Default BADBOY'S Bye week mock

I've been pushing Keenum for two years and looks like he can be the answer.

Round 1 # 10 NT Luis Nix Notre Dame 6'3" 326 Clogs middle usually double teamed & can collapse pocket. Any sacks are just extra. I see him developing under Phillips as a 3 down player ala Woolfork. Opens up alleys for OLBs and Watt.

Round 2 # 42 ILB University of Connecticutt Yawin Smallwood 6' 2 240 team suffered HC firing but he keeps trucking. 77 tackles 1 sack. 2012 next to Texans Trevardo WIlliams, YS had 120 tackles with 15 behind LOS. Kiper had him ranked 3rd ILB will be 22 YOA at draft. Huge motor that will get better. Good in coverage. I think Christian Jones will be gone.

Round 3 # 74 QB U of Alabama A J McCarron 6' 3" 214 a steal in top of third & most NFL ready QB that makes all the throws. 1600 yds @ 8.72. 14 TDs to 3 INTs. Mr. Consistent for 3 years that has annihilated every team and held off Johnny Football this season. Solidifies QB position & will benefit Texans negotiating new contract for Keenum in 2015.

Round 4 # 106 Safety Baylor Ahmad Dixon 6' 205 4.39 (baylorbears.com) 22 YOA can play nickle corner. 2012: playing as hybrid linebacker 102 T 2 INTs, 2 hurries and 3 breakups, 1 sack. I cannot find out why rated so low. His assault charge for popping a guy he thought broke into Dixon's apartment does not concern me. Replaces McClain and eventually Manning.

Round 5 # 139 RT Tenn Ja'Wuan James 6' 6" 318 resolves position as plug and play. May not fall this far but I think team woes hurts him.

Round 6 # 171 CB N.D. Bennett Jackson 6' 195 4.5 former WR 2012: 65T with 45 solo (guy likes to hit) 4 INTs puts pressure on KJ to re-sign for 2015.

Round 7 # 203 DE UCLA Cassius Marsh 6'4 260 (frame can hold another 15) 2012 50 T 10.5 for loss, 8 sacks 2 block punts. Someone may risk a higher pick.

I know we will need RB to back up Foster but think UDFA or vet will be signed.

JMO:

1. Nix, if we didn't have so many team needs/holes to fill I'd love this pick but Mitchell is serviceable-good at NT in our 1 gap system that stresses penetration and pressuring the QB, and I can't see using our 1st round pick on replacing a serviceable player.
2. Smallwood, I'm not familiar with the player but I like the size and productivity listed and fills a definite need. Why not take an OLB and fill both ILB and OLB positions with one pick by moving Reed inside?
3. McCarron, I like the player but he doesn't wow me, his girlfried does though. I see him as a game manager type of serviceable QB that would compete with Keenum. U of Alabama, not Texas. This pick shows alot of optomistic faith in Keenum. In the 3rd I like this pick.
4. Dixon, I'm not very familiar with the player but I love the position addressed and round. Fills a definite need.
5. James, if available it's a very good pick but I think he goes earlier. You might be right about team woes hurting his draft stock.
6. Jackson, I'm not familiar with the player but the position is a definite need but one I'd like to see addressed earlier.
7. Marsh, are you looking at him as an OLB prospect or DE? I wonder if adding weight would slow him down. Maybe he could lose 10 lbs. gain speed, and be depth at OLB?

I agree completely about RB's as UDFA.

I was thinking your next mock might involve a trade down scenario.

Default Re: BADBOY'S Bye week mock

1). Wilfork was a better prospect than Nix & he lasted until 21st & he was my last week mock draft pick for Texans in 2004 selecting ironically 10th. Some how I see similar results & he winds up a Patriot. Athletic bigs just don't grow on trees, your boy Poe is now a force in KC, he was very raw & took a year to develop but now supports his #11 selection overall & we thought Texans might take him late first, now he has to be in Texan wheelhouse as the best prospect for his position available to fortify middle of Wade Phillips defense.

