I cant believe that the Texans Dr's screwed up the eval of Williams at the combine. (Yes I can) Williams needing microfracture surgery before he plays a down for the Texans is appartently status quo for the Texans medical staff.

James wont be there in the 5th. Probably not even the late 4th. Luckily the Texans will be picking early in the 4th. (Is that really lucky?)
Just to clarify to you Brennan Williams knee injury happened in 2nd week of rookie mini-cap well after combine. He injured his shoulder in 2012 (college) and then re-injured against Duke late October. He was ruled healthy by Texans from that injury in off season then knee injury after that. He will have at least 15 months to heal from the knee micro surgery.

What do you think about the future of our CBs???
Very interesting question and one I had figured out before 1) MS lost confidence 2) We did not resolve ILB Mays not the answer so far 2) Reed is better cheerleader than player. Here is what I think as of now; KJ is under contract 2014 @ $3m so no issue. Joseph cap same in 2014 @ $11.25 m and if healthy I'm ok with it. We have nothing in back up. Zero. Nada. McCain can't play nickle let alone replace either of these guys. I am about to give up on Harris whom I championed and mocked.

As much as I hate it, if Joseph heals up I'd probably bonus him out to reduce his cap hit spreading bonus over 2 more years. He is 29 now. More importantly, there is no CB that could start 2014 in draft. Closest is Roby Ohio ST. who was ejected for targeting Saturday and maybe Justin Gilbert in 2nd round. I was interested in Exum prior to his injury. So...I go with Dixon who can play FS & nickle. Then Jackson who could be an option for 2015 to replace Joseph or KJ (if he doesn't sign team friendly deal).

Also FYI, if Joseph is cut or traded, his pro rated bonus from '14 & '15 $3.5 x2 is $11.25 - 7 = $4.25 savings. Guarantee has been paid. Free agency an option or trade?

In the sixth round none the less... Wish we had kept him as well.

I think they were trying to put him on the practice squad, but he got snatched up.

Yeah I seem to recall that's how it happened. And then the weird thing when he was cut we couldn't resign him even though we tried.

Louis Nix not playing against Air Force due to knee tendonitis and he allegedly hurt his shoulder against Southern California. http://blogs.etruth.com/notre-dame-c...t-for-weekend/

I hate this line of thought. First off Mitchell SUCKS. How long are we going to continue to trot out subpar DT's next to Watt? I called it before the season started. I said if we don't get a real DT that can demand double teams this defense is going to struggle and Cushing (MLB) will not make it through the season.

This system is poorly designed. Wade needs to using a hog in the middle that can push the pocket backwards. Until then teams will abuse the middle of our defense and our LBs will continue to wear out and go down during the season. And our OLBs will continue to to be useless.

Agreed, during the off season I had to admit Mitchell looked better than I thought but he seemingly has declined. Wonder if Watt is thinking about who is on defense helping him to get better? Could we buy more than 2.3 tackles per game for Ninja's $5.647 m? Is Mitchell a hurry the QB Nose? 1 sack for 7 games? Well at least he is a clog the middle guy; no wait 20 combined tackles.. wrong again.

We might be focusing on the big dollars needed to re-sign JJ when we should think about who we place around him to make rings more available. To me a good nose and an ILB would be a huge start.

Absolutely. I have to admit though that he does hustle after running backs down field. Of course that's not what you want from your starting DT.

We went through basically the same thing for the last ten years with Andre Johnson. I guess we haven't learned from that mistake. We need someone next to Watt who is good enough to stop teams from double and triple teaming him. Poor Watt is going to end up just like Andre. A great player that just never really reaches his potential because of lack of support around him.

Mitchell has done everything asked but still seems a tweener & not the prototypical 3-4 nose guard. He consistently gets moved off line of scrimmage unable to collapse pocket though he can penetrate. Agreed, long overdue to address position with a higher selection.

If Carrether can be an upgrade at round 4, man that would open up my mock.

If he is worth a crap he'll never make it to the third round.

That is my concern and why I keep Nix in the mix. Info on Carrethers is difficult to come by and I think many are unaware of his improvement. Of course by draft day it should be different. He might not get combine invite.

BTW, Brandon Williams must be doing well. The Ravens cut Marcus Spears today.

I was always one of those guys who thought mitchel was to small to hold the nose. He hasn't been abysmal and I like his quicks off the ball (at least what we saw early on in his career. ) The nose has neutered his speed and leverage advantage to some degree I think. If we're gonna go in a different direction at nose next year let's try him out at de where ninja is. Chances are we can't afford antonio anyway so why not? Earl's been miscast from the get go...

Mitchell & McClain (RFA) are in last year of contract. I'm ok with Earl sliding to DE but if Crick can do it he is under contract for avg $700k thru 2015. I have Kony Ealy Missouri at one of our 5ths.

New info on Nix:

Nix remained questionable for Saturday's home game against Navy as he recovers from knee tendinitis that idled him last weekend at Air Force. He worked out Monday and is "progressing," coach Brian Kelly said, but practice will tell the tale.

"We're not prepared to play anybody that can't get in there and practice and do the things necessary to prepare for the triple option," Kelly said Tuesday.

Mitchell would definitely be better out where Ninja is. Mitchell is essentially a 3' technique talent that's being miscast as a NT and Smith basically played a 3' tech until this year. The problem is both are UFA's and we aren't likely to re-sign both of them. If we can bring one back for that position and bring in a NT then we should be okay.

I've never agreed with the "get a fat guy in there" logic though. It does a disservice to Wade's scheme. Jay Ratliff was a borderline dominant NT for Wade in Dallas and he barely weighed 300 lbs.

You need a guy who is strong enough to hold down doubles, athletic enough to one-gap, and just plain good enough to do both of those while collapsing the pocket. Louis Nix is all of those.
