And NO, I don't want him on any team I cheer for

Wow. How far you can fall in such short time.
It was two years ago that this guy was the primary target for the Texans. Flash backward to the free agency period of 2011...the Texans pay royally for the acquisition of Asomugha, they have a shut-down corner and are instantly upgraded to AFC South favorites. The Texans select JJ Watt, but the play of Asomugha fails to live up to the potential envisioned by coaches and fans. Would the Texans finish as AFC South champs in 2011? Would they have made the playoffs? What would we finish in 2012 with Asomugha and KJ as our two corners and without Danieal Manning at Safety since we had paid J-Jo and Manning's combined salaries for only one player in Asomugha? The ramifications of decisions like this are staggering when you think about it. Rick Smith fans will say "He has earned his money as GM by grabbing J-Jo and Manning rather than only Asomugha," and the Rick Smith opponents will say "It was only because Asomugha priced himself out of our comfort zone, it was a gift that Asomugha was too expensive, rather than Smith's GM skills." 32 is 32. I don't think he can recover what he had with the Raiders. Time and some doubts about his abilities will be too much for him to overcome. I'd like to get people's opinions on moving him to a Safety position. He has the talent and the natural skill level to succeed, but maybe it's just that he can't perform as a CB any longer? Give him the back end of the field to roam and patrol, and maybe he has another 3 to 5 years left in him???

I read somewhere that opposing QBs had a rating of 120.6 this season when targeting him.

Reports/rumors state that he would go out to his car and eat his food in his car rather than be around the team. If true, that tells us that he was miserable and his play on the field was a reflection of that unhappiness. IMO. I don't know why, and frankly it doesn't matter, but the truth is that he was very good prior to going to Philly...and with how it fell apart for him, who knows if he's completely broken or just in a funk from a mindset perspective. Another thing, which I know you know, is that he was not in a good defensive scheme for his purported strong-suit in terms of his favored style of coverage. I think that Philly team is really messed up, much like the Jets. There's a dysfunction there, and I don't know that Chip Kelly can turn that ship, honestly.

He just lost a step and at his size he couldn't afford to. I watch him play and he just can't run like he used to (he's 31 years old). I think the Raiders bailed on him at the right time. It's the one right thing they have done in a long time. That and kill Al Davis with a drone strike.

It will be interesting to see what he gets in free agency. I can see some crappy team needing a CB might overpay him in hopes that he returns to form from a few years ago. Jags, Bucs, Browns, Lions, etc all could go after him. After the way he played last year, I think anything more than 2 years 10 million would be overpaying.

Could a team do a 1-year deal rather than a 2-year deal?
With a 1-year deal, you get a rental and can dump him with no 2nd year cap ramifications, right? I don't see him nor his agent agreeing to that sort of deal, frankly, but wondering if it would even be viable as an option for a team who wants to kick the tires first. I really think Houston should have gone this route with Peyton Manning, btw.

Yes, it's just not that common for a player to get one for more than minimum. You could sign someone to a 10 year deal if you wanted to, there's really no limit.

Eagles 2011 FA Dominque Rogers-Cromartie - still playing with team and did well Namdi Asomugah - lost a step and didn't live up to his contract, currently being released. Jason Babin - Don't know what happened there but now he's playing in Jville. Kullen Jenkins - Didn't hear much out of him, believe he's still with the team Vince Young - currently trying to get on a team after being released and not making the Buffalo Bills 3rd string QB spot. Evan Mathis - OL so don't know how he's done but Philly QBs got sacked alot. Ronnie Brown - Don't even know anymore. Houston Texans 2011 FA J-Jo - Had a good season in 2011, 2012 not so good but still better than Asomugah Manning- One of the team leaders, had a very productive 2 years in Houston so far. Tim Dobbins - quality depth over the last two years and played at a very good level. Lawrence Vickers - that didn't work, but at the time we had Leach. P Brad Maynard - eh...he's a punter. Hardly a huge splash but got more for our money than Philly did. |

There's a FA Tracker thread sticky that should be used for all FA posts

Put him in at RCB & let him use the sideline and I bet he looks pretty good again.

Why kidding? I bet he'd make a heck of a Nickel and would probably sign for the league minimum with Houston just to get a ring next year.

he is a man cover corner. He stunk when he was asked to play off and looking a the qb. All we do is man cover. Mostly at least. I'm not saying we can afford him. That's another issue alltogether.

You are spot on! He was completely misused in Philly. Why would you sign a guy for all that coin then not play to his strengths. I'd take him in a heartbeat. Maybe KJax can play some FS