2). Smalltown has NFL body you look for as inside LB in NFL. His stock will soar by/during combine & will be the top rated player for his position so your mock projects Texans adding two of the best prospects in this draft respective positions that are a concern for Texans. Would be nothing short of a miracle if he lasts to Texans second round selection.

3). McCarron represents a full change of the QB position for Texans both Schaub & Yates gone, who would have thunk it? I like the prospect but don't wish for a QB controversy & McCarron comes with a big name & hot girlfriend, just saying. He also reminds me too much of a smaller version of Matt Schaub. I would like to see a more mobile, gifted athlete to develop behind Case. I've watched Washington a couple times & really impressed with Keith Price. Reminds me of Russel Wilson or maybe its just the Seattle air, but has a strong arm, can move in the pocket of take off with good leadership ability.

4). Do you really feel Dixon lasts until 4th rd? He has good size/range would love this pick, not the best but probably in top 5 available for position in this class, depending on underclassman, so once again you have pillaged the competition in your optimistic defensive mock draft.

5). Ja'Wuan James has all the measureables of one Brennan Williams without the injury bug so how could he last past the 3rd round? Tackle is a position that is in high demand, so many teams need help in this area. Newton starts out strong but then just seems to wear down. Duane Brown had similar issues as a rookie so maybe it's a combination of less polish from beginning as well as injurys that has slowed his development & conditioning but certainly I would be on the lookout to add another OT but just need to get one of these bad boys earlier, unless your happy with a less athletically gifted, lunch pale blue collar prospect like my current selection Austin Wentworth who should still be here this late.

6). Bennett is ranked about 8th best CB with his size, speed & skill set, once again a very good talent but much higher graded than position slotted. Very defensive heavy mock draft would add a lot of depth but no LB's yet. Let me guess last pick of the 7th round will be an ILB?

7). I have Marsh listed @ 6'3" 268. Another defensive end, decent speed, kinda like Sam caught in between positions. This is one pick who will probably still be available here but do you think Texans will take another tweener? I'm just not sure where he fits, probably more a 4-3 strong side DE.

Very defensive heavy, but no ILB addressed. Added backup QB & addressed OT to late for prospect selected so I would focus more on grades, seems we have plenty of needs which may support trading down as mentioned with a team who covets Nix, New England just might do it since Brady window is closing

I hope not. I'd hate to lose to Texas 49-42 :P

That being said, I like Nix in the 1st for us. It would shore up the D-line for a while. I'm high on Smallwood in the second as well. Nothing wrong with bringing in a talented QB in the 3rd, so the McCarron pick is good too.
Round 4 I have us going safety as well. The assault thing might keep the FO away but good pick and good round to pick it in.
Don't know much about Ja'Wuan James but I would address O-line earlier, personally. If Jake Matthews falls to us in the 1st, or Taylor Lewan, I'd take them in a heartbeat.
Round 6 is also great, someone who can push Brice McCain and KJax.
Round 7 if we get Cassius Marsh in the 7th it would be an absolute steal. Love that pick.

I am entitled to one free misprint per post! lol. I corrected. On NT, Mitchell has been better than I expected but still not the force we need to push the QB to our OLBs. He could be a very good back up to Nix for a few plays. My main purpose is utilyze our OLBs more. You do know Mitchell & McClain are FAs (latter is RFA)?

2. Not a big fan of moving Reed & think we have plenty of OLBs. ALso can see the removal of Montgomery as a fire under remaining players.

3. McCarron plays not GF (lol) and QBs are supposed to manage games; how did that ever become a negative. Not sure I want a mecurial QB that looks like an EKG read. CHeck out AJ's stats last three years + he could lead Bama to third straight national title. Keenum fit the "system" QB and fans are now going crazy about him. I think my optimistic faith in Keenum for two seasons has been rewarded. I still want a plan B with AJ. A QB of his calibre in third is incredible.

