I've been seeing quite a few posts talking about how the Packers "gashed" us in the running game or something to that extent due to Quin playing as the X-backer in our nickle package.

But that is not true.

First off, the Packers RBs only average some 2.83 ypc on 29 carries (I believe.)

Secondly, a couple of long runs (10 and 7 yards) were not to Quin's side.

A third run (for 10) was to Quin's side, but he took on the O-lineman quickly for Manning to come up; however Manning was outside the box and couldn't get up there quick enough, and then the RB use his momentum to drag Manning for some 4 extra yards.

Against the opponents' 11 personnel (1 RB, 1 TE) or 10 personnel (1 RB, no TE), the Texans would be in their nickel or dime package depending on down and distance.

What the Packs did were very consistent; from their 11 personnel, they ran every time we had 6 men in the box, ie. both of our deep safeties played back.
This way, they have a head on each defensive head that we had (5 O-lineman and the TE).
(Let me rephrase this, every of their running plays from 11 personnel was with the Texans having 6 men in the box.)

There was one play in the first half when they went to a 12 personnel; we adjusted by going with our base defense.

Sometimes mid to late in the third quarter, they started going more with their 21 personnel (2 RBs, 1 TE); we countered accordingly.

It's the way we've been playing since Wade came on board.

Like Rey said, we've been using Quin the same way last year.
He's in the box to take care of the TE most of the times.
Sometimes, we would send him on a blitz or run blitz and let the OLB cover the TE.

Did anyone else notice LB Mercilus played at NT a few plays.

Thanks for looking into this more deeply. Chris Collinsworth is the one that made a big deal out of the Packers able to run when GQ is playing at the LB spot. He made it sound like we were getting gashed for doing so.

I just saw that on one play in the third quarter at 10:14 on 2nd and 20.

I heard his comment, too.

It's a fair question for people to pose.

But it's quite similar to a situation where, let's say a defense play cover 2 against our 21 personnel.

They put 2 CBs and 2 safeties do defend the pass, and therefore has only 7 in the box against our 7 blockers (5 O-linemen, a TE, and a FB).

Somebody has to defeat a block to make play because the safeties are too far away to come down in time.

With a guy like Quin, we exchange beef with quickness; that's all.
And he did defeat a few blocks out there.
