Default Casserly says Texans potential target for 2nd rd QBs

Was just watching NFL network this AM, and was pretty surprised when I heard him say this. He said that Kubes has "publicly stated several times that the Texans need to draft a young QB." (I personally can't really remember any of these times) He claims that a Barkley or Geno or Nassib may be a target if they fall to us.

Personally, while I like the fact that drafting a QB would put ole noodle arm Schaub on the hot seat, I think we need to draft for need instead of future prospects.

I'm all for drafting a QB if they are the best player but I'd like to see us go after that right side of the OL. I'd like us to possibly get Williams RT from NC.

I still think Derek Newton is a decent player, won't ever be a pro bowler (but considering any more pro bowlers puts us over the cap, we need solid not superstar players unless they are on a rookie contract)

I'd like to see us draft a stud NT and perhaps a S to learn under Ed.

Don't see Barkley or Nassib making it to us, and wouldn't want Smith.

I doubt if any of these three make it to us, but if they do, I would be interested.

I'm looking at TE, LB, RT as the most likely choices in rd 2 but we'll see. Can't rule out DB or DL either. In fact Margus Hunt or Short would be good picks here. Tons of guys that can be impact players or at least solid starters still available.

^^^ This.

Except I'd go ahead and just say BPA at TE, LB, RT, DL. DB only if there's absolutely no one at the other positions that grade out at this round.

I kinda could see this to be honest. With the kind of money we've got invested in Schaub, it makes sense for us to take a qb somewhere in the 2nd-3rd round to develop now. That way if we decide to part ways with Schaub in 2014 that developmental qb is ready for 2015 after sitting for a year....This would be comensurate with our window of opportunity to win now.

This also affords Yates the chance to land the job if by some impossible circumstance Schaub gets hurt in 2014..................yeah, that was sarcasm

It's crazy to think that the Chiefs gave up the 34th selection for Alex Smith, when they could have held onto it and waited to see what QBs fall to that spot. At least 2 of Geno, Nassib and Barkley will be there at that pick for a fraction of the cost of Alex Smith. I bet the 49ers trade back from that spot and let the Cardinals or Jets jump up to get one of those QBs.

IŽd be 100% behind drafting a QB - if we feel like a franchise QB is just falling in our laps. I really like Yates, but I think is ceiling is a good game manager. And if we don`t want to suffer through a lengthy adjustment period, it would be smart to get Schaubs successor and let him sit a year or two.

That being said - don`t reach. Only take a QB if you are in love with him. This team has several holes, so the only reason to take a QB is, if we believe we grab a potential franchise QB at a bargain.

And in the end, I don`t believe that any of the top 3 remaining QBs will be there when we pick.

Doubtful that any of those guys outperform Smith this year and there will be several good (better) QB prospects available next year (e.g. Boyd, Manziel, Bridgewater, etc.)

Given Yates two years in system + his rookie starting time to give confidence, there is no QB in this draft that is better than he. He is our developmental QB and depsite others posts I think he has not reached his ceiling. Yes, one of these QB could beat out
Keenum but I would not place a second round pick on PS & woul not want to carry three QBs on roster this season. Let's use our next four picks to address weak areas. OLB, NT, ILB & safety. We should be able to get a decent OT in 5th also.

Eh - a bird in the hand....

Besides, as lackluster as Smith has been, the slight resurgence over the last two season (well, the 2011 and 1/2 of the 2012 season) gives me no confidence that any of those guys ends up better than Smith even in the long run (much less in their rookie or sophomore year).

The bottom line is that any team looking for a future top-10 NFL QB probably has lots of better places to look than the 2012 NFL draft. If it happens, it wouldn't be the first time zero good NFL quarterbacks came out of a draft class.

I think we should and Asserly thinks we are potentially going to? Great. Not only do I feel stupid for agreeing with Asserly it isn't going to happen now. I say we draft a punter in the second now.

So Alex Smith should do better than any of those QBs listed, but they should be looking ahead to the 2014 draft for a QB? Well, if they do too good next year, say 5+ wins, then they probably won't have a shot at getting Boyd or Bridgewater, who will likely be top 3 picks. JFF might be available, but I don't really see him as a franchise QB in the NFL.

On top of that, you gotta think about the future in salary cap football. The Chiefs could cut Alex Smith after this year and will have paid him 10.25m for his one year of service. Compare that to a pick at 34, who will likely cost about 5-6m over 4 years. Yeah, I think I'll take my chances with Geno Smith in Andy Reid's system, thanks.

I dont think its all that crazy .... Alex Smith is a proven NFL starter at the QB spot. His 2011 season was great - only 5 INT's in 16 starts (445 attempts) , I believe that tied an NFL record.
Thru 10 games in 2012 he was even better than 2011 posting a QB rating of 104.1 and a 70+% completion percentage prior to the injury and the decision to stick with Kaepernick

Ive gone on record as saying I didnt think any of this years QB crop was of NFL quality - I stand by that statement.

I'd take Smith over any QB in this years draft .... (next year is a totally different story).

It'd be more accurate (but not totally accurate) to say, "Alex Smith should do better than any of the QB's listed, or they should be looking ahead to the 2014 draft for a QB."

But, yes, I am essentially saying I would rather take my chances with Alex Smith in 2013 and whatever the future holds than with Geno Smith/Matt Barkley/etc. in 2013, 2014, 2015, etc.
