Default Foxboro - One visiting fan's take (long) lol

We had a great trip up to Boston. Went to the Samuel Adams brewery, saw some sights, ate some damn good seafood, and met a lot of really cool people.

Gameday at Gillette Stadium is nothing like what we enjoy here and, folks, this is a good thing.

The walk to the stadium, which is deep in the outer 'burbs of Boston, was in it's 3rd to 4th minute when some of the locals caught a glimpse of our jerseys. I in my blue 23, my brother in his red 99, my buddy in a blue 8, and my brother's buddy in a blue hoody. A group of guys starts yelling something that we could barely understand but I was able to make out 'Houston, you have a problem' (sooooo original) and something about Adrian Foster. We moved on. Then out of the blue comes the same insults, this time courtesy of a PA system, so we would be sure to hear it. Basically they called me fat (I could lose a few lbs lol) and something about JJ Twat. Nothing we couldn't handle. Welcome to Foxboro!

Patriot Place was next (after a 1 mile hike from the cab dropoff point). Situated just outside the stadium grounds and amounts to a strip mall with a movie theater. Nice to look at it, loaded with chain restaurants and bahs, Old Navy, and some other stuff. We went into Toby Keith's I Love This $7 Beer and had a beer before going in. Nice place, would be interesting to see a development like that here. The stadium was very nice and about as old as Reliant. We walked the 2 miles worth of ramps to get up to the nosebleeds where our seats were located. We were immediately greeted by a beer vendor suggesting a PBR after our long hike up the ramps. PBR. Seriously. Pass. We grabbed some grub and took our seats.

While sitting there waiting for the game to start the stadium video boards were running the ATL/SEA game which was nice. The stadium has legit free wifi and worked amazingly well throughout the game. Score one for the chowdah heads because I'm essentially unreachable on gamedays at Reliant.

We made nice with folks immediately around us and everyone was very friendly. Beyond that 2 row buffer things were a little different as the game progressed.

First, I'm not one to paint an entire fanbase on the actions of a few in our section but I'll do it anyway because it's my only sample group. These people know nothing about football. They stand and scream while Tommy is on offense, they make precious little noise when on 3rd or 4th downs when their D is on the field. They ***** about every call that doesn't go their way. Every incompletion. Etc, etc. Then some of the friendlies explain that their stadium has no seats in the endzones, thus the reason it's so quiet. Maybe but most people were making noise. Score one for us.

As the game moved into the second half and the wheels started to fall off the Texans' hopes of advancing the PBR kicked in and a large chunk of the crowd went full a-hole. Screaming at people, fights all over the place, just a general malt liquor-fueled and profanity-laden bar fight in the stands. It was kind of sad, actually. Again, those immediately around us couldn't have been more pleasant, good-natured ribbing aside. I figured that 90% of the fans there couldn't possibly be any cooler. That means the remaining 10% was made up of nearly 7,000 *******s, all in one spot. Ugh.

We ended up leaving before the end of the game to get ahead of what was described as an insane traffic jam and made our way back to the cab line. We easily beat the traffic out.

So there it is. Summed up, it made me proud to be from a town that does it the right way and quite possibly permanently quenched my desire to see any more road games.

The Bucs are now doing this here and yes it is very nice. I thought all of the NFL stadiums were supposed to be doing this now.

Good read and thanks for the info.
I experienced the NE crowd when I went to SB 38 at Reliant,
I have to say they were not too friendly then even in our town.
On the way out of the game after the Pats had one, they were chanting "Houston sucks" all the way down the ramps, go figure.
I don't like to pigeonhole any one group of fans, but after 6 years of tailgating with the Blue Crew and meeting a lot of opposing fans they are my least fav.

Thanks guys for representing the Texans in NE.

In regards to the noise, I was thinking that myself while watching on TV. It's not very loud when we're on offense.

Tell me about it. I went in December and it was a horrible at the stadium. while we were in Boston it was cool but once we got to the stadium it was a whole different story.

I almost got jumped in the RR and was bullied the whole game. I stood my ground and didn't budge. It took a lot for me not to lose control.

But seriously those people have NO RESPECT for other teams fans.

But what i did like about the stadium is that they STAND the whole game..

Something we don't do...

then you would be just like the people you dislike. It's very likely the fans that travel with their respective teams are not the same fans that bully visitors at home. All you would end up doing is giving us just as bad a name as those guys you don't like.

Couldn't agree more. I'd like to keep like it is.

Part of me wonders if that mentality is a result of success on the field. Sure we're generally a cordial bunch on Sundays but if we won a few Super Bowls (lol) would that signal a shift in fan behavior?

Much respect to anyone who goes to any away games. I really couldn't deal with it myself but credit to those of you brave people who put your lives on the line.

I've never been to Foxboro but lived in Boston for 3 years. You are exactly right with this statement. On more than one occasion I would be on the T going to work in the morning and a fistfight would damn near breakout if anyone was wearing Yankee gear.

I remember one specific instance during the moring commute a guy was wearing a yankee cap, then one guy said something to the guy in the yankee gear. The yankee fan just asked to be left alone, and before you knew it almost the whole train car was ganging up on this dude. Mind you these were not just youngsters or hoodlums, it was during the morning commute so it was mostly people in suits or just working class citizens doing the hazing. It was pretty damn ridiculous.

I did sport my Texans gear in Boston, but we sucked so bad when I lived there (2003-2006) I think they just felt sorry for me so I never got any attitude.

Actually the opposite is true. There is no more proof of that than in New York. The Giants fans are laid back and classy for the most part. The Jets fans are quite the opposite. The same goes for the Eagles.

Maybe with the Patriots they are still loser mentality fans because their franchise was a doormat for so long .. oh, and still is when the Giants are on the same field with them.

One of my alltime fave trips to enemy ground was Buffalo - I went to opening week the year after the MCM and wore my old Earl jersey.

I got a lot of hell, a LOT. In the stadium, we had great seats, and again, I got a lot of hell. It all stopped for the most part over the huge guy sitting next to us, a massive Bills fan wearing his Thurman Thomas jersey. He forced me into a hug, and said don't worry, stick with him. Then after the Bills took the lead, he forced me into another hug.

Then when the Titans tied the game, I rose up and screamed at him, "where's my hug now?" - he was a good sport too, and gave me one.

I am convinced the only reason I got out of there in one piece was because of that dude. He was 6-4, 250 easy.

I'm sure people won't be happy about this statement but in a way I think we could use more pride in the stands.

I am all about keeping it classy and keeping in mind it's just a game but it drives me crazy when the opposing teams fans are more passionate and getting into the game more than our own fans.

Did they ask you what you were doing rooting for a Tennessee team wearing an Earl Campbell jersey?

Tell you what, go ahead and be an ahole to them, and lose you season tickets while your at it. Every one was quick to say the Cowboys caused the situation in the lots. That coukd not be farther from the truth. If your an ahole you will pay the piper and Bobs piper eats season tickets.
