Default Re: Bud Adams in the Hall of Fame

I honestly do not see what he's done to EARN a place in the Professional Football Hall of Fame.

Longevity? Is that it? Being a shrewed business man in the early '60's? Really?

No NFL championships in 50+ years. Screwing honorable people like Bum Phillips and Earl Campbell. Running his franchise with the acumen of a used car salesman. Classless crap like flipping off the crowd (multiple times). Destroying one of the classic names, logo, and uniforms in the NFL. Pandering to his GREED.

Are these really the qualifications of a HALL OF FAMER???

If he gets in, it diminishes the Hall of Fame. Simply put, if they let this scumbag in the HoF, they cheapen the accomplishment and lower the standards of a hallowed institution.

I don't buy it. He bought a team and helped found the AFL. Big freakin' whoop. He didn't do anything positive for the league. The parts he helped make are the bad business parts of the NFL - moving teams, screwing cities, raiding public coffers, etc.

What positive impact did he have on the NFL? I mean, I don't much care for Al Davis, but I can name four or five positive things he did for the NFL, and I've never even lived in CA or been a fan of the Raiders.

To me, props for the AFL go to Lamar Hunt and Al Davis. Bud was just the little orange horse that followed Gumby around.

However, McGobbler is determined to get the assbag into the HOF

*Yes, I know the little orange horse is Pokey.

I cannot stand that fat faced f(*%. Between his lack of support for Dr. Doom in the HOF and his nose stuck up Bud Adams' ass, I honestly wish that f*&^er would move to Tennessee and stop bothering Houstonians. ****, I'd trade him for a damn New Yorker, even. He is just about the most worthless "writer" this city has ever had.

Damn, I miss the Post.

I won't invite the man to dinner anytime soon, but he held a pivotal role in the formation of "today's NFL".

If Art Modell, (who had rabid fan support in Cleveland and moved anyway) can be considered for the Hall, then why not Adams? Sure, the Oilers moved, but fan support had grown non-existent. Last Browns home game attendance? - 55,875 Last Oilers home game attendance? - 15,131 The Browns had a worse record to boot.

Revisionist I'm not. I may hate the man for the way he handled things in H-Town (from demanding upgrades we're still paying for to moving anyway, to not releasing the Oilers name), but he still helped make the league what it is.

Anyone asked who had the scratch to put down and buy a team could say the same thing. His credentials amount to "I was in that picture".

**** him.

After the revolution one of the former Soviet bloc countries (Estonia maybe?) took all the huge statues of Lenin, Stalin, and other Communist leaders in their national museum and moved them to guard the toilets. I'd be down to put Bud's bust in Canton's crapper.

Fun read...well...you know what I mean.

Quote:
Hennigan stayed on for two more seasons. Tight end Willie Frazier wasn't sure he would make it through one. On a team flight in 1964, Frazier's rookie year, the plane was forced to return to Houston shortly after takeoff. With one engine down and another sputtering, the pilot come on the intercom and made a crackly announcement that he was about to fly out over the Gulf of Mexico and "drop fuel."

Frazier panicked. A teammate asked him what was wrong.

Frazier was only a rookie, he explained. And now the pilot was going to have to "drop a few." Frazier figured he was a goner, for sure.
On a sad note the three-time Houston Oiler Willie Frazier died just last week on September 5th. Rest In Peace, Willie.

From the link above:

Quote:
The Oilers' contributions to the Pro Football Hall of Fame can barely be called Oilers contributions. Consider the case of:

- Ken Houston. One of the NFL's best safeties, Houston was traded by the Oilers to Washington in 1973 for five players and a middle-round draft choice. The Oilers' only real dividend in the deal was tight end Mack Alston, who caught 72 passes over four seasons. Ken Houston played eight more seasons with the Redskins and became a Hall of Famer.

- Charlie Joiner. A promising receiver, Joiner was traded by the Oilers to Cincinnati in 1972 along with linebacker Ron Pritchard for running backs Fred Willis and Paul Robinson. Willis gave the Oilers 2,241 yards in five seasons. Joiner went on to stardom with Cincinnati and San Diego, then went on to the Hall of Fame.

- Steve Largent. The Oilers drafted the Tulsa receiver in the fourth round in 1976, then marked him for waivers in training camp. With a shrug, they traded him to Seattle for an eighth-round pick the following year. The Oilers used that pick to draft Steve Davis, a wide receiver from Georgia. Davis didn't make the team. Largent, the NFL's all-time leading receiver when he retired, made the Hall of Fame.

- Willie Brown. A Grambling product, Brown was cut by the Oilers as an undrafted free agent. Denver signed him in 1963. Within a year, Brown was an All-AFL cornerback. Brown went on to Oakland, where he completed a Hall of Fame career spanning 16 seasons.

Also from the link above:

Quote:
But the team's penchant for fourth-estate fisticuffs was established by Bud Adams himself. It happened in 1966 at a meeting of the AFL brass at the Shamrock Hilton. Al Davis, owner of the Oakland Raiders, had just been named the league's new commissioner.

Adams was called in from his ranch outside Houston to attend to urgent league business. Jack Gallagher, the often-acerbic Post scribe, showed up with a photographer to snap a picture of the new commissioner.

Adams greeted Gallagher with a crack about his bald top. Gallagher, noting Adams' ranch attire, suggested that Adams might not want to be photographed with the group. Adams retorted with an ethnic slur, Gallagher challenged him and, in a flash, the two were rumbling on the floor. Gallagher landed a punch to Adams' jaw. Adams caught Gallagher in the nose with his elbow. Davis and Buffalo owner Ralph Wilson jumped into the pile in an attempt to break up the fight.

The Post carried shots of the tangled combatants across seven columns on the front page. Other papers ran pictures of Davis engaged in his first official act as the AFL's new boss - busting up a brawl.
Still having problems figuring out what Bud Adams did for the game and for the league. I mean, it's easy to see the things he's done to the league ...

I didn't know @$$-holes Had a Hall of Fame. We Playa-haters have one, but we've never actually inducted anyone. It's in Philadelphia (ironically enough) and there are annual nominations, but we hate on each other too much to vote anyone in. Someone suggested that all the former Playa-haters of the year be inducted, but we all hated that idea AND the muff-hugga who came up with it.
