Default Aussie Mock 2013 draft 1.0

Texans drafting around the 28-30

Round 1:
Tyler Eifert TE, Notre Dame
Personally i think we move the ball pretty well on offence (vikes game not with standing). Our main problem is in the red zone. Eifert has the best hands out of any WR/TE. We play a lot of double TE sets. BPA and fills a small need.

Round 2:
Sylvester Williams DT, North Carolina
Now some of you will be thinking how is williams going to fall this far.
His ranked as the 5-7 best DT in the class. Out of the last 2 drafts only 5 DTs have been taken in the first 2 rounds. My guess one of sylvester or jesse williams will fall to the end of the 2nd. We should take either, however i like sylvester more as a prospect. He penetrates the pocket extremely well, he lacks a little strength to hold against double teams or push the pocket, but with JJ and AS beside him i dont think its going to be a massive problem.
Plus once he gets into the NFL training will ramp up and he will find that strength.

Round 3:
Darius Slay, CB, Mississippi State
Harris is either finished or needs more time, for the moment he gets extra competition to light a fire under is a55.
Slay offers get size something we dont have in our secondary.
Badboy introduced me to this guy and i have been looking at him for a few days and i like what i see.

Round 3 Comp Pick:
Andrew Jackson ILB, Western Kentucky
Great blizter, excellent quickness and LOVES contact.
A few of the guys on this board really like him and thats why i started to watch and im impressed.

Round 4:
Xavier Nixon OT, Florida
For me our backup OT are terrible, harris hasn't played well and gardner hasnt seen any action.
Im happy with Newtons development but we need that swing tackle and also some to give competition.
Nixon has all the physical attributes and more but lacks consistency, so his time as back up should help him out a lot. Similar prospect when newton was coming out.

Round 5:
D.J. Swearinger, S, South Carolina
great open field tackler, isnt afraid to lay the big hit.
Decent in coverage as well.
I have always been a demps fan but his been letting me down lately.
Quin could be gone in FA but i do think he stays.
Keo is solely a special teamer.
Swearinger will sit behind manning and quin and hopefully will develop is game further.

Round 5 Comp pick:
Omoregie Uzzi G, Georgia Tech
Plenty of expiring contracts on the line this season.
I like Jones, Brookes and smith but if we lose depth, these guys need some competition. Uzzi should fit our zone-blocking scheme well with his size and quickness

Round 6:
Ryan Allen P, Louisiana Tech

Round 7:
Braden Wilson FB, Kansas State
Old school fullback...leech 2.0
Height: 6.4 Weight: 254lbs

Like your players, but any mock that has us taking an offensive weapon early is not going to be my cup if tea at this point.

Would like the TE pick, but I feel he'd be wasted in this offense. I think Grahm is very good....and he doesn't get a ton of looks...I think Casey could be a match up nightmare for defense...but he seems to be a last resort option....

I'd prefer a lineman there or a defensive player...jmo.

my thinking is we need another playmaker. GG is good but his not going to steal the spot light. Casey offers versatility out of the back field and thats it.
I like the guys we have but we need to get better

Don't want to have a big argument in your thread, but I'm just going to clarify. I think the player could probably be an upgrade, but o don't think it'd matter in this offense when we aren't fully utilizing the guys we already have. Give mr better o line or a defense that can keep giving the o the ball.

WHoa you have Slay in 3rd? Interesting as I can find nobody that even mocks him. lol I agree he has the skills but Brandon Harris is making my evaluations look pretty bad. I know you like Nixon but I would not touch him. I'd rather take my chances on Wagner. I also think Sylvester will be avail in second but with Jenkins and Irish Chocolate returning to school, I am concerned teams may push those left up in draft.

Eifert is going to be better than OD but just don't see Texans replacing OD next season and Graham is too good to spend a high pick this position. 5th round or later? Yep.

I don't see an OL dropping to us and Texans satisfied with WRs. Wade will stun me if he drafts a Nose in first. I think it will be an OLB as Barwin gone. If that (Barwin) happens, we will be in same spot we were last draft when we took Mercilus. Not sure there will be one of his worth there but Wade may thinks so.

Anyways, enjoyed the read.

nah dont worry about it mate, arguing makes life interesting lol.

as i said i think our offence moves the ball pretty well, obviously could be better but with the experience that newton, brooks and jones are getting this year i see great improvement for next year.
but what i cant see us improving is our red zone offence unless we bring someone in because its been pretty bad for a few years.
and eifert i think is the best receiver we can get at this point in the draft along with maybe being BPA.

no QB in this years draft will help us win SBs more then schuab atm, or even in FA.

yeah cant remember where i saw it but someone had him projected in the 4th i think. plus i think his measurables along with tape, he moves up some rounds, real sleeper.
CBs will always be picked earlier like safeties always later just because of their value.

on eifert see what i wrote above in response to Rey.

