Default 1st 2014 mock

I know my mock is going to be a little wacky and people won't agree with where I have some guys slotted or who I actually pick but really I'm just trying to feel the class out. Haven't even watched everyone. I want to move Cush outside too Also I'm trading down in the second to pick up extra picks.

1) jadaveon clowney, olb

At the top of the draft I like physical freaks with production and football skills. Clowney fits the bill. Plus we need an edge rush.

2) lamarcus Joyner, FS/DB

3) Kyle fuller, CB

3) yawin smallwood, ilb

4) Daniel McCullers, NT (6'6" 351 lbs)

4) de'anthony Thomas, RB/Kr

5) juwuan James, OT

6) Chris Borland, ilb

7) colt lyerla

I don't know most of the players but I like the positions.

Kicker in FA or UDFA?

Doubtful the Texans allow cocaine in their locker room, LOL.

Well, at this rate we might have a shot at actually drafting Clowney.

Not a fan of 5'7" FS and I am doubtful James will see anything past the 4th RD. IMHO Ha Ha Clinton-Dix will be the better FS.

Despite the negativity since the season started, Clowney is still the best guy in the draft from a pure talent perspective.

Joyner is a badass, but his size will really hurt his draft stock. You may be able to get away with playing him as a FS like Arizona does with Mathieu. He would be an upgrade over McCain in the slot either way.

Fuller and Smallwood are both awesome. Love the picks, but both will probably be gone in the 2nd round.

McCullers doesn't fit the scheme Wade plays. I know everyone on the board wants a guy like him, but I don't see the point in mocking it or getting your hopes up until Wade decides to change things.

Thomas will probably return for his senior year because he's been a disappointment this year. He has only hurt his stock this year by proving he's not durable.

James is a good sleeper pick at OT. He has had his struggles this year but he has talent.

Borland is a beast.

I want nothing to do with Lyerla. He's a trainwreck waiting to happen. That said, I will never knock a late round flyer on a guy with that kind of talent.

Good stuff. Agree with the direction you went with multiple picks at LB and in the secondary.

Just curious what makes you think Cushing, now with 2 surgically repaired knees in 2 years, has the explosion to play outside as well as play containment against larger tackles.

Just an FYI - CnD has indicated this injury is much less serious and he can be projected back to participation in the off season and back to playing like he was before the latest injury.

I'm out on the OLB switch.

Playing outside doesn't require the range of motion that playing inside does. It's why Mario was able to play olb for us and it's why you see DE's make the transition from college.

Joyner is a baller, but I do hate spending a high second for him.

Low second or third round seem more reasonable for me.

1. Clowney, I would immediately go to a 4-3
2.Joyner, small but a playmaker
3. Smallwood, if your moving Cushing to OLB in 4-3 then give me another hardnosed LB like Skov.
3. Fuller, Major upgrade over the McCain Harris crap they are currently running out there. Could be the replacement for JoJo in 2015.
4. McCullers, the anchor of the 4-3
4. Thomas- If you want James you need to take him here
5. James- Give me Micheal Dyer, if your going to go Jimmy Johnson and take Lyerla go full Jimmy and take the best RB in the draft. (Dyer)
6. Borland- love hardnosed ILB's, this guy could turn into a starter, at worst he will upgrade the putrid ST's.
7.Lyerla- on talent this guy is a 1-2nd rd pick. Now your building my kinda team. If he cant stay off of the blow cut him. If stays of off it you have a better version of OD.

I like this draft if Rick/Gary/Wade aren't back, The thought of Watt/McCullers/Mitchell/Clowney on the front 4 and Cushing/Skov/Mercilus or Reed at LB means this defense could be as good as Carolina's. Adding playmakers like Joyner and Fuller are major secondary upgrades. The team speed would be much improved. Speed has been sorely lacking on the Texans for yrs. Would you cut Manning or let him take Joyner under his wing?

I want no part of Clowney. He wanted to take off this whole season in order to protect his NFL future. That tells me that he's in it for the money only and would only be great in a contract year. I don't like McCullers height either at 3-4 NT, he's going to have trouble getting his pads low enough to gain leverage. I also doubt seriously JaWaun James lasts that long, most likely gone in the 3rd. Borland strikes me as an old school 4-3 MLB who handles stuffing the run, not a modern 3-4 ILB with lots of pass coverage responsibilities.

I am a little curious about this as well. When people were underwhelmed with stretches of Mario's play they would lambast the Texans for taking a guy reputed to take plays off or glide in easy games. Here's a guy gliding for a whole year. Take the risk fine but don't beotch about it later.

That's why I've been saying that Clowney is probably the definition of a boom/ bust type of players.
The scouts and the medical staff, and the network that the scouting department and coaches had built over the years will have to investigated him thoroughly.
Those are resources that fans like us don't have.

Good point about the 4-3. Watt as your strong end and Clowney as your weak end. Mitchell at 3' tech puts him in prime position to make plays. He's been miscast as our NT although I think he's performed admirably considering. McCullers would be the 1' tech. Mercilus would be a reserve DE, he's not a natural LB and only plays one in Wade's defense because he's essentially a stand-up DE.

At LB though, I would play Reed at SAM, Cushing at MIKE, and Smallwood at WILL. Smallwood would be an excellent WLB because of his ability to flow quickly and make tackles in space.

Even if he busts, I could still see Clowney being a serviceable player, just on his frame and build alone. I don't see him being like Maybin or Gholston

This is an interesting draft. I like it.

Clowney concerns me a little bit, but he is most definitely a freak. I can't really complain about the pick, it would help our defense a lot.

I love Joyner. He was a better safety than corner, honestly. He plays the nickel very well; he's shown a knack for blitzing from that spot this year. He reminds me of Tyrann Mathieu, as WolverineFan said. He just makes plays out of that nickel spot. He's also an exceptional return guy and a leader of a top defense. A lot of football IQ with this guy.

Fuller is a really good player. I would actually be surprised if he didn't move up the draft board as we get further into the process.

I'm not familiar with anyone else except Smallwood (slightly) and D'Thomas. I like addressing the ILB position with Smallwood, but can't exactly comment on the player. Thomas is a cool late round guy. Him and Joyner would give us some speed in the return game, which I like a lot.

I'm not sold on clowney either. But when I exclude qb's for the time being and I think about what we currently have on the roster, clowney makes a lot of sense to me. And for the record, I liked Mario and when a lot of people were itching to get brooks reed in over him I lol'd at that. Find some of those old threads. I talked about how Reed wasn't beating anyone on his pass rush and how when the OL got their hands in him he was done. I remember people talking about wades 34 having more flexibility with Reed and Barwin at olb. Now some of those sand people probably want to move him inside.

Would be nice to have a legit presence on the outside again. Watt AND Mario would have been nice. Clowney, IMO, is a bit more fluid than Mario and would obviously be much cheaper at first.

I thought about Matthews, and I like Matthews a lot for this team (need to watch more film on him....and everyone else)...but the reason I didn't go there is because I think RT is solvable without using a top 5 pick on one. We spent a two picks on guys that can play rt last draft and I think Ryan Harris could be ok. Maybe even draft another guy or bring in a FA.

But I wouldn't be upset with Matthews.

I think Clowney would do well on the right team but that is not Texans. If our chinese fire drill continues, I could see him taking off a season or two. He needs to be in a dynamic situation where he would feel he is accomplishing for himself and the team is making obvious strides towards S.B. IMO, we cannot risk picks this year and would be a reason, I rule out Manziel.

So you are making picks with the mindset that this team is more than a year away from competing for a Super Bowl?
