At least that's the way I want to remember it.
The Cowboys were notorious for having some rather 'colorful' players, both during the Landry era and the Jimmy Johnson era.

Heck, just the white house alone should tell you something:

Quote:
Infamous Cowboys White House still stands

“The house … was rented under the name of receiver Alvin Harper and the new neighbors in an exclusively white, low-key community were 6-foot-5 inch, 300 pound African American men escorting an endless conveyor belt of large-breasted blondes. Nate Newton insists the White House was a haven for neither prostitution (“What did we need a prostitute for? Women laid down for us”) nor drugs (Never saw ‘em), yet his take is disputed by myriad teammates and people in the know.”

When the house and its tenants’ purpose became public just after the apex of the Cowboys’ Super Bowl runs, this screamed of a team out of control. A television station’s hidden camera caught star receiver Michael Irvin with what appeared to be cocaine. Wrapped around were a string of other arrests and other publicly embarrassing situations that made it football’s most interesting franchise back then.

Full story

I'll be honest with ya', I'm so starved for a championship as a Houston pro football fan for life that I feel the same way many times.

Championships gloss over the dirt, if you know what I mean.

I'm not saying that the so-called "Houston Texan-worthy" way will not net a championship, but excluding players based on character flaws does limit the talent that you can get in the long run. That's just being pragmatic.
I honestly believe that the signing (and retention) of Braman shows the Texans aren't completely close-minded to "character flaws". It's just a guess, but I'm thinking that if we knew more than we know, Braman would be far from the only example.

I think the Texans take the approach that if they can get comfortable that the problems/character flaws exhibited in the past won't pose a problem down the road, they're willing to sign the player, but they've got to be at that point before they bring someone in. You can argue with the execution of that line of thinking all day, but it's tough to argue with the underlying premise.

Also, I think there's a component of the "every time someone you've heard of gets cut - someone starts clamoring for the Texans to sign him" syndrome. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, and sometime the Texans don't sign someone because they simply believe he doesn't offer much.

Edit: all that said, I'm guessing there aren't too many fans of the LT led World Champion New York Giants who feel that those Super Bowl trophies are tarnished one bit by any of his off the field actions.

I just realized how young I was when I kept thinking Ladainian Tomlinson never played for the Giants. It took a while before it hit me that you were talking about Lawrence Taylor.

Lions' Gunther Cunningham defends Ndamukong Suh, rips Matt Schaub's comments

Quote:
“What is a Texan, anyhow?” Cunningham scoffed, before he lit into Schaub.

“You never make derogatory statements about another player and another team,” Cunningham said. “If you say that, then say it behind closed doors and keep it that way. But you don’t come out in the paper and start saying things like that.

“And, you know, I’m sure Matt’s a great guy and he got caught up in the emotions. And I’ll forgive him for it — this time.”
Well, Gummter, a Texan is what you just lost to, fool.

This is by far the most bizarre inflammatory statement I've ever heard from Schaub. And it wasn't even that bad. It's just so weird hearing it from Schaub.

Schaub has got to be the most ridiculously professional/composed QB I've ever seen. The guy NEVER loses his head,no matter what. He's like a walking talking press release. I'm really thankful that it's guys like Schaub and Andre who the young Texans have to look up to.

I'd rather have the Texans Way even if we never get a Super Bowl. The team is a natural extension of my personality, otherwise I wouldn't be rooting for them. Interesting how personalities of people and the teams they root for end up resembling one another over the years.

There is no joy in celebrating a Super Bowl win if the team you root for is filled with pieces of ****. At least for me.

Keep in mind how many times Schaub has been injured because of "dirty" plays..... he may be fed up & felt like saying something this time.

Well, I am pretty sure we're going to be scheduled to play the Lions again next year after all the fireworks over this issue.

1. Thanksgiving Day game that went into OT (i.e. Not The Typical Blowout)

2. "The Kick Heard 'Round The World" by Suh.

3. Forsett's TD that wasn't a TD but remained a TD

4. Schaub's comments to the media the week after

5. And now the Lions' d-coord trying to discredit Schaub AND the Texans

Yeah, I'd say the networks will be prodding the league office to book Texans-Lions next year. I think a MNF game or SNF or Thursday Night game. Something they can really use to talk up the rematch.

I warned you guys about the media going all... "Ooooh, did you hear what Schaub said about you?"

The media is the real issue here. Like a bunch of kids instigating a fight in the school yard.
