners are wlling to play that lottery even though 4 out of 4 previous hires from that tree have been unsuccessful. We are talking about one of the greatest coaches ever to coach in the NFL. That has to factor in heavily. Sooner or later one of the coaches from the Bellichick tree has to be the 2.0 version one would think.

(CAUTION)

Once I began researching O'Brien, I can't see where he has done a lot besides being an oc in New England to warrant such interest. Everything else has been at the college level and nothing there really stands out as special to me. Even Penn State hasn't been that great. I am not saying he will be like his predecessors from the Bellichick coaching tree but I think we all need to step back and take a deep breath. I hope McNair will go through the interview process with more candidates than Lovie and Wade before jumping to a conclusion this early that O'Brien is his man because I see nothing in his background that makes him that much of a "must have right now sign on the dotted line" coach.

I would like to see if the Texans could interview Ray Horton. Reports are he was angry when Arians got the job over him in Arizona so he wants to be a head coach badly. He is an outstanding defensive coordinator. I would also like to see them interview Dan Quinn, dc of the Seattle Seahawks. He is a good dc also. There is too much at stake here to jump into a quick emotional hire. This next coaching hire will impact the Texans for at least the next 5 years most likely because we all know of McNair's legendary patience. Lets hope he shows the same patience when it comes to hiring a new head coach.

I don't know who is the best coach for the Texans but I do know it would be wise to do more interviews than 3 before making a decision.

I'm watching Game Day Morning (NFLN) Rapaport just reported that O'Brien has told his staff to be ready to move to Houston. Ian said he wants back in the NFL, but turned down the Chargers & Tampa Bay last season. He also said Penn state is preparing to make a big push for Greg Schiano.

Lovie, O'Brien, & Wade have all been interviewed for the position. Wisenhunt comes in Monday, the Texans will make their decision by Tuesday.

I think for better or worse McNair is going to hire someone quickly. The last time this process played out it did so in slow motion with Dan Reeves holding his hand and carrying his diaper pack and juice boxes. This time McNair thinks he knows what he's doing. He just might. Nobody said it was impossible

He's probably already decided to hire Lovie Smith.
