I just think of something and that is the fact we've been neglecting one aspect of the game: Penalties.
A defensive PI resulted in a penalty that when we accepted, it counts as no play. But, it still is a passing play; sometimes a defensive holding is called, sometimes a PI is called. A roughing the passer is also a no-play, it's not in the book as a pass play, but the offensive team gets to advance the ball 15 yards. Offensive holding or offensive PI are also no plays. If the offense is already in passing mode, this should not change the dynamic of play-calling. Only when a holding penalty or a false start is called on a run play that it may affect what's going to be called on the next play. We can still run the ball on the next play, that's for sure. Overall, it pretty much balanced out. Still, I figure I'd mention it. And now, here's the update on the Texans run/pass distribution in the first half of the 6 games we've played so far. I continue not to count the penalties I just mentioned. Week 1: 13 run plays, 22 pass plays Week 2: 19/24 Week 3: 14/18 Week 4: 16/17 Week 5: 13/20 Week 6: 14/17 Total 89/118 (43% run 57% pass). We're still doing pretty much the same thing we did last year. In one game, we may start out passing a bit more; in another, we may start out running the ball a bit more. We don't give the opponent a clear clue to hang their hat on. |
