Default Badboy's 2014 mock

Well I am liking my May choices even better after preseason game one.
1. QB David Fales San Jose St
2. ILB Andrew Jackson Western Kentucky
3. OLB Chaz Sutton S. Carolina (the other Clowney?)
4. DE/DT Taylor Hart Oregon
5. S Jacques Washington

My position on QB is Yates will be gone after 2013 and Schaub after 2014. Keenum will start 2015 and Fales will be a solid backup. I actually have Fales as a mid to late second but if he plays like last season, Houston would have to draft him in first or trade down.

Ninja Smith gone after 2013 (opening $9.5 million in cap space) with Crick replacing him and Taylor Hart the back up.

Default Re: Badboy's 2014 mock

You've got a list of good players there, but I've got issues with a couple picks.

1. Fales, I honestly don't know much about him since I haven't started paying much attention to college players yet, but I can't see spending a 1st round pick on a backup QB. I agree Schaub will be gone after the 2014 season but if I spend a 1st round pick on a QB, I want a starter.
2. Jackson, I like the player as an old fashioned run stopping 3-4 ILB or 4-3 MLB but I can't see him as a modern day 3-4 ILB with lots of pass coverage responsibilities. The NFL has become a passing league and ILB's need to handle pass coverage on TE's and RB's or assist on zone coverage with crossing routes. I think if we do draft an ILB it will be an OLB that we convert inside.

The rest of the players I don't know anything about yet but I do agree with an emphasis on defense. Dont' shoot the messenger, it's JMO. I sure hope Rick can re-structure Antonio's contract, but it's doubtful since rookies are alot cheaper. It'll be sad to see him go. I'd have DE as a higher priority, I'm still not convinced of Crick as a starter, 3rd round at the latest.

yeah i agree. Our starters are good but we have to maintain this level of defence for the future. ILB, OLB, CB, DT all have to be address mostly as back ups and future starters.
Offensively i only see late round TE and RB and possibly and early OG

Kubiak will continue to develop Keenum until he becomes the Houston Texans starter. If they do grab a QB in 1st it probably means bad news is ahead.

Honestly feel CB is the most likely position to be selected in next years draft. Texans simply have too many big contracts on the horizon to resign KJ.

Fales LT last season was Texan David Quessenberry so I'm sure Texans are very aware of him having studied game film extensively. I think Keenum who went undrafted, in his second year now with Texans if put into a competition would be equal to the challenge, thus do not see it as wise investment of first round selection. He cannot move like Case, arm strength equal, little bigger frame but still needs to improve core strength, in other words 2-3 year project just like Case.

Jackson is coming off injury, no thanks. I want a clean bill of health even if it means taking a player with lower ceiling. I cannot see him suddenly stay healthy once he gets in the NFL I want that pedigree. Do like position give me Chris Borland, Wisconsin in 5th rd. instead.

Sutten has showed me nothing, one of those intriguing athletic DL who disappear for long stretches. Developing prospect, like to see his dedication & work ethic improve his numbers should be much higher with Clowney funneling action his way on consistent basis. South Carolina has a ton of talent but very frustrating to watch them not reach potential. I would steer away from him this high in the draft.

Hart is a great fit for Texans. Very good mental approach, good reaction to reads, quick hands to disengage & excellent feet. Also very productive & consistent. Lacks NFL size but lets see if he gets bigger/stronger could be another Crick.

Would roll dice with Washington but see him mostly as special teams player. His speed will be critical for him to play safety after switching over from CB (added on a ton of weight) certainly a player to watch but doubt Texans draft another safety.

In response, in my scenario Keenum would replace Schaub in 2015 and would be an exclusive rights FA after making $495 K 2014. A very reasonable deal should be worked out especially if his back up would be Fales who would be entering his second contract year. Both together would less than half of Schaub's apprx $13-14 million 2015. Case should be a good QB but Fales could be a franchise QB and is definitely worth a first for us. He would not be the first pick in first round going to a team with a solid starting QB.

Wolfe we have drafted first round players that did not start before and the outcry seems to be to allow a QB a year or two to sit and learn. Also, QB is most important position.
Jackson would not have "lots" of coverage responsibility that would go mostly to Cushing. Remember knock on Dont'a Hightower was he could not cover, yet he did. Jackson did ok in that last season.

BL what injury to Jackson are you talking about? He sprained ankle in March @ practice and was reported as slight and day to day.

my apologies think I got him confused with Quanterus Smith, who tore his acl.

easy to do as you remember, I pushed Q Smith very hard prior to his injury. No apology needed; thought I had missed something and that would not be the first.

