Texans sign LB Cameron Collins to practice squad

The Texans made a practice squad move on Tuesday, releasing running back Davin Meggett and signing linebacker Cameron Collins.

Collins (6-2, 241), an undrafted rookie from Oregon State, was previously on the Texans’ practice squad from Oct. 11-29. He gives the Texans a developmental player for insurance at a position that has been beset by injuries.

Texans outside linebacker Brooks Reed is out for several weeks with a groin injury. Inside linebacker Bradie James may not be available this Sunday because of a hamstring injury. Inside linebacker Tim Dobbins missed the last game with a shoulder injury but is expected to return this week. Inside linebacker Darryl Sharpton is only two games removed from the Physically Unable to Perform list.

Meggett (5-8, 215), an undrafted rookie from Maryland, spent all offseason with the Texans before being released in the preseason. He was re-signed to the practice squad on Sept. 26 after the New York Jets signed Jonathan Grimes away from the Texans. The Texans re-acquired Grimes off waivers on Oct. 31, and running back Ben Tate is expected to return this week from a hamstring injury suffered in Week 7.

Biography: Two-year starter used at both linebacker and safety. Senior totals included 55 tackles and 4 tackles for loss after he had 39 tackles and four tackles for loss as a junior. Posted a career-best 70 tackles as a sophomore. Never recorded an interception in college. All-academic performer four straight years.

Positives: Athletic defender with an undeveloped game. Breaks down well, effectively uses his hands to protect himself and does a solid job diagnosing the action. Gets depth on pass drops, moves around the field well and fluid out to the sidelines.

Negatives: Inefficient, takes too many steps getting to plays and overpursues the action. Possesses more of a short-area burst that he cannot sustain. Marginal skills in coverage.

Analysis: Collins looks the part and showed flashes of dominance as a sophomore yet never took his game to the next level. He's a size/speed prospect who must start to transfer his athletic skills onto the football field on a full-time basis.

Not sure where this guy fits in our defense.

Doesn't seem to fit the OLB model you would expect.

Yep, it just says that with Tate back (apparently), and thus four available RB's on the 53 man roster, there's more possibility that emergency would require a LB than an RB. I'm also thinking that if/when there is the need to add someone to the 53 man roster, Jonathan Grimes is the guy who will provide the room.

Remembering that he was used by the Beavers as a hybrid OLB/SS, they may be thinking of him at the SAM or even the SS position.

Perhaps as a dime package guy, Wade likes to bring a safety down as a LBer but Quin just can't handle the beating when they run a draw play right at him.
