Default 1/4 Season 2013 Mock...

My newest picks for next year.

1. Kawaan Short-DT/NT, I like the size, ability to stuff the middle run, and stand up to the double teams. I'd have no problem with BB's pick of Jesse Williams-DT here either.
2. Dallas Thomas-OT, Tennessee has moved him from LT to LG this year but I think he has the athleticism to play RT and I don't have the confidence that BB has in Newton. I think Newton will be a very good swing OT for us much like Butler was but I don't think he's the answer to RT long term and Harris is a patchwork.
3. Jordan Poyer-CB, the more I look at next years CB class the less I like it. Many of them will be future Safeties in the NFL instead of CB's. I think Poyer adds some good depth after McCain leaves in FA and Harris moves up to Nickle.
3b. Quinton Patton-WR, I like this guys ability to catch with his hands, run routes, and ability to go over the middle/not afraid to play physical, decent speed as well. Despite what Jean, and Martin can do we need extra talent at the position and I've got no confidence in Posey at all. I also think Walter is a possible salary cap cut, hope not though.
4. Micah Hyde-CB/S, he's stiff for a CB and his future in the NFL is at Safety, for that reason I think he falls a little.
5. Jonathan Bostic-ILB, DT in the 1st lessens the need for an early ILB. I like Bostic's size, speed, and productivity. He adds depth to the position along with special teams.
5b. Blaze Foltz-OG, we've got Brooks and Jones already and I think Brooks in the starter at RG in 2013 so we only need some added depth at OG. I could also go for Braden Hansen-OG here as well.
6. Quinn Sharp-P, Jones is old for the NFL and a better P to hold the position for the next 10+ yrs. would be nice at a time when field position is so important. Sharp is also a Kicker so we'd have an extra K on the roster in cases of injury.
7. Erik Highsmith-WR, great size for the position and added depth to push our young corp. of WR's. I've read that he has a great work ethic as well.

1) I am a huge fan of Short. Sign me up, and dont think twice.

2) Going OT is a good call here, IMO. Newton has not looked bad, but it is another one of those positions where we could use an upgrade and depth. I dont know a ton about Thomas, but he seems like a good pick here.

3) I dont know a lot about Poyer. CB is always a solid pick though.

3) I really like Patton. Great pick.

4) I like Hyde as well. You may be underselling him at CB, but I could definitely see him being a starting caliber FS in the NFL.

5) I am not wild about Bostic. I just dont see an NFL player when I focus on him. ILB is a need though.

5) I dont know enough about Foltz, but oline depth is always good.

6) Punter? Why not.

7) I have not been impressed with Highsmith this year. Furthermore, we have a ton of you WRs, so I think grabbing just one (and a good one at that in Patton) will be enough. I would look for a pass rushing specialist, fullback, tight end or quarterback. Those seem, to me at least, positions where a rookie can slide onto the roster. WR just seems too stacked with young talent.

Nice work, I would be a happy camper.

I don't see the need to take two db's that high. I'd much rather have an ilb instead of one of those db's.

I also don't see the need to go wr that high either.

When all of the wr's we have are healthy we can't even dress them all.

I think a pass rushing Olb is a need.

I'd like to see ilb, Olb, NT addressed in the first four rounds with OT or db if there is a guy that they really like.

Short being of Purdue fame may have inside track with RS alum in charge. Run stopper with explosiveness, good work ethic who can collapse the pocket.

Dallas Thomas, addressing OT depth would be a solid choice. I would prefer Wisconsin OT Ricky Wagner especially for RT because of his size & core strength.

Jordan Poyer, how did you come up with him? excellent choice, Beavers led the nation with one of the best defenses & Poyer is just one of many studs. This is a really adept pick, even though DB is not this high of need IMO.

