Posting some of the highlights before the obligatory asshat post comes in from not having read the article.

Quote:
Most players, given a taste of the NFL, will drop everything for another chance.

But former No. 1 overall pick David Carr turned down a pair of chances to sign in recent weeks, after his 2-year-old daughter was diagnosed with diabetes, and he chose to stay home with his wife to help care for her.....

“We’ll see what happens later. But for the time being, there are things that are more important.”

One of their five sons has also been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, so they have experience dealing with the condition. But since his daughter Grace is 2, the management requires more constant attention, so Carr skipped a pair of chance to collect a big payday, and perhaps play, to be a dad........

“The thing with diabetes is it’s constant, like every hour it’s something. ‘What did she eat for lunch?’ She’s 2, she can’t tell us, so we have to figure it out. While I was trying to make that decision for those couple of days, she was always there, always in need, always running up and giving me a hug. She didn’t know anything else, she just knew her dad was here. That stuff makes the decision easier.”

And on a week where families will gather to give thanks, the Carrs will be together thanks to dad’s decision to put them first.
One thing about Carr and his family: he talks the talk and he walks the walk. Hoping for the best for him.

Good for him, but let's not pretend he turned down multi year mega offers. 6 weeks of emergency back up role isn't worth the peace of mind of being at home for that...especially when he already has millions in the account.

Too bad he didn't tell BoB he would rather stay home with the family before the Texans drafted him.

Genetics. Possibly a virus. Possibly exposure to certain foods.

But mostly genetics.

Remember, this is Type 1 Diabetes not Type 2 Diabetes (which is more of an obesity/lifestyle+genetics thing.)

He turned down a lot of film study and practice time as a Texan to stay with family too.

David Carr was always a classy guy that I admired and respected. He was great for the community and the city of Houston was lucky to have him for what he did off the field. It's just a shame his career turned out to be a bust, but at least he won a Super Bowl ring with the Giants as Eli Manning's backup.

I know I heard Chester Pitts say something to that effect, but there were others but I can't recall exactly who. I believe Carr is a decent man and family man, but it seems he didn't put in the extra work to try to become a better player. Of course it didn't help that the OL was terrible and the coaching staff was even worse than the current regime so it may not have made any diffrence and maybe he knew it wouldn't matter.

The Oline was not nearly as terrible as people make out. The change from the very mobile Carr to the sloth Schaub had the team go from 43 sacks to 22. Only RT changed going from Wiegert to Winston.

Carr just across the board was not real committed to football and was aloof from the team. He rarely organized extra work or meetings with the WRs. He didn't socialize with his OL. He didn't stay at the facility and study tape with the coaches, WRs and QBs.

This

But it's debateable that the current coaching staff is better than the old coaching staff. 3 DC's in 8 yrs and Coach Joe still has a job.

Good for David. Someone calculated his NFL earnings (without endorsements), and it was well over $60 million. He seems like a smart dude, so his family should be set for life.

As far as his time here, it was so long ago that I do not see the point of holding on to bitter feelings. He was never going to be elite due to his skills and work ethic, and whatever potential he had was probably beat out of him the first couple of seasons. It never helped that he did not have a QB coach when he entered the league.

The no. 8 just needs to be taboo with the Texans now. Cursed or whatever, just stay away from it. NFL Sack records and pick six records have tainted it.

Not really debatable. Capers developed neither a good O or D. The D at 15 for one season was the only unit he ever had in the top half of the league. Marciano was here the whole time and Capers hired an out of coaching bed and breakfast owner as OC.
