Unfortunately, if that were initially the only reason to have had a retractable roof, the construction of one that was broken up in segments with multiple cross bracings (rather than one long open expanse) would have been served the same purpose, for an enormous cost savings, and with less chance of weather damage such as seen during IKE.

Partial right about the grass.

Reliant has a retractable roof to satisfy the NFL at the time of trying to purchase an expansion team and to satisfy the Houston Rodeo, who was a partner in the stadium's project.

According to David Manica at HOK Sports (the people that designed the stadium):

Manica’s first challenge in designing what would become Reliant Stadium actually came back in the days when the NFL’s return to Houston was little more than a pipe dream.

In 1997, the stadium-to-be was a decidedly different project. For one thing, the roof was fixed, not retractable.

“That was the initial design,” he said. “But the tenant requirements between the football team and the rodeo were such that the rodeo would require the roof to be closed. They were not interested in being a part of an open-air facility.

“Houston was competing with Los Angeles at the time to get the team, and there is no doubt that the NFL prefers an open-air stadium with natural grass. So the best way to solve that problem was to design the new building here with an operable roof.”

Manica’s first drawings of a roof that would open and close began in the summer in 1997 and proceeded in fits and starts for the next two years as Texans owner-to-be Bob McNair wooed and eventually won the rights to the NFL’s 32nd franchise.

I really don't know why anyone cares if the roof is open. calling Reliant a retractable roof stadium is technically correct but lets face it, this building is far more a "sunroof" than a "convertible". When they open the roof this little bitty square of blue sky appears that really seems to serve no other purpose than to let the sun burn one side of the building to a cinder.

It's not even open enough to provide sufficient light to maintain that crap they call a field. That's why they spend so much time and energy moving pallets of grass out into the parking lot.

I'm not saying it's bad that we can open the sunroof or anything. I mean, I've owned cars with sunroofs before. They're kind of fun. I never really bother opening them as much as I did my convertible though. Didn't seem worth the trouble. Kind of describes Reliant's roof.

If anyone's interested, the team is 15-6 under coach Gary Kubiak with the roof open (1-0 in 2011; 0-0 in 2012) and 20-15 under Kubiak (4-3 in 2011; 6-2 in 2012) with the roof closed.
