A stat that caught my eye is that in the last 3 games, we rank last in penalties per game with 9.
![]() I wonder how many of those penalties have come from STs........seems like guarantee of several each and every game. |

That has been bothering me too. Way too many penalties.
The stupid special team penalties are part of the problem, but we did a lot of shooting ourselves in the foot with others also. We need to clean that stuff up. And there is no excuse for the block in the back on ST penalties, these guys have all been playing football way too long for that crap.

One of the graphics from Sunday's game said that the Texans have the most special teams penalties of any team in the NFL. I knew I wasn't imagining stuff.

I noticed this in the Indy game and going into the playoffs this is something we'll have to clean up. I'd hate for our Super Bowl aspirations to die on a penalty.

One of the things that derailed the Texans early in the game on Sunday was that on Indy's second possession (after the Texans had taken a 10-0 lead), they had a 31 yard drive that took the ball from their 20 to the Texans 49. 25 of those yards came from 3 Texans defensive penalties, while the remainder of the drive netted 6 yards. Their punt netted 37 yards and put us on our 12 yard line to start the next drive.
6 net yards from scrimmage, yet they managed to flip field postion which pretty much stayed flipped up until Indy's first FG. (We had two series of 3 and outs that resulted in Indy starting drives at our 38, and our 34. The first of those drives ended in the fumble on the 1 yard line, the second in a FG. FYI, the Texan Penalties broke out as follows: Defense - 7 penalties - 49 yards Offense - 1 penalty - 10 yards (statistically 10, in actuality, 37 yards and a TD) S. Teams - 1 penalty - 10 yards Total - 9 penalties 69 yards. We got lucky that Indy actually had 10 more yards in penalties than we did - including at least one personal foul to extend a drive.

I pretty much overlook the Indy game penalty stats because of the Jeff Triplette crew working the game. I seriously weep every time I see that this jackass and his crew are working a game. They always call so many penelties, on both teams, that there is never any flow to the game. Triplette gets more camera time than any of the players.
You could seriously call a penalty on every play in an NFL game if you wanted to, but the really quality refs only call the stuff that actually has an effect on the outcome of the play. Sorry, just had to get the Triplette anger off my chest |

Does anyone know what the unsportsman like conduct on their coach was?

Over the last 5 weeks a lot of potential TD drives have been killed with holding or false start penalties.

Plus one offside on Antonio that was offsetting by a holding call. On offense, there was a holding call on Wade Smith and a False Start on Graham (he moved ever so slightly before the snap, I had to rewatch several times from the endzone view to catch it.) On ST, Clutts got called for holding when the rusher beat him to the inside. Carmichael was called for holding on a return (this one is ticky-tacky). On defense, I don't like the call on KJax for that hit. He got Wayne in the chest with his shoulder; and there was no way of him knowing the ball is off-target; he definitely couldn't stop himself. I don't like the call on Dobbins either. I guess they can call it, even though it was right close to the 5-yd limit, he probably pushed the guy too hard. The call on Harris could have gone either way. Wayne initiated the contact and then swiped Harris away with his hand on the helmet; but the guy that retaliates gets called every time. I don't know if Harris can afford to let the receiver get by him. Tough call , but I can't really fault Harris there. It was probably best to take the penalty there rather than risking a score. |

The call on Watt is correct for a hand in the face.
Antonio clearly jumped one play. He was called for lining up in the neutral zone on another play, but I think it was Mercilus. He reset his hands twice, each time inching forward a little bit. |

Did you look at that hold?
I know there are holds on every play that don't get called. But that one was legit. Not only was that one legit, the one Duane Brown committed on that same play was legit as well. His initial block was great, he advanced to the second level, then put a LB in a headlock. If you recall, I've slammed Wade Smith pretty good. For that one, & a few other things he had done. However, after watching the game again, he had his bright spots as well. So I must redact my original comments towards Wade Smith. & if he's hurt, like you suggested, then yeah... he's a warrior.

Regarding the ST penalties, particularly on returns and especially with our KO returns, it seems to me we would be better off having KM just run straight forward and hit the ground before taking a hit, not trying to go around any defender. This is if he is going to run at all, of course, because we do best when we just get the ball at the 20. The idea here is to eliminate blocks in the back (BIB) that happen on every freakin' KO return and a lot of punt returns. The penalties are killing us. Everytime KM runs around a few people to get 10 yards, we go back to about that spot and then another 10 yards (or whatever the penalty amount is). Let's face it, our ST blockers are HORRIBLE and the league is nailing everybody with BIB constantly anyway. In one of our last two games, the last one I think, one announcer said there had been a penalty on every return up to that point in the game, which I think was middle 3rd Qtr. It ain't workin'...