I do agree that the emphasis in next years draft will be most likely on defense. If Wade Phillips sticks around, which I sure hope he does, then I'd expect either a DT/DE to replace Antonio Smith in the first round or a CB with the end of JJo contract in site and KJ nearing FA as well. Although hard to do, replacing Antonio with a rookie or a high quality rookie CB for the future of the position will be alot cheaper than FA vets. and the team has to start putting itself in position to re-sign Watt and that's going to be a monster contract. I think Wade will want to keep the emphasis on the pass rush so we may go after someone like Anthony Johnson from LSU, there also seems to be alot of good CB's in next years draft.

I see it just a bit differently..Crick should move smoothly into Smith's starter position in 2014. No high round rookie needed and why I look to my board (Hart). I am a big proponent of A. Jackson and compare him to Dont'a Hightower who went first round as I predicted.

Corners I also see differently although I do like to add one annually. KJ is under contract thru 2014 & will cost less than Joseph did per annum, I'm thinking $5 m. Roc needs to turn it up but my interest is on AJ Bouye 6' 186 4.55 (pro day) with a 36 1/2 inch vertical. Great so far. Also want to encourage all to watch Travis Howard 6'1" 200 who is a bubble but could switch to safety. link: "Started every game as a junior and senior and totaled 81 tackles (51 solo), six interceptions and 11 pass breakups over his last two years in Columbus
Finished his Buckeye career with 96 total tackles (66 solos), 15 passes defensed, eight interceptions, 1.5 tackles for loss and one sack
Scored one touchdown in his career on a 30-yard interception return and also blocked a punt which was recovered for a touchdown." http://www.houstontexans.com/team/ro...-b981e745d51f/

Addressing your concern on Watt; Antonio's Smith's cap hit $9.5m + JJ's 2014 $3.6m = $13.1 m for Watt in 2015. He should be easy to extend.

Cushing if he returns healthy: $4.6m cap this season + Wade Smith's $3.75m = $8.35m and he needs to have an excellent season to get that.

Also remember in my scenario, Schaub going after 2014 saves $3.5m which could go towards re-signing Keenum.

I like Crick but don't have as much faith in him as you do until he proves some serious pass rush skill this season. I think he's good against the run but I don't see the QB pressure from him that I see from Antonio. If your right and he fills Antonio's shoes well then I'll think that we got very lucky, and I'll be very happy. I see Crick as very good depth/backup much like Jamison was. I just think that Wade will go for pass rush next year trying to put someone on the D-line that can put pressure on the QB opposite Watt. I think Watt will be more than $13.1m, I'm thinking he could be the highest paid defensive player in the NFL. I'm thinking in the Mario Williams range of $16-$17m. I think your about right on Cushing.

As for CB, I think you could be right on KJ, $5m +-, as well. I like Bouye as well but it's only been one preseason game, he's got a long ways to go before he's a proven #2 or #3 CB. I'll try to keep an out for Howard as well, not familiar with him. I also have hopes that Johnny Adams can contribute next season and eventually develop into a #3 or possibly a #2 CB, but he's got a long ways to go as well, and Roc Carmichael was very disappointing against the Vikings. I have high hopes for Brandon Harris as well, but until he proves it on the field he's still a ? We've got JJo for 2 more yrs. after this one but he's very expensive and KJ will be getting a pay raise, and everyone after them is questionable. Also I think you have to take a quality CB a yr. or 2 ahead of when you need them. A good CB is just slow to transition from college to the NFL. I can possibly foresee the Texans saving some money with OD after this season though. I agree on Schaub being gone after 2014 but how do you figure we only save $3.5m when he leaves, he makes on avg. $13.2m?

I think DE/DT and CB are the 2 most expensive positions on defense, pressuring the QB and pass coverage. I think we'll spend our 1st round pick there, and possibly our 2nd as well. How would you like:

1. Anthony Johnson-DT/DE from LSU
2. Aaron Colvin-CB or Marcus Roberson-CB or Justin Gilbert-CB
3. C.J. Fiedorowicz-TE from Iowa, OK that might take some luck but the draft is a long ways off and I can dream.

I think 3 out of the 4 O-line picks the last 2 yrs. will really contribute and solidify the O-line freeing us up to spend draft picks elsewhere, Brennan Williams being the only question mark.

The good thing is we have a full season to watch backups perform. We should now be at a phase where we can draft BPA or in my case a "franchise type player" at not need position (QB). Historically, Smith has not done that but we have never been in this situation before. If Crick does not exhibit enough to replace Smith of course my board changes as it is a very fluid thing. I do see Watt as being one to give a discount to remain in Houston but I could be wrong.

I will probably go corner in 6th if someone stands out. Should be good crop this year.

Schaub if you allow player to go you have to push up his prorated bonus. IIRC he has $3.5m in '15 &'16 + $1m each year "other". Base 2015 $12.5m - $9m must be adjusted to 2015= $3.5m savings.

