Default Jake Matthews

Just trying to cheer .yself up and look at our proslects for a good draft pick next year.

I have read a couple of reports about him been the reason for Menzils success.

Is this true and/or do any of you know about him and his skill sets?

Asking as I would like us to sort out the O line in the draft.

Personally I would love to get Matthews. I can't remember a Texans line that looked this bad.

I also think that Matthews and Evans are both top 10 picks in the draft. I think Mike Evans could be a special WR.

After today's game the probability of Jake Matthews becoming a Texan dropped substantially and the probability of drafting a QB rose enormously.

I'm digging in here in preparation of the next board war.

We can't put any QB back behind the current version of our offensive line and expect him to succeed. We need Matthews in the first.

After that, I'd like to get more help in the secondary....then maybe a QB. I'd rather get a game manager while we build the O-Line again.

2006 was supposed to be the 1983 QB draft class all over again and we all see how that turned out.

BPA. I'm of the opinion that none of the QBs will be the best player available when the Texans pick, and Matthews may be the best player available in the draft. But hey, I wanted Ferguson back in '06.

Matthews is not a can't miss OT prospect like Joe Thomas or Jake Long. He's more like Fisher or Joeckel last year. Those guys only went 1-2 because of how awful the draft was.

Matthews will go higher than he should because he's the highest rated OT. Still a very good player, but I wouldn't label him as a "franchise LT" like many on this board have.

I did see him get beat a few times against LSU (but I don't think many people want him to be a franchise LT... we need a RT)

Drafting a RT #1 instead of a potential franchise QB is pure idiocy.

*If you feel this way don't take my statement personally. I'm not calling anyone here an idiot. That's just how I feel about it. You don't pass up a QB at #1 for a RT.

I think Lewon might end up going before Mathews after the combine.

No. He's had a very up and down season. He probably won't even be 1st team all conference this year. He's probably going to slide toward the mid-teens, possibly even 20.

I think Kouandjio from Bama will get a combine boost. He's an athletic freak, but is a bit raw technically. Matthews is very proficient technically which is why I don't like him as much as others here do. I think he's pretty much as good as he's going to be. That's not to say he won't be good, but that's why I don't see him as a franchise LT like other guys do.

I would not be surprised if Kouandjio was the first OT taken in the draft.

100% agree here. Top pick on a LT ok that's fine, but spending a top pick on a RT? Please no. If we have to spend a potential top 5 pick on a RT to help solve our Oline problems while we already have two legitimate pro bowlers(Brown, Myers) we have to start looking at our scheme/coaches

Ill also add a OLB/DE above RT too

I don't agree at all because this situation is one where you're drafting a guy to play RT for you now, and most likely LT in the near future. At the same time I don't see a must-have QB prospect in this draft. I see some guys I think could be but nobody like Luck. Nobody.

I draft Matthews in the first and then try to get myself back up high enough to draft Mettenberger. Possibly that can be done at the top of the 2nd round. Gotta keep in mind we still need help at LB (but then we don't even know what D our new coaching staff will want to run so who knows)

Matthews and Mettenberger would be smart even if you start him at RT. Brown was selected in 2008. He's in his 6th year right now. Having Matthews on the other side of him would most likely solidify our OL for another 5 years.

Default Re: Jake Matthews

obviously great bloodlines, good size & athlete. safe pick, can't really go wrong, would be a foundation offensive linemen for next 10+ years. really too early to tell if he'll even be top 5 pick (waiting on underclassman to declare). Cyrus is intriguing for sure, could be killer RT has more fluidity & athleticism.

best case is still for Texans to trade down. never imagined this season to turn out the way it has. if a trade out is not possible gotta roll the dice with Bridgewater, then go heavy OT & OG.

If you're waiting for the next Luck or Peyton then grab some popcorn because those guys don't come along very often. We are in the unique position to grab a pretty good QB prospect. To pass on that to take a RT (a position that can be filled in later rounds) is asinine. What does it matter if he can play LT in 5 years if we don't have anyone under center who can throw the ball?

Default Re: Jake Matthews

Peyton Manning receives excellent protection from an OL that consists of:
* LT Chris Clark a five year vet who was undrafted.
* LG Zane Beadles four year vet drafted in the 2nd round 45th overall
* C Manny Ramirze 7 year vet drafted 4th round 117th overall
* RG Louis Vasquez 5th year vet drafted in 3rd round 78th overall
* RT Orlando Franklin 3rd year drafted by Broncos 2nd rd. 46th overall

of course Clady is out for season & he was a high first 12th overall draft pick.

Texans have:
*LT Duane Brown 6 year vet 1st rd. pick 26th overall
*LG Wade Smith 11 year vet 3rd rd.
*C Chris Myers 9 year vet 6th rd.
*RG Brandon Brooks, 2 year vet, 3rd rd. 76th overall
*RT Derek Newton 3 year vet, 7th rd 214th overall

Clearly LT is the premium position designated worthy of 1st rd. selections but still not a necessity to get results. RT is important, as high as 2nd rd, but can be addressed later as well. What really stands out to me are the ages of players & years in the league. It appears Texans stood pat a year or two long with offensive linemen who they liked. age has apparently caught up to them, as other teams enter prime Texans OL is well past theirs. I know they invested two high picks in tackle position last year both warranted, but injury prevented them from contributing.

I just can't see Texans with Duane Brown on the books spend the #1 overall pick on a OT. Schaub will be off the roster, along with millions which will help mold salary for a top pick to replace him. I've kinda come full circle back to Tajh Boyd, in a trade down & adding extra pick for OL. That is best strategy.

I'm feeling the same; either grabbing Clowney and pairing him with Watt or trading down from first overall and investing in a mid-first/high-second QB like Boyd, Mettenberger, or Manziel. Use the extra picks to grab a RT and invest in the defensive line, cornerback, and tight end.

Yes, drafting a QB this year with the 1st pick may not be a smart move. I don't see a "franchise" QB like Luck, Manning, Brees, etc in the whole bunch. Some, like Bridgewater, may turn out to be good later, but who knows. I'd much rather get that RT or OLB/DE in the 1st, then maybe look for QB 2nd. Now, as for Mettenberger, I'd pass. He's not mobile at all, just like Schaub! Don't want to go down that road again.

Let me say this, as an after thought, if Bridgewater grades out well and the Texans have that 1st pick again, like it looks they will, and the new staff think he is a "franchise" QB, then go for it. Right now I'm just waiting to see who the new coaching staff will be and what system they run. It's not what I wanted to see this off season , but it is what it is.