6. No one is beating out Joseph or KJ. I expect Joseph to lower his cap hit with a deal like AJ did to sign Cushing. Jackson is nota free agent this year. So why use a higher pick when a 6th will bring you quality to train up and who could replace McCain at nickle sooner rather than later?

7. Marsh is pure DE imo who looked good Saturday.

Thanks for input!

As always appreciate feedback from a fellow Amigo! I think Wilfork set the world on fire and since him teams are more willing to draft a NT high. We did project that with Poe and hit on his ability. You know I have followed Nix for a while and see him as a plug and play at our Nose. Please see additional comments I made to Wolfe above. I almost went with OT Kouandjio and still might as remainder of season will offer info on our RT.

2. I think Christian Jones and AJ Johnson will go before Smallwood and good chance Skov may also to a 4-3 team. Two things to note: CJ Mosely plays Will in Bama's 3-4 and would be rated higher than Smallwood. 2nd as of 10/23/13 neither Brugler or Rang have an ILB going in first round. I don't doubt he will soar but hope we can get him at our high 2nd. If not prob will go back to my guy Andrew Jackson as I don't see any ILB that can cover. TBH I was not impressed with AJ Johnson.

3. I see AJ as a taller Keenum.

4&5 will probably have to select James in 4th which would be ok as I am okay with Manning and Swearinger.

Defensive mock with exception of OT and Qb which are our main needs on offense. I was tempted to go with Kouandjio and also WR Watkins as our firsts. K fills a need but hard to see Texans reaching that high for a tackle. Sammy Watkins would be pure greed on my part.

6. Not sure about your comment of no ILB with Smallwood at round two?

Love the nix pick. Mitchell has been invisible and he doesn't do anything particularly well. He doesn't put any stress on the interior of the oline. He's average to below average at this point.

I wouldn't even re sign Mitchell if he doesn't start making some things happen.

But regardless, nix is a guy I'd take. Just like Poe id be willing to trade up if necessary.

I think Nix could be a lot like Star Lotulelei. I have the Panthers DST in my fantasy leagues, so I have been paying some attention to them. Star collapses the pocket and enables the pass rushers around him to get to the QB. His impact doesn't show up on the stat sheet, but if you watch him, teams are having to put their C and a guard on him almost every play. It really makes me wonder what JJ would do with a guy like that next to him. If Nix frees up JJ to go 1v1 on their OT, I think that alone would make it worth the pick.

Star went 14th in the last draft due to that heart issue, and also the positional value. So I think it's pretty reasonable to project Nix around the 10th pick in this draft.

I like the ILB pick, and unfortunately it has to be addressed this early. If Cushing hadn't gone down, I'd say spend a 4-5th on this spot, but he really forces this pick.

I'm OK with McCarron. I mean, he's pretty good, has a great record, and has shown a lot of maturity in his career at Bama. I think he's pretty good at everything, but not really a gamechanger. Seems like a Joe Flacco type QB to me.

If you think Ahmad Dixon can play free safety, then sign me up. I expect Daniel Manning to be gone next year, so we definitely need help here. I kind of wonder if maybe we could get by with swapping ILB here, and taking a FS with good cover skills in the 2nd.

RT? You don't think Derek Newton is the answer for the future? We do have Brenan Williams and Quessenberry coming back though, so maybe we don't need to spend a pick on RT. Could probably use a TE, CB or DE here.

Yeah, CB is a big need. I know you said Dixon could play nickel, but I'd rather see a true CB take that role.

DE is another position of need, which may be addressed here. I think we will have at least 1 5th compensatory pick this year, so I could see an RB going there, and then some D-line help with the others.

The NFL is a passing league now. Aaron Rodgers, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, etc. these guys don't just manage the game. They go out and make plays and they win the game. McCarron's stats look pretty on paper, but the only game I've seen him go win is the A&M game this year against the worst defense in the country.