In Past I have suggested OD and Joseph may be moved but don't see that now at least for the latter. Myers is a better possibility if Jones can get some work in at center rather than OG.

Fiedo you may recall is a fave of mine from mocks 3 Amigos have offered up. Big strong TE who could play OT with reasonable hands who might improve them this year.

Yup, he's got us taking Bryn Renner in the 2nd. How do you feel about another Tar Heel QB on our team? Have you looked at any film of him? I can't say I have, so I don't have a personal opinion of him, but I've read that he's a pocket passer, good game-manager, etc. etc. Sounds like Schaub the Second to me.

I don't think we'll go for a QB in 2014. I think Schaub will play here for 2 more years thus giving the Texans the chance and time to better evaluate Yates and Keenum. If they determine that neither of them is the future of the Texans QB position then the Texans will most likely take a QB in the 2015 draft, possibly going all in on someone they really like and move up in the 1st to get a good one.

I also was one of the guys that doubted Keenum stood much of a chance in the NFL but I must admit he impressed me when he played against the Dolphins with the 1's and 2's. I'm really beginning to see Schaub as the albatross around the Texans neck, limiting the team and weighing them down. I really wish Smith had not extended Schaub at the beginning of last season.

Smith extending MS was one of smartest things he ever has done. If not, who was our QB? The contract is actually very team friendly but I have to remove any prejudice I have against MS before discussing. lol
First we have to consider if not offered would MS gone elsewhere? His signing bonus was reasonable compared to what other QBs were getting. His base for 2012 was $4.4m and $7.25m this year & cap was $10.75 & $14.5.

You could be right about no QB in '14 draft, however, most agree it is better for a rookie to sit 1-2 years under a good starting vet and learn and adjust. Also, '14 should be QB heavy with several going first round. IE, we can get a good one @ #32. If Keenum is as good as I think he will be by 2015, I could see him starting and backed by Yates (if he agrees. He might want to start elsewhere).

As set, this roster should eliminate Texans for having to desperately plug one position as we did this year with WR2. So..if a franchise type player at premium position is there and other "needs" can be addressed lower why not? When have the Texans ever gone "all in" to move up in first? Smith thinks draft picks are valuable and has moved up but not by going all in.

Fales or McCarron if there are very accurate players like Keenum. I will be watching to see if they have a higher ceiling. Let's use MS as he is the best we have & should be 2014. It would be sweet if we could lose his 2015 &'16 contract and bring in a couple good draft selections.

I am a big, big fan of McCarron. If he is there when we pick, it would be foolish not to take him. Great size, good mobility, great composure, accuracy, and NFL caliber arm-strength (though it won't set the league on fire). Let him sit for a year to learn the playbook/system, then sit back and enjoy the 2015/16 season.

Hey 65, good to hear from you! I like McCarron over Fales also but predict he will go before Houston picks. Like Luck, I see AJ as complete package especially if he could sit behind Shaub.

I am still around. Busier than ever, but I still try to keep abreast of what is going on.

I really think McCarron slides. He is going to be called a product of a fantastic Alabama team, and/or people will fall in love with the athleticism of other QBs.

Maybe I'm just expressing frustration with MS. Against the Dolphins he had several passes that had way to much air under them and again looked like he did at the end of last season, no arm strength and having to wind up his whole body to throw 20-30 yds. down field. I just think there's better talent out there to be had (not sure where) but we'll never know while MS is here and until we give someone else a real chance. Just because the Texans have never gone "all in" in the 1st round doesn't mean it won't happen some day. Again frustration with MS, I just don't see us going to the SB with him.

A QB in 2014 to sit for a year behind a good QB is a good idea, but I'm not sure I want MS tutoring a rookie QB. I have to take your word that 2014 is a good QB year, I haven't really looked at the QB's much. You put out some names for me to look at though. Going BPA all the way through the draft would be nice but you might not see glaring needs right now, I can foresee a need possibly at DT/DE-I don't think Crick is the answer to the Ninja, OLB-Montgomery and T. Williams haven't shown me anything that makes he think they'll provide a heavy pass rush now or in the future. Jefferson and Tuggle have shown me more than our draft picks which is sad for our scouting dept. and coaching staff on talent evaluation. Possibly a need at CB with teams playing so much nickle 3 starter level CB's are needed. While I had hopes for Brandon Harris I'm beginning to have doubts there since he can't seem to beat out McCain, and I'd really like CB to become a team strength with depth situation. Roc has looked bad in the first 2 preseason games, and I don't want to hang my hat on Bouye just yet. Also adding a superstar athletic TE would be nice as well if we try to save some money and lose OD at the end of the season. Possibly a glaring need at RT as well depending on what happens this season, we'll see.

I agree on MS but on this MB there have been comparisons between him and other good QBs and he is a favorable matchup. A person does not have to be great at something to teach as we know with Kubiak.
