Ex-Jets coach Eric Mangini told Rich Cimini of ESPN New York the team went hard after Schaub in 2006, when he was a young backup quarterback with the Atlanta Falcons.

"We tried like hell to get him," Mangini said this week.

Mangini and general manager Mike Tannenbaum were offering defensive end John Abraham to Atlanta straight-up for Schaub, whose two starts behind Michael Vick had enticed the Jets. The talks for Schaub fell apart, but the Jets ended up shipping Abraham to Atlanta for the 29th pick in the 2006 draft. Mangini and Co. used that to select center Nick Mangold, but only after trying to trade the pick to the San Diego Chargers for running back Michael Turner.

I love looking back at stuff like this:

1. The Jets offered John Abraham to Atlanta for Schaub, and they said no.

2. Then Schaub gets traded to Houston for 2 2nd round picks and a flip of pick #1.

3. Then Abraham gets traded to Atlanta anyways for a 1st round pick.

With the #8 pick in the 2007 draft the Falcons chose jamaal anderson (bust)
With the #9 pick the Dolphins chose Ted Ginn. It was reported we were interested in him
With the #10 pick we chose Amobi Okoye (bust)

Atlanta felt that the 1st rounder flip and 2 2nds was better than pick #29. Pick #29 was used to select Nick Mangold

The 2nd rounder in 07 was used to pick Justin Blalock. Now a starter at G for the Falcons
The 2nd rounder in 08 was traded around a bit. But the players who went around that slot (+/- 2 positions) were jermone simpson, trevor law, fred davis, desean jackson, and calais campbell.

With our next picks we chose Molden and Slaton. Other RBs that were around our pick in the 2nd were Forte and Ray Rice.

I understand why they required 2 2nds for Schaub. A 1st was offered

For the record, Okoye started all but 2 of the games he played in, the first four years of his career.

He may not have reached the levels we hoped he would reach, but he had too much of a career for me to call him a bust.

"Bust" is difficult term to define. Underachiever is unquestionably an apt description. Okoye started because of draft position and the fact that the Texans had no one to replace him.

Actually, it might have mattered.

Heard a radio interview with Rick Smith a few weeks ago and he was addressing a question about the importance of quarterbacks in this league. He talked about the process of getting Schaub and how they preferred that over their other options at the time.

One of those "other" options? They were considering Brady Quinn through the draft.

Brady Quinn. Ok, so the Texans grab Brady Quinn and Kubiak goes to work on him. Does anyone here think that our results with Quinn might have been better than what Cleveland was able to do with him?

I'm a firm believer that some coaches just have no feel for developing players. Now granted some players will not (or cannot) develop no matter how hard you try (Carr being the obvious example) but I would imagine that if the Texans had decided to pursue Quinn back then it would have been following some serious research and a few interviews. Basically I think in order for Gary to green light that pick he'd have had to been convinced that Quinn could be developed.

Who knows what would have happened.

most definitely, he would've developed quite a bit further with kubiak and the texans, though how well he would've fit into the offense is impossible to guess. quinn has been in some bad situations and never really got much of a chance to succeed. he may have been pretty good with us, even carr and sage could look decent to good as starters here, and quinn is better. i dont see him being as effective as schaub though - a more accurate, quicker thinking quarterback - so we definitely got the better end of that deal.

Everybody and their grandmother was after Schaub. It's why Kubiak, after meeting him, hurried up and had a contract drawn. The story I've always heard was that they met on a Saturday, played golf, and we signed him within a day or so.

It's why I used to laugh when people used to say, "The Texans have never signed a big free agent!" (Pre-Jon Joseph and Daniel Manning).

He wasn't a free agent. We traded for him

You read to much into what my tired delirious drinking self was saying.

Obviously it matters, as we could have done MUCH worse than Schaub, what I was saying is with who held the position before him, I would have gotten behind and supported a cactus at QB.

It is ridiculous to consider him anything other than a bust. Just because he started for us for 4 years doesnt mean crap. He started for four years...on the worst defense in history...

The only reason he started for us was because we literally did not have a better option to replace him.

They guy was/is a bust by all accounts as he did not even scratch the value of a #10 overall pick.

Still, he was a "big move." Fans have complained for years that we've never made any big offseason moves. I consider Schaub to be one.

Exactly. You could have made your picks using one of those NFL Draft magazines and done no other research whatsoever and managed to get one of those guys over Okoye. He was an incredibly risky pick and the Texans were not in a position to be able to throw 1's around carelessly trying to hit the jackpot at that point. If David Carr didn't exist Okoye would be the worst Texans first round pick in their history.
