He is not worth that much, but depending on how good his agent is, he may be asking for that much? Everyone knows we're looking at Keo starting if GQ isn't here, and that scares everyone!

IMO, GQ should be a pro bowl safety. I hope we keep him somehow, even if its for that much.

Jones got a $65k signing bonus that put him over the veteran minimum, but as I said earlier, I still think he's excluded due to the level of pay - and as I also said before, Vickers doesn't need to be cancelled out as he wasn't an expiring contract.

Don't know that I agree with all the other "key" players.

Wonder how much of our remaining cap space will have to go to "peripheral costs" like IR, PS, etc. Seems like, as things stand, we are going into this season with virtually no money without "creative" budgeting and heavy duty arm twisting. With what the appearance of our cap is, unless we hit it right on almost every Draft pick (ones that are close to "game ready"), we're going to have a real hard time of going into the season as good let alone better than the team we had last year. The Texans can't afford a bunch of back-loaded contracts. They have to sign Cushing and Watt in the next couple of years. Just can't let those 2 go test the market. They need to lock them up long term before they hit FA. Especially Watt! The Texans cannot lose Watt IMO!

My nephew talks to Barwin a local bar they both go to (my nephew had been a bar tender there), and Barwin told him on Sunday night that he know he had a bad season and is willing to take a one year deal to prove last year was a fluke. He also thinks he put on to much weight last season and that cost him some quickness.

He also said that if some team threw him a big offer he would take it. He is not dumb.

Franchise Tag on Quinn? I like the guy and how well he fits what this scheme wants from him. He's really done pretty much whatever the team has needed him to do and that's been big. I agree signing him is a priority this offseason, but the tag? I mean if I thought he was an elite FS I'd say no brainer, but he's not elite. Versatile? Def. Elite? Nope.

The bigger concern I have though is that if he does walk that the FO would whiff on really addressing the spot leaving is with Keo annd Demps, which are closer to in the box safeties and are constantly burnt when asking to cover.

If Barwin had a season closer to last year he'd get good money, but he really struggled this year and the sacks, or lack of doesn't paint the entire picture. I liked what I began to see from Mercilus down the stretch and I think he could easily challenge for a starting spot next year which would leave Barwin as depth. Of course this is still pending what the staff decides to do with Reed at LB this coming season. I'd be happy if they offered Barwin a one year deal and he went back to last year's playing weight. Still not sure if Braman is ready for more snaps or has the tools to be an every down player.

I'm content with letting Cody leave, physically he doesn't bring something you can't replace though I will miss on the nose.

This might be the best option for the Texans. Barwin gets a 1 yr deal to prove himself. Move Reed to ILB (Not as thrilled about this as some.) Draft another OLB in the early rounds (1 or 2) to develop behind/rotate with Mercilus and Barwin. Then, if Barwin doesn't prove himself, you have someone to step in. If he does prove himself, he will probably opt for the big $$$ and leave like Mario, and we'll have someone to step in just like Mercilus did when Mario left. I still think the Texans will need to draft an ILB in the mid to later rounds for better depth and ST play.

Well, the "hometown discount" is out the window. I like Barwin & I think last season could've been a fluke, but I believe he will have a team throw more then 1 yr deal at him which could lead to his departure. Possibly even Cincy or Cleveland which could possibly be right up his alley if he wants to head back home. I would like to see him back, but I have my doubts. Giving him a long term deal worth big money would not be a smart move on the Texans behalf.

The link to projected compensatory picks is a Lions site. It's not official. I doubt Tennessee gets a 3rd. They lost Finnegan, but signed Wimbley and Hutchison to good sized contracts. I think they will cancel out.

Could you go into a bit more detail about the Texans? 3rd round pick for Mario seems a given. A bit confused how you rate Allen as worthy of a 6th, but Dreesen – whose contact was similar and Brisiel – whose contract was much bigger, warrant no additional picks? I know they signed Bradie James and Donnie Jones, but each of them got one year deals at less than a million. Shouldn’t the Texans be looking at a 4th or 5th for Brisiel and a 6th or 7th for Dreesen?

Signed players cancel out lost players, so Bradie James does knock out Dreesen, and Jones knocks out Brisiel, because there are no lower-salaried players to knock out.
In the past, players making 890k have counted. Last year, the only player in that price range was Reggie Kelly, signed by Atlanta, and he counted.
However, the league is not reliable with counting players under $1 million, so it is possible that Brisiel and/or Dreesen will get you picks, should be a 5 or 6 for Brisiel and a 6 for Dreesen, Dreesen would be knocked out first

Vet minimums have not counted in the compensatory equation. And I don't know for whom the Bengals received a compensatory pick for. But, it wasn't for Reggie Kelly, who signed with the Falcons as a street free agent on 8-16, months after the free agency period. The Texans will get picks (likely 6th round) for Brisiel and Dreessen.

Wimbley and Hutchinson were released by their previous teams, so they do not count as the free agent signed. Like Peyton Manning, they were street free agents.

Texans will meet with Connor Barwin’s representatives

After playing out his rookie contract, I’d be surprised if Texans outside linebacker Connor Barwin didn’t test free agency.

Still, both sides will make an effort toward a deal before that happens. Barwin wants to stay in Houston, and the Texans want him back. The trick will be agreeing on his value.

This weekend in Indianapolis, the Texans are planning to meet with Barwin’s people face-to-face for the first time this offseason, according to people familiar with the situation.

The Texans made Barwin an offer before the season began, after a 2011 season in which he had 11 1/2 sacks. Double-digit sacks typically earn pass rushers big-time contracts. And while the Texans’ offer would have placed Barwin among the 10 best-paid Texans, it didn’t come close to the contracts some of the league’s better pass-rushing outside linebackers have garnered lately.

Barwin took a risk and declined the offer, expecting to repeat – or at least get near – his 2011 numbers. That didn’t happen. This past regular season, Barwin only had 3 1/2 sacks.

That number works against Barwin and one that works in favor of the Texans, who don’t have a lot of money to spend.

A few things work in Barwin’s favor. He has shown the capability to put up big sack numbers, he can still grow at the position having not played it long and he’s a good locker-room guy. There is also the matter that the number of quality, young (Barwin turns 27 in the fall) outside linebackers in free agency and the number of NFL-ready pass rushers in the draft are both low.

Let me go on record, I will be highly disappointed if Barwin is paid, or has a $4M+ cap number.
