Coleman quick study at safety
The preseason will provide a better test, but if the first two weeks of training camp are any indication, the Texans should have no worries about veteran cornerback Marcus Coleman's switch to free safety.

Coleman is making an almost
seamless
transition to a position that is as mentally demanding as any on the field because he is required to make all the calls in the secondary.

Coleman has done a good job of putting himself and his teammates in the right spots, and athleticism
has allowed him to make
the move look pretty easy at times.

It's not a reach to say Coleman will be one of the best athletes in the league at his position.

The fact the Texans moved Coleman to free safety had more to do with upgrading the entire secondary than it did with his ability to continue playing cornerback.

He still runs and covers well, and his ball skills always have been a strength.

With more opportunities to make plays on balls in front of him, don't be surprised if Coleman excels at free safety and adds several years to his career.

I wasn't too worried about it really. I had a feeling it would be a pretty easy switch for him. Last night I saw some of his highlights from 2003, and I had totally forgot about the awesome plays he made last year.

What is he, 6-3??? In todays game, where there are 6-3 and 220 ibs WRs, he is built like the prototypical corner but is lacking the speed. However, FS is a great position for him.

Teams will look for a guy with some size on the corner (if he has the skill of course). Guys his size rarely have the backpeddle skills and the hips enough to turn and run as quickly as one would like out of a cornerback. He is more the abberation than the norm as a corner I think. Teams have been looking for larger corners for a while now and the better corners are still the shorter, quicker guys instead of the guys who match the physical size of the taller WR's.

well in case ya'll didn't know he's played safty before...he was a FS at texas tech for four years so it's not like he had to learn a new position...he just had to have a reminder course that's all...same with pitts and LG...if ya'll were worried about those transitions you have overlooked some other transitions that will mean more to this season...those being our two rookie starters going from college to pro...personally i've been more intrigued with those transitions...i have all the confidence in the world in pitts and coleman

Pitts has never played Guard in his life. He was a Tackle in College also. This is his first exposure to the position.
