Default What happened to us?

This time last year we were 6-1. Can someone please tell me what changed? The roster isn't that different, the staff has the same people.

Did we just have a softer schedule last year? Or a really tough one now?

There's usually a fine line between winners and losers. Last year, we weren't as good as our record indicated and this year, we're not as bad as our record indicates.

Even though we're only a few plays from being 0-7 this year, we're also only a few plays from being 4-3.

Last year, we were getting a lot of breaks to go our way. This year, not so much.

Personally, I think the biggest factor is whatever's going on between Schaub's ears. Last year, coming off a potentially career ending foot injury, he looked like he had made some improvements. But after the two big OT games last year, he seemed to go on a steady decline. I was hoping it was just a funk he'd be able to play his way out of but now, I don't think he can.

As a team, though, this team is not far off from being the same great team it was the previous two years.

We're 2nd in turnovers with 16,

We're 28th in takeaways with 5,

Which leaves us 30th in turnover differential at -11.

Since 2006, no team with a negative turnover differential has finished with a winning record. (I read something to that effect recently but forget where, so I don't have a link.) Turnovers usually make the difference in the post-season, as well.

Well that's a bogus stat. The Broncos, Colts, and Vikings all had a negative turnover differential last year and finished with winning records.

Yes, last years schedule fooled a lot of people.

Texans got fat and lucky off some fortunate situations last year. Schaub has shown that he's not good enough and was not good enough before the injury.

Kubiak like to stick to status quo. He's not a forward thinker. The organization as whole is slow to make good decisions.

I could never get excited for this season because I figured it was only a matter of time before the house of cards came crashing down.

Your faith in Kubiak being able to make this team a true winner is what happened. This team will not ever win a SB under Kubiak, and maybe not ever under Bob Mcnair if he doesn't start holding his staff accountable. His coddling of Gary Kubiak is probably the single and most important problem this franchise still has today.

Default Re: What happened to us?

Here's my short list.
We went into the season with

1.) A QB who has zero mobility and zero pocket presence.
2.) an offensive system that doesn't allow the QB to read defenses presnap and adjust the plays accordingly.
3.) an offensive system that handcuffs the QB with hot reads that are predictable. Making it easy for defenses to manipulate our offense into doing the predictable.
4.) a coach who refuses to make changes despite repeated failure over and over again.
5.) a coach who doesn't have the ability to make in game adjustments.
6.) a coach who doesn't have a clue how or when to incorporate things like the no huddle or hard count or moving the pocket around to slow down pass rushes.
7.) no real depth on the right side of the OL. OT Newton has been playing with injury since the middle of last season. Harris sucks and our rookie was injured early. OG Brooks is horrible at pass blocking. Jones is really a C who doesn't have the strength to play OG and our rookie Quisinbarry got hurt.

Those are just the offensive problems off the top of my head. There is even a bigger list on Defense.

Yeah, I'm not remembering the stat correctly... this is all I can find right now:
Quote:
Thanks to Jason Vida of ESPN Stats and Info who looked into the numbers for me. Over the past 11 years only 27 of the 132 teams that made the playoffs have had negative turnover margins.

In only three of those seasons, teams have made the playoffs with negative double-digit turnover margins. In 2004 the St. Louis Rams made the playoffs with a negative-24 turnover margin.

All of the Super Bowl winners in that span have had positive turnover margins, several with positive double-digit margins.

1. Matt Schaub. The truth eventually came out. That's what happens in sports. You cant hide forever. That's what was happening. His limitations and liability were being masked by six pro bowlers on offense and a weak division during a semi changing of the guard within the division due to Peyton's injury and the colts quickly rebuilding. Having perpetually weak jacksonville and tennesse on your division made the move from mediocrity to 2x division champs gave everyone a sense of fools gold. That was proven with how we got thumped by true elite teams in the playoffs. Schaub has always been schaubed. Throws idiotic passes at crucial times, never consistently shows up in big games, still immobile, average arm, and has always been inaccurate.

Schaub now being the record holder for pick sixes hopefully ended the talk of schaub being accurate. A lot of posters on this site fiercely defended schaub's accruacy. Dalemurphy and thunderkyss among them.

How does it feel to be so wrong?

People like to flaunt his stats and low INT numbers but he has low INT numbers because we always run the ball and its a conservative passing approach. Schaub has always had accuracy problems, you can tell by his horrible ball placement. Always throwing behind, at their feet, instead of hitting receivers in stride. Look at our lack of YAC. What is happening now is Schaub ran out of luck. Colts have now rebuilt. And any slight downgrade from the rest of the offense meant that Schaub would have to carry the burden which his physicality, athleticism, and mental strength is a tough proposition. He's not even carrying his weight anymore.

It took Schaub getting thoroughly exposed and setting dubious records for most texan fans to finally get the picture with schaub. He was never really good and he was never really the answer. He was always a glorified back quarterback just like his head coach.

2. Gary Kubiak. Ditto. Not having a true audible system, not having a true no huddle system is a disgrace and epic failure for a nfl coach in 2013. His offense is outdated despite getting stats and he has never felt the need to make subtle adjustments in order to upgrade his system/philosophy. Its arrogance + ignorance + stupidity = a very bad coach that needs to be fired. His cronyism is still in place which is another huge problem for the texans. First it was schaub, who he lives vicariously through, then it was frank bush, his own handpicked defensive coordinator with no experience and now with rick dennison, his linebacker buddy from denver who is now offensive coordinator. No wonder we have trouble scoring, our offensive coordinator is a linebacker. But that's ok, his buddy the guru is there to help him.

3. Joe Marciano. An original texan. An original failure. Hasnt been the same since the nfl changed the blocking rules on special teams.

HE. SHOULD. NOT. HAVE. A. JOB. PERIOD.

His personal and business relationship with owner bob mcnair has allowed him to keep his job. Fields poor special teams unit every year. Texans solution was to hire a special teams coach who was fired for sucking as special teams coach and going on multiple jobs in multiple years.

4. Wade Philips. His track record of completely falling off after turning around a defense is right on track. Another my system or the highway coaching approach. Very vanilla on defense in terms of scheming.

5. The Owner. Bob Mcnair. Good old boy network and houston cronyism run rampant with zero accountability. As long as there are butts in seats and we have a winning record everything is fine and dandy.

Total Institutional failure and lack of accountability is squarely on his shoulder. You have to hold people who are not doing their jobs accountable. You cant keep giving contract extensions to coaches doing bad jobs. You cant keep giving players new contracts after they got injured.

What the hell is wrong with you?

This season has been a culmination of all the bad business practices that these five guys have employed. Its like they keep on punching holes in the boat and now the water has finally sunk the ship. In past years, we just plugged the holes and our talent and division took care of the rest. They kept on stacking the deck against themselves and this year it finally caved in. The ship never worked and when we went up against other elite ships in the playoffs we were shown time and again how its done. Instead of learning from our mistake, we arrogantly thought there was nothing wrong with our ship and went back to the status quo.

This is whats happening to us:
1. Offensive Turnovers
2. Lack of turnovers caused by the defense.
3. Offense imploding in late game situation
4. Bad oline play which looks worse with an immobile QB
5. Bad dline play...we can't stop the run and we get no consistent pass rush which is why #2 is what it is.
6. Suck ass special teams
