Meh.

We don't know how it will turn out ultimately, but Montgomery and B. Williams stunk of bust from the minute they were drafted. They were both risky (for different reasons), high ceiling, low floor type players. The whole idea behind taking them was that Montgomery is a 1st round talent *if* there weren't work ethic concerns, and B. Williams is a 1st round talent *if* there weren't injury concerns. Well, Montgomery came into camp out of shape and B. Williams came into camp hurt.

Dollars to donuts Smith would have gone a different way with those picks if he could do it again.

Braman is another one I don't understand why they keep trying him at OLB (maybe they tried ILB & it was worse, I don't know). He's talented. He works hard. He has a mean streak. If he's not getting it done on the edges, I'd like to see him attacking the LOS from the inside.

He's a beast, you'd think we could find a way to use that to our advantage.

(& it's not that I think ILB is a step down from OLB, I just think they are different & we need to find a place for some of these "good" players to play).

Well, let's look at this -

ILB -
51 Mays, Joe
49 Collins, Cameron
56 Cushing, Brian
61 Davis, Ja'Gared
52 Dobbins, Tim
51 Sharpton, Darryl

OLB -
50 Braman, Bryan
63 Jefferson, Willie
64 Johnson, Delano
59 Mercilus, Whitney
53 Mohamed, Mike
57 Montgomery, Sam
58 Reed, Brooks
47 Tuggle, Justin
54 Williams, Trevardo

That's 15 LB's in camp. I think we can say with 100% certainty (except one thing which I will now knock on wood for) that Cushing, Mercilus, and Reed make it. Fairly safe imo Sharpton, Mays, Dobbins and T Williams. That is 7. So, that only leaves two by your count. I think ST will play a role here too.

You have:

Jefferson
Braman
D Johnson
M Mohamed
S Montgomery
Tuggle
Collins
J Davis

That's some tough cutting there. I see very little chance for Mohamed and Davis given the talent and depth. D Johnson, Tuggle, and Collins have a long shot chance. I see more PS chance for them.

Now we are down to Jefferson, Braman, and Montgomery. I could see them carrying all of these guys IF Montgomery can get healthy and come around. Jefferson and Braman should be ST studs. I realize Braman is limited as a LB, but he has real value as a ST, and I think they keep him based on ST.

Trevardo Williams is not getting cut and neither is Brendan Williams, what the hell is wrong with you. Same for Montgomery, those guys will be IR'd before they are cut. What the hell have you been smoking and how much do they charge for an eighth, seriously. I need weed.

I don't even think they'll end up on IR. They weren't drafted in the third round to be stashed. At the least, they are expected to practice with the backups and starters throughout the season.

I think reed being able to play inside will be a factor. Ja'gared isn't getting much hype, but I like what I saw from him in college.

I don't think Dobbins, sharpton or Mays are a lock to make it.

But I don't see how we could cut one of the udfa olb's if they show pass rush ability. I don't have any faith in any of our edge rushers to put any consistent pressure on qb's. I'd almost be more willing to put crick and Jamison out there on passing downs.

Judging by what we saw last year, that might be our best hope.

I don't think they are a lock and said so. Having said that, I'll be shocked if the final roster doesn't include all 3 of these guys (barring that thing I knock on wood about)

ILB-

Cushing
Mays
Sharpton
Dobbins

PS - Cameron Collins

OLB -
Reed
Mercilus
Braman
S.Montgomery
T.Williams

PS - Tuggle & Jefferson.

This is another of those positions I could see them hiding a player or two on IR. Some of these guy's have a lot of promise and would be tough to cut. Only issue is that players on IR count against the cap - post 53 man roster.

Neither Williams nor Montgomery have shown much , one of them could be IR fodder this season , basically a redshirt season to learn the position and NFL game. The closer we get to the regular season and they are still playing poorly , the greater the odds it plays out with one of them IR'd.

The guy's I have listed as PS at this point are still longshots to make the final 53 even with one of the drafted rookies IR'd.

Braman aint going anywhere , he's the best ST player on a piss poor ST squad. I couldn't imagine how pathetic they would have been last season without he and Alan Ball ....

BTW it was Jefferson's blown lane assignment that led to the big KO return. Not so sure I'd pencil him as a ST stud. As Kubiak stated , he has a long way to go.

Yes, he was. So was Ja'Gared Davis. And... Frierson? I didn't think any of them really flashed.

I agree, Ive been advocating this mean since last year. Braman just screams ILB to me. And I thought when Cushing went down, we would at least entertain the idea of shifting Braman inside, but never did. At this point, I doubt they make that move, but I still am convinced it would be a great move.

IIRC, they tried him at ILB in the preseason last year. I could be wrong about that, though...

Braman doesn't have it upstairs folks, starting LB's have to think believe it or not. Situational pass rusher? maybe. Straight line gunner? Definitely.

I for one am in no big rush to see Braman trailing his man for a touchdown because of a brainfart/blown coverage/missed assignment. What the hell do I know, I'm the guy who exaggerates and doesn't understand the meaning of 'finally' ... LOL.

Well then lets get Ol' Bobby some high quality H2O from the glaciers of Nepal if it will help him remember his assignments and not miss tackles.
