I hope you're right, but I think he'll eventually do it. He's made it known he wants to be a HC again. Let's just hope the rest of the league thinks he's too old. Ha

If he does happen to leave (not really comfortable discussing this in week 4 1/2) I REALLY, REALLY, hope Kubiak is out of the decision making process of the new DC. I also'd like to stay with the 3-4

Man, you got that right! McNair really saved Kubiak's butt by intervening and bringing in Wade.

A lot of folks think Buddy Ryan deserves more credit than Mike Ditka for the Bears 1985 Super Bowl victory. Ditka was also paired with his DC by the owner, George Halas. Let's hope this works out the same way (without all the off-the-field soap operas).

Ok, so my gut feeling is no more accurate than his crystal ball but it tells me the same thing. I think he wants (or wanted) another shot. He didn't take it for some reason. Loyalty to the Texans organization? The impression I got from Wade's sister was that Wade learned from working with Jerry. It was a nightmare so he has been more selective when it comes to it. I don't know about the Tampa Bay job. We discussed nothing about that one but we did talk quite a bit about Jerry. He has a relative (a cousin or a nephew I don't remember) that is STUCK in Dallas under contract right now... and those are her words. It's just very telling how horrible things were over there. He is definitely looking for another HC job... but the ownership has to be right for him. Tampa Bay obviously wasn't it.

I don't doubt he would like to have another HC gig but I think he is going to be very picky about it. Usually HC jobs are offered from dysfunctional organizations. Not many people get to walk into a 14-2 team like Norv Turner. I also do think his local ties and his father's opinion will have a factor on making the choice more difficult than ordinary.

Let's just hope, for purely selfish reasons of course, that any team offering him a HC job is not the right fit, and that he retires from the Texans, with multiple as their DC! Not too much to ask, is it?

I agree with this - I think Wade would jump at the right offering, but there are only a few teams that could put him in a good situation. I doubt after Dallas he wants to work with teams like the browns, bucs, or raiders who have a rough history with head coaches. He would probably want a more stable team, even if they didn't have a solid season. There is a reason Fisher chose the Rams over the Dolphins. I think the question is not if wade would take it, but if one of the right organizations would offer it to him.

I think Phillips would take the right head coaching job. I just don't think he will get the offer. Age, health, image. Wade doesn't fit the profile. Unless you're talking about defensive results.

I could be wrong, and Phillips could get a head coaching offer after the Texans Super Bowl win. But, I see Wade retiring as a Texan assistant.

Possibly, but its not like I'm wishing him ill will. Even the players said they were glad he didn't take the interview last year. You're being a little sensitive I believe. I'm just hoping he remains a coach on the Texans staff making millions of dollars. Not too terrible of a way to live I think. He has a lot of things going against him, but I honestly think he could help get a team back on their feet quick if given the chance.

If Bob wants to keep Wade, put a full time department (invent it) to do nothing but make sure Wade Phillips FEELS like a head coach here.

Major ass kissing, in other words. Renovate an area of the coach's offices to create a Wade Phillips wing/complex...massage recliner chair, huge posters of Bum from his old days as coach in Houston, the whole thing like it's Wade's World up in there.

Coordinated efforts to get local media at his doorstep often. Parades. Honor events. Schmooze his azz off.

Make the old man feel like it'd actually be a damn step DOWN to take that lowly job in Loserville USA.

Wade to his agent: "What? I don't want to even consider that job! You told them I would listen? Hell no. I love it here. I have a massage chair!"

I suspect that all head coaches make better coordinators and that Head Coaches, in a way that will some day be figured out, are actually unnecessary.

He's the highest paid DC in the league (rightfully so) and has pretty much the same latitude as a HC here.

In Houston he's much more revered than the HC.

I think Him and Kubiak are in position to be in a very good symbiotic relationship and could very well win a championship or two.

Yep. Me and a friend have a theory that Bob McNair had a little private chat with Wade, in which Bob made certain promises should the team tank, and Bob needs to replace the head coach.

I cringe when I think about how much Bob is paying him. Wade is probably getting PAID up the wazoo (fairly, IMO), and likely has a "gentlemen's agreement" for the head coaching job, if that arises.

Wade has more value to this team than Gary. It's a fact.

I agree with this take. Most head coaching vacancies are with teams that have hit rock bottom. These teams usually need complete overhaul and must be built from the ground with regards to stocking players and changing losing attitudes.

Not too many openings like Jim Caldwell got with a HoF QB just coming off a Super Bowl win. And I think he was promoted from within anyway.

If the "perfect situation" ever exists for Wade, go for it. But, I think it's a very narrowly defined situation at this point, considering his age and prior record as a HC.

Well, yes and no. Sometimes, a team can't get over the hump - or are stuck in the middle - and need a coaching change. Chicago comes to mind as a team that, if they don't hit certain goals this year, I could see making a coaching change.