Finally address WR. Is it just me but are Texans that stacked @ WR? Andre has a couple or maybe three years until his Hall of Fame career is complete. Lestar Jean has played in 3 games over two years? Walter is not a weapon & also getting up there. K-mart has more drops than catches. Posey so far has been the invisible man. I see addressing WR with a legitimate playmaker critical & this year unlike last year use at least the 2nd pick on someone who can start make immediate impact. Patton reminds me a little of Brian Quick who I liked but went a lot higher #33 to St. Louis. Not worth that but if he was available this late hell yeah.

Second one to take Hyde. Love the Iowa program, tenacious player I see him as SS going forward, give Quin back-up.

Texans need to solidify ILB position. Cushing was a DE then a SAM before winding up @ ILB so we need to broaden our search. I'm intriqued with BB pick (Andrew Jackson Western Kentucky 6'1" 265) that's thinking outside the box.

Like the name Blaze. OL is always an option. If he is there this late another hell yeah!

I hear you with taking a punter, even though Donnie Jones has been excellent. I don't see Texans drafting a punter until his production drops.

We do have a ton of WR's which is exactly why taking an elite one early is so important. This late could be any position. Last year they took Mondek then cut him loose, didn't even sign him to the practice squad even though there are depth concerns @ position. Last couple years 7th rd. pick has meant diddly doo, so I would recommend using it earlier in the draft to move up a few spots in the 3rd or 4th to grab a Poyer or Patton

Thanks for the review guys, good constructive criticism. Although I disagree that a pass rushing OLB is a need, we're deep at OLB.

*Short or Jesse Williams just make so much sense for our system. I think both would work equally well here.
*I like Wagner as well but like BB pointed out to me he seems a little slow for NFL OT. I think he'd be a stud at OG for us but he'd be like Winston at RT, great in run blocking but has trouble with the outside speed rushers.
*I just watched a bunch of videos looking for basic CB skills and athleticism/fluidity. I looked at Johnny Adams, Micah Hyde, Logan Ryan, Jordan Poyer, and Terry Hawthorne. I really like Hawthorne but there's no way he's still available in the 3rd, looks to be an early 2nd to me. Hyde and Ryan both look like future Safeties, and Adams is ehhhh nothing special. Of course everything will change between now and April, some will move up and some down.
*I see Hyde as depth behind Quin as well and our Safety depth needs alot of work. Hyde only falls to the 4th because of a change of positions transferring to the NFL.
*I'd like to solidify ILB as well but how early of a pick do we spend on a 2 down rotational player? Also the need for ILB will be lessened with a better DT/NT in the middle. I like Jackson as well.
*I like Blaze size, strength, and experience at the position.
*I'm just thinking we solidify the P position for the next 10-12 yrs. so that we can quit buying these relatively expensive aged FA every year. We can save some money here, and have a backup K as well.
*I thought of an extra WR here for competition purposes. I could also go for a FB to solidify the position as well, maybe Zach Boren-FB from Ohio St. Most 7th round picks don't make their respective teams rosters as long as the roster has good talent already. I'm thinking the extra competition will be good because I like Martin but Jean hasn't shown me anything to go wow about and Posey is a mistake that will take Kubiak years to admit to. Even if Posey works out I think he tops out as a #3 or #4 WR, nothing special.

How can we be sure that Barwin will resign?
I like Mercilus, but neither him nor Brahman has seen much of the field to show what they are capable of.

Usually, it looks to me like the Texans almost always try to cover all the bases entering a season.

When do they need to have a deal done, if there's gonna be one?

As of now, why would we offer Barwin a new deal?

I'm not worried about Barwin at all. I think his lack of stat productivity is caused by several factors. He's been going against several of the best LT's in the game, the scheme we've been running is partially to blame, and Watt has just been flat out dominant on the inside. I think Barwin re-signs for a good deal like Brown and Schaub.

We have 12 games left; he needs to have 10 sacks and several hurries or good plays for me to take OLB off my mock. In Wade's scheme OLBs are set up to make sacks. The fact Watt is doing well has little to do with Barwin's lack of productivity.

Uhhhm, BB.

