Texans Take a QB in the 1st Round?

So...let's play "what if". Assuming the Texans end up with one of the bottom 3-4 picks in the draft: If a "top" QB like Barkley drops unexpectedly like Aaron Rodgers did, should the Texans take him to groom for the future?

I like Matt Schaub so this isn't Matt Schaub hate. Rodgers backed up Favre for 3 years. Schaub will be 34 three years from now. Is it too early?

I think it is one year too early to take a QB with a high draft pick, but if we were to do it this year, I would target Tyler Wilson. He's not ready to start in the NFL, and won't be for a couple years, but I think he could do really well in the long term. He has great arm strength, good footwork, and above average accuracy. I could see a team in the 10-25 range taking him as a project for the future. I don't know how high he will go, and he could fall to the 2nd round, but I'd like him for the cost and potential reward.

I am going to say no especially as no QB in this draft excites me. I was big fan of Geno Smith but I think we are solid with what we have. I would not be shocked if Texans draft QB day three. We have too many needs versus QB.

This & it depends on what Kubiak thinks of Yates & Keenum. I know they aren't of "starting NFL Pedigree" but you never know.

I also wouldn't compare this situation to GreenBays, they had a H.O.F.er starting ahead of them. If they knew he was going to play 2 maybe three years, they never would have drafted Rogers.

Even if something were to happen to Schaub next year, I think Kubiak can win with this team & his choice of Yates & Keenum. Giving us time to go up & get a QB & not panic and get a Locker/Gabbert just because we "have to have" a QB.

Only major injury would dictate a move like this in 2013 or if a Barkley drops in Kubiaks lap.

If the Texans truly believe Barkley's capable of being a top 5 NFL QB, then they should do it. It would be along the lines of what the Packers did with Aaron Rodgers.

However, from everything I've heard, I don't think Barkley's that guy, and I'd be kind of disappointed if it shook out like that.

I'm pretty sure Kubes is going to wait 3 years club a few key players in the kneecaps, take a page out of the 2011 Colts playbook and tank. Once all is said and done he gets his Aggie - Manziel

I ask myself the same question about the RB position if the kid from Stanford or Wisconsin are available. With Ben Tate not showing any endurance and with all the good first round worthy MLBs gone by then, it might not be a bad idea.

I'm not a fan of Schaub. Yeah, I know, go ahead and throw tomatoes now. Whatever. I don't hate the guy and I'm not calling for his head. He's not a scrub, and he's good enough to win with. Therefore, he's good enough to pick and choose what QB you draft to succeed him. But I would love for them to get a guy late in the first round that represents value, a la Rodgers, and groom him for a couple years. I'd really like someone mobile with a big arm, similar to Cutler, but perhaps with a bit better mental makeup.

So while I'm asking for everything, can I please have a Lombardi trophy too?

I think the Texans are in the perfect situation to hang loose and yes in their judgment use a 1st or 2nd round pick in the next 1-3 years and then pull a Green Bay and groom someone.

Schaub is effectively only signed through next season. The remaining seasons on his contract carry $1 mil per game roster bonuses. He will either restructure again or be gone.

Yep, that is why I was so excited with his contract. '13 draft should set Texans up to go BPA after.

What would you guys think of taking Mike Glennon-QB from NC State in the 2nd round? I know he's currently listed as a 3rd round prospect but since QB is a premium position and we most likely will be picking at the very end of each round we'd have to take him in the 2nd. He's got the size teams drool over as well as good arm strength. NFLDraftScout says he needs to work on his upper and lower body mechanics but a couple years under Kubiak should do the trick. I don't know how mobile he is but it sounds like he's to the basics of the game and potential to be a good QB in the future.

Do you project this guy to be a starter? Projected as a third rounder doesn't scream "STARTER", In what ways is he a better prospect than Yates?

I don't see that his stats justify a 2nd round pick. OL, WR, or OLB would probably be a better option in the second round.

No offense, but stat watching is a terrible way to scout players.

Nevertheless, I agree with your conclusion. He has a great arm and prototypical size, but he has sloppy footwork and has never "put it all together" on the field. He has starter potential, but he is a couple years away.

Furthermore, depending on the underclassmen that declare, he could be ranked as low as 12 (by my rankings) or 10 (NFLDRAFTSCOUT). Granted, these rankings are fluid, and will change by the time the draft rolls around, but even if you bump him up 2-4 spots, it still has him ranked between 6-8. Last year, 5 QBs were drafted in the 2nd- Luck, RG3, Tannehill, Weedon, Osweiler. Another two (Wilson, Foles) were drafted in the 3rd.

Yes, I'd agree with you there. Stats don't tell the whole story, but since I have no video of him playing, it's what I based my conclusions off of.

Either way, I really don't see us going QB in this draft. Weak class as compared to last year and I'm afraid to touch Barkley, who I think may fall enough, with a 10 foot pole.

As an ACC fan the one game that specifically stands out to me showing he is no where near ready was against UVa. Their defense isn't overly strong, and their secondary is extremely young. He threw 3 picks against them, and had an overall terrible day. I can only imagine as an NC State fan it was extremely painful to watch.
