Thing is , the Texans couldnt cut three contributors and come away with that kind of cap space and improve the team with whats saved. Atlanta likely tries to replace these players thru the draft - The Texans have more holes to fill without creating more. Can you replace or upgrade any of the following with their cap savings - Ninja - $6m (I think his guaranteed money is $3m , might be $6m which would mean only $3m in savings) Big chunk of cash there but its a premium position and will likely cost significantly more in FA. Makes more sense to extend him and spread some of that money out rather than cutting him and having dead money. Walter - $2.4m Walter had a decent season , with Posey gone its much more difficult to part ways with him. A comparable FA is going to be more expensive than that $2.4m savings .... and they will likely draft a WR early as it is. Just doesnt make sense to cut him. OD - $2.4m Anyone think they are gonna replace OD for $2.4m .... aw hell naw. Any other players that anyone would like to cut ? Make a list and lets evaluate them one by one on a replacement cost basis. Wade Smith is another tho I cant recall his cap numbers off the top of my head ....

Walter @ 2.4 = Rames-Barden $$$$.
Give me Barden and a 1-2 rd draft pick (Rodgers/Swope) = WR issues solved. With Reed moving inside a versatile OLB like Gooden in the 3rd would add much needed speed/playmaking to the OLB core. With Goodens 4.47 speed he could cover TE's or Vereen type RB's on 3rd downs and allow Quin to play deep more often. |

We can save $3M letting him go. Start Brooks on the left side, resign Caldwell for $500K for depth. I wouldn't be opposed to seeing Caldwell on the left either.

Ok the o-line was worse last year than the previous seasons. I dont agree with letting Wade go and having only 2 of the original 5 guys from 2 years ago.
Sure wade smith didnt look very good last year, but i promise you it could be worse. Remember in the Carr days with that oline ? D. Brown and Myers cant make up for the rest of the oline should they all continue to fail as they appeared to do much of last season. So no lets leave o-line as is without making it worse IMO

The problem was that they weren't worth a crap when we needed them to be. 3rd & 1, when we needed that yard, or 3rd & 18 when we needed that protection. That's when they failed us the most & I think we can expect improvement in those areas in the second years of Brooks, Jones, & Newton's (as a starter). I don't see any reason to believe Wade Smith will improve in this area especially since we were hoping he'd improve in this area after an abysmal 2011.

Me too. I think it's due to ZBS blocking in units, with your "next door neighbor" encouraged to reach out & help if he can. Brown & Myers are pretty good "neighbors" to have. When the unit wins, Wade gets a "W".
It'll be interesting to see what the Texans do about Wade. |

On the top you will see where he had under 4.0 ypc in games, we played the jags twice and titans twice in those games. The titans ranked 24th in opp rushing yards per game allowing 127 ypg The Jags ranked 30th in opp rushing yards per game allowing 141 ypg Ok the second row is where he had over a 4.0 ypc in games. We played the colts twice. We played Denver we had a 31-11 lead before the Denver Rally. The Colts ranked 29th in opp rushing yards per game allowing 137.5 ypg The Broncos ranked 3rd in opp rushing yards per game allowing 91.1 ypg The Ravens ranked 20th in opp rushing yards per game allowing 122.8 ypg Sure there are certain situations to where we were down and had to rally, but there is no consistencey here. We did not dominate the weaker teams and get beat down by the better teams. In fact it appears we struggled more against the weaker teams, minus the colts who had the 3rd worst rushing defense. My point is if u go back 2 seasons ago you will see that we were dominant regardless of who we played. That should be a concern to some people. It is to me

There were a lot of bad on last year's OL, but a lot of good as well. I honestly think our offense wouldn't have struggled so much had Newton not gotten hurt.

After letting Briesel and Winston walk last year and seeing the results of that in weak run blocking thruout the season , Im not so sure I'd be comfortable with Brooks , Caldwell and Jones at the guard positions for the duration. You dont cut guy's to save a buck and downgrade ....

Cutting Wade Smith will save us $3M against the cap. Bonus money is already accounted for. I've been wanting to cut Wade. After a poor 2011 & a not much improved 2012, I still support the move.
Also, we must remember that it was not our plan to go into the season with Ben Jones or Derek Newton playing anywhere near the number of snaps they had. I do believe Newton won the job outright in training camp, but I'm also sure when they cut Winston, the plan was to go with Butler & Caldwell. Butler was lost due to injury, turning what should have been a Newton/Butler rotation into a Newton/Harris rotation. Ben Jones got his job due to injury of Caldwell. I think Jones was playing better than Caldwell & earned more playing time, but as we've seen with all our rookie linemen, consistency was the issue & rotating them was their way of dealing with that consistency. The Texans chose to go with a rotation of Ben Jones & Brandon Brooks instead of Jones & Caldwell which also attributed to the drop off. In my mind, that was because they intend to start both Jones & Brooks in 2013. They accepted some additional drop off in hopes of long term production. I was very high on Newton from day one. He was already a big upgrade over Winston in pass protection & appeared to start to gel in the run game before his injury. When he & Graham were out of the line up was when our offensive struggles began. When he returned to the line-up we had definitely lost some ground, but was back on track. It appeared to me that his pass protection suffered & he retreated in pass pro much sooner than he should, giving up ground & basically sitting in Schaub's lap. Our passing game was much more hurried since then, rarely providing enough time for deeper passing routes to develop. I think Kubiak & Schaub overcompensated for Newton, but Harris provided no relief & I'd be surprised if he's signed for another year. I don't see starting Brandon Brooks at LG as a downgrade.

What difference does that make? Noodle arm can't throw a deep route anyway.

If the Chiefs sign Sean Smith then the Dunta Robinson addition is merely icing on the cake for them. They've been improving this off-season. They should not have released Eric Winston though. That right side of their offensive line is going to be their downfall, both in the run game and pass game.

With the #1 tackle in the draft.... Luke Joekel. If he struggles, he'll be their RT in 2013, Branden Albert (who they just resigned) will continue at LT. If he's up to the task, Joekel will be their LT & Albert will move to RT.
I like their plan to replace their RT better than ours.

D-Rob is one of my all-time favorite Texans/former-Texans, and now that he's a
Chief it's just one more reason to support my "other" NFL team. |