Some of the guys in Wade's system made a lot of plays to the inside, a certain HOF comes to mind.

The shortest distance to the QB is still the inside.
When you're in one-on-one situation, this guy has a better chance to get there first.
Watt is just incredibly quick/strong and use his hands/arms so well, these interior O-linemen are not used to it.

The fact that Reggie White had his best 3 years of his career under Phillips is a proof (his second, third and fourth year).
Wade used him as a playmaker and moved him around pretty much the same way he's using Watt right now.

I know, and that is why I agree that a look at OLB in the draft is deserving... at least just so that you can cover all the bases.

You can also say Barwin helps Watt because he sets/holds the edge while collapsing the pocket. I wouldn't trade Barwin straight up for Mario Williams. Other than missing one season because of injury he has been a model of both consistency & production. Sack numbers are just another stat which does not accurately represent the whole picture, still, he could wind up w/double digit sacks (come in bunches).

Have no idea what your point is. My post says I expect more sacks from Barwin. You say Watt is getting sacks based on incredible skills, so what? I agree, but Barwin should still being doing much better than zero.

I am looking at the system Wade is using with the Texans. Phillips has said he works with what he has. This was said when addressing the nose. With the Texans what position has the most sacks, interior lineman or OLB? Antonio Smith got 6 sacks last year from the same short distance as Watt. Same year Barwin had 11.5 sacks. This front seven should be getting sacks from all positions except nose.

Set aside sacks for now and you are saying you are good with Barwin's production first four games? If yes, I cannot understand why.

Think in terms of TEAM for a moment. Does it really matter WHO gets the SACKS just long as they get SACKS? When teams focus more emphasis on WATT, because they have to, it will open up lanes for other pass rushers, including Barwin who so far has faced Jake Long (1st overall pick 08) Eugene Monroe (8th overall 09), Ryan Clady (12th overall 08) & Michael Roos (42nd 05) one could easily argue they are the strength of each teams OL. This week he gets D'Brickashaw Ferguson 4th overall selection in 06, one many Texan fans I remember wanted over the big three including Mario.

So please think about the competition he faces & matched up with, his responsibility for setting the edge keeping containment then trying to get to the QB first before some SWATT guy who is having a pro bowl year get's there first

I also don't base my impression of Connor after only four games. Would I like to see more production, sacks, you betcha but defense is strong, he plays his role still well, sooner or later he will break through just like he's proved in the past. Texans have far greater needs than adding another OLB into an already crowded can't get a Mercilus attack.

Let's backtrack a litlle bit.

What I disagree with you here is the claim that Wade's scheme is designed for the OLB to make more sacks.

Pray tell me how it's supposed to be done?

BL, 2 very good posts. I couldn't agree more. Guys there's nothing wrong with Barwin. He's playing very well within the scheme we're currently running and he goes against the opponents best O-lineman every week. He sets the edge and turns the RB back into the middle, like he should be doing. As long as the D is playing well it really doesn't matter who gets the stats. Teams will adjust to Watt sometime soon and Smith will start getting lots of stats along with Reed and Barwin. Look at Barwins lack of sack stats as money off his next contract. Barwin is just fine and I really hope we re-sign him. I really see no need for OLB in the 2013 draft unless we lose Barwin to FA and I really hope that doesn't happen.

Barwin has not been playing well. The qb is not sacked by Jj watt everytime he drops back.

There have been plenty opportunities for barwin to make plays and he hasn't. IMO, he's put on too much weight. He needs to slim down some.

(on OLB Connor Barwins play this season) I think hes playing very well. I dont know that I've ever seen a ball go away from a guy so much. I know its difficult because hes used to having those sacks and those production-type things that people see statistically. But I can just tell you (OLB) Connor Barwin is playing as well as hes ever played, as hard as hes ever played. Things will come his way. They tend to even out. Were proud of how hes playing. I think were benefiting inside because of how well Connor and (OLB) Brooks (Reed) are playing outside.
