We're always talking about it, and many are still confounded by its use. So I decided to post on it. It seems to be just ONE BIG ALGORITHM

Bleh the playcalling didnt change from the first 12 games to the final four .... the only difference was the players on the field made more out of those same plays over the first 12.

Good find. Good read. Interesting to know that this scripted play strategy goes all the way back to Paul Brown and Bill Walsh.

It's certainly fun to joke about, but IMO Kubiak makes himself any easy target because for most his game management skills have always left something to be desired. While I realize other offensive minded coaches look at similar play charts coaches like Sean Payton seem to do so while managing the game better. And Kubiak's apparent inability to delegate the play calling task to a member of his staff also adds fuel to the 'he's really just a glorified coordinator in over his head' argument.

Personally I'd prefer a HC that is monitoring the ebb and flow of the game as opposed to one who seems to lack the mental ability to do so while having his nose in the playbook.

The problem I see after reading that article is that Kubiak never does any of the things that writing the menu beforehand is supposed to allow you to do. It mentions exploiting favorable match ups that you see in real time on game day...Kubiak ran right at Wilfork all night the last Pats game and we never seem to run fades to Andre etc. I could go on and on. It really does seem like he's not watching the game sometimes.

No, I guess he didn't. I just find it amazing that with all the different issues affecting this team, or any team for that matter, for some silly reason, the fricken playcalling is always at the top of the list, and it would matter if was Kubiak, Bellchick, or Harbaugh, or God himself.

Fans have no earthy clue about playcalling. And for those who say think they know more about playcalling than coaches do, they have no credibility with me. NONE!

I stand by what I said earlier. All this "Denny's Menu" bullsh!t is nothing but an lame attempt to mock.

I do hope more people would read it as it's very informative & would clear up a lot of misconceptions, such as being "strict" in following the script.

Calling the plays

To begin the game, West Coast coaches simply call the plays according to the script. They pay close attention to how the defense is responding to the script. Any time they find themselves in a special situation, say, "backed up" at their own 5 yard line, they would simply choose a play from the "backed up" section on their playcall sheet. Once they were out of that situation (say the play goes for 15 yards) they would resume the script.

Also, if you listen to the Gary Kubiak show, I can think of twice where he said he liked the way something was going & decided to veer from the script for a couple of plays. I think the last Indy game was one of them. He said the run game was working so well (Arian plus the line) he decided to add a couple of runs in that drive.

It seems like you're not watching the game.

This running right at Wilfork thing is crap. We didn't run at him, he was cutting through the line & getting to Foster regardless where we ran it. That was an OL problem.

And as far as exploiting weaknesses, again if we're seeing a favorable matchup on a safety/LB, it's going to look like OD having a big game one week, then Andre the next week, then Graham one week, or Casey one week. You're not going to see a big Halo around the guy saying, "We're attacking this guy" like you would on Madden.

Matt is pretty good about spreading the ball around, but when one guy is above the pack, it's not necessarily that guy stepping up. It's us taking advantage of something Kubiak/Dennison/Matt sees.

Pretty much. I remember the first mention of the Denny's menu with Kubiak. It was years ago when we were losing more than winning and the Fire Kubiak Club was all the rage. So yeah, it was brought to the forum in order to mock him. It was humorous at the time, simply because it was better to laugh than cry. But these days it's kinda' stale and a bit overused. Dude is winning playoff games as a head coach, yet there's always some reason to be unhappy about it, I guess.

Right now, he looks like he's lost in his own genius and is more concerned with using his pre-planned strategy rather than intensely watching the game and figuring out the flow of the game for his offense to then adjust on-the-fly and react to real life, not what he cooked up beforehand.

The Patriots ate crow and grabbed Josh McDaniels quicker than a screen pass against the Texans. Apparently they let their coordinators do what they do best, but for some reason it has always seemed (via watching Kubiak on the sideline and in Kubiak's own comments) that Gary thinks he knows better.

To what degree does he dabble in the play calling? Who knows. More than he should, that's my hunch. We got ballers on this team, no way should this offense face an entire month of bogging down like they have.

I'll let you know right now that Kubiak will never be Bill Walsh 2.0.

But, NOBODY will be the second coming of Bill Walsh. He was that special and there is a reason why he's become a benchmark for head coaches.

However, my point was that Kubiak's lineage comes from a tree that has grown many championship coaches. He's using a proven system that has been behind many NFL championships with different teams.

We can see incremental improvements with this team. Yeah, they screwed the pooch by missing out on HFA, just like they did...when? Oh yeah, never. Just having a chance at HFA was a first time for this franchise, and they still have to learn how to deal with success.

So-called "baby steps" can be frustrating for impatient fans (myself included), but there is definitely an upward curve to this franchise's history under Kubiak. Hopefully that trend doesn't stop until there's a shiny silver trophy involved.