OLB could be a real option if barwin goes but i dont think it will happen, whether right or wrong im not sure but i dont think the FO will give up on barwin

What kind of contract will Barwin be seeking from other teams? This is probably last chance to set himself up & I'm thinking some team will focus on his 2011 season more than Ric Smith will.

im not sure of exact numbers but i dont think it will be that high that we wont re-sign him.

i have a few days off so im thinking of going back and watching all games and specifically looking at how barwin played.
Considering that kubiack says his been playing well but the rest of us dont quite see it...it should be interesting to go back and watch.

Let me know what you find but if it is much of anything before game 8 or so I'll be shocked. As you review remember OLBs in Wade's system is to get to QB.

JMO, don't kill the messenger.

1. Eifert, I like the player but with OD not going anywhere, and Graham getting better I think there are bigger needs in the 1st than an upgrade at a position of strength. I'd go NT here.
2. Williams, I think he goes late 1st or early 2nd and will be gone by the time we pick in the 2nd.
3. Slay, I think this is way to early for Slay, most likely in the 5th-7th.
3b. Jackson, this all depends on the type of ILB you want in our system. With teams blitzing their OLB's all the time the 3-4 has become a 5-2 system and ILB's are now required to play sideline to sideline and cover the TE or RB. Jackson is an old school ILB thumper to play the run in the middle but I'd prefer an athletic ILB prospect like Kiko Alonso. It all depends on what you want.
4. Nixon, I like this pick and player though it might take a little luck for him to fall this far, I see him as a late 3rd. Good pick and quality depth with lots of potential.
5. Swearinger, I don't know much about him only what I've read. This is probably about the right spot for him and we could use some Safety depth/competition.
5b. Uzzi, this guys undersized though he screams ZBS OG, I just wonder what adding 20 lbs. would do to his athleticism. Good place to pick some OG depth, though I'd prefer someone a little bigger.
6. Allen, love this pick. Field position is so important and an upgrade at P would be nice and save us some money.
7. Wilson, I've never seen this guy play but he seems to tall for FB where a blocker needs to get low to gain leverage. I'd take J.C. Copeland here, the guys a tank and a true Leach 2.0.

pretty much spot on with exception of Sylvester going in first/early 2nd, just think we are starting to get carried away with overvaluing position based on need but otherwise

JMO but I agree with Beerlover your evaluations seem much more on target with your increased research into players. While reviewing other sites I have seen your questions, comments and fact checking. Good work! Also, agree with BL on S. Williams who has actually fallen some on boards. His stats and biographicals are very close to Brandon Williams but I have watched a lot of the first and none of second.

3. Slay, I think this is way to early for Slay, most likely in the 5th-7th.

my retort:
With eifert im going BPA, yes i know its not quite a position of need but in my opinion he would greatly improve this offence so thats why i have selected him. See what NE is doing with 2 top TEs as an example of what could be achieved.
The colts will have a dual threat TE combo in a few years that will be really great.
GG is good but Eifert is better, blocking, catching route running you name it.
The value of 2 top TE's in this offence is incredible.

with slay, walter has him projected to go between the 3-4th while cbssports has him going in the 4-5th. So for him to go at the end of the 3rd i think wouldnt be a stretch. CBs always go earlier then projected because of the importance they have.

On williams see my reasoning above and also see what beerlover and badboy have mentioned.

Jackson yeah his a thumper but that doesnt mean his not athletic enough to go from side to side. remember he will be off the field on passing downs so he'll be mostly used to play the run. plus i think his the better playmaker.

finally on wilson watch him block for kansas state, trust me leverage will not be a problem. when i said leech 2.0 I'm not meaning a clone of leech but more the productivity wilson will bring to the texans.

But thats why i went with Eifert in the 1st. BPA will always make your team better.

Agree. Eifert would be a tremendous addition to the Texans. Short could also become Pro-Bowl Nose Tackle playing next to JJ Watt in Wade Phillips 3-4. To me at least there is a bigger talent gap between Cody to Short than Owen to Eifert. Hence a bigger impact even though I too have Eifert rated ahead of Short as BPA. I think where we get mixed up is the Texan Big Board weights prospects based on their own dynamics. This would include free agent decisions, salary cap, future make-up & quality of depth @ each position. Or maybe this is becoming too personal? When Houston was awarded the franchise & announces Capers would be head coach & run the 3-4 I've been wanting an elite NT. 2004 week before the draft my final pick for the Texans was Vince Wilfork. Still waiting & I'm not getting any younger, neither is Mr. McNair

Did anyone have him earlier then me

Patting myself on the back