He could win his 3rd straight title this year because he's played behind 5 1st round NFL linemen, 2 1st round RB's, 2 1st round WR's, a defense that has had close to 10 guys drafted 1st round, and he has the best coach in college football.

The environment around him cultivates winning. All he has to do is not mess it up.

Watching James is like watching our solution at right tackle. I actually had been focusing on Tenn LT Antonio Richardson
but my eyes kept going to the other side as James just works his opponent. Good strength and quick feet but he seems to go into another gear when he is challenged by an opponent. He is known to have a mean streak and looks to dominate the other guy. I looked at OT in first but if James is available, he might be able to start game 1. Problem is I will probablu have to move him up at least one round as teams will learn he can play LT also.

Thanks for input.

Yeah I am unabashedly a Newton fan but has not been allowed to heal his niggling injuries this season. Regardless, Williams may not come back and Q is starting LG for future IMO. Also on your bolded, Dixon can play nickle but I do have Jackson in 6th if there.

Enjoyed your thoughts and may note more later.

Round 2 # 42 ILB University of Connecticutt Yawin Smallwood 6' 2 240 team suffered HC firing but he keeps trucking. 77 tackles 1 sack. 2012 next to Texans Trevardo WIlliams, YS had 120 tackles with 15 behind LOS.

Really like this draft. Rick/Gary wont do this good.

Haven't seen Dixon/Jackson play,

Really like the Nix pick. Cant imagine how good JJ will look with Nix drawing double teams.

McCarron is my favorite QB other than Bridgewater and possibly Hogan in this draft. Great job.

I like the players in your mock i'm familiar with. Having said that, I want a right tackle higher.

It dawned on me that your mock cannot and will not happen for one simple reason...

No tightend.

Jmo, but I would play quess at RT. I think he can be a solid starter there. He seems to have more balance there. And with the tackle position being so difficult, I would at least try him out there before kicking him inside.

Newton's short area agility is awful. His technique suffers because he can't quickly pick his feet up and put them down. He needs to do some latter drills or play some basketball...guards some guys out on the perimeter.

He has good overall athleticism and he's a big strong guy. But you cannot play tackle as horribly as he has.

Unsure if Daniels $6.25 cap will be back for his final year but I like what I see in Graham, especially with Keenum throwing to him. 6th round Griffin fits the mould & I do expect to see less emphasis on TEs as Posey and Hopkins continue to win trust. Keenum really spread the ball around against KC something I have not seen mentioned. Byrne is an unknown but I like him as well as a low round pick.

Why spend a higher pick on an OT if you can get a guy (James) who is consider "plug and play"? I suggest you watch Tennessee this Saturday against Alabama 2:30 CBS. I predict Tenn will be destroyed but O line should do well. Good evaluation game and we can look at my third rounder also.

Rey I respect your evals and opinion but we need Q @ LG to replace Wade Smith. I think most of Newton's laterals is due to his continuing knee injury which has him as probable every game. Not sure if his calf is 100% from Sept. I'm not counting on Williams but cannot rule him out either.

As I respect yours, but I'm going to disagree here. If you have a player that can play tackle, you play then at tackle not guard unless you already have a solid tackle.

We don't. I don't know if it's newtons knee or whatever it is, but he's not getting the job done. Williams needs some major technique work

Agree 100% but let's remember we are talking about next September and I think Texans are hoping Newton not only gets healthier but better. None of our back ups can beat him out and he is injured?

He's a Newton fan. LOL

It's Garys fault for rushing Newton back too soon.

I cant believe that the Texans Dr's screwed up the eval of Williams at the combine. (Yes I can) Williams needing microfracture surgery before he plays a down for the Texans is appartently status quo for the Texans medical staff.

James wont be there in the 5th. Probably not even the late 4th. Luckily the Texans will be picking early in the 4th. (Is that really lucky?)

defence heavy draft and i like it.
depth is an issue especially in the LB and secondary and this is addressed well.

I Would like an OT taken earlier but you clearly have your reasons.

What do you think about the future of our CBs???
