Texans looking at DL.

The Texans tried to beef up the defensive line, looking at Remi Ayodele, Brandon Bair, Corbin Bryant, Clifton Geathers, Daniel Muir, and Jay Richardson.

Bair+Watt would be like trying to throw through a fan. Kind of lean for a D lineman though if you're trying to beef up the line.

Bair is ~ 6'6" to 6'7" 280. Mario was listed at 6'6" to 6'7" 288. JJ is listed at 6'5" 295. Bair led the entire Pac 10 in tackles for loss in 2010, He could still fit the bill under the guidance of a Wade led defense.

Bair would be a solid pick-up. He is good on special teams & can block some balls himself. They might start calling the Texans D the "S'Watt Team".

I'm assuming Holliday's roster spot is the one most likeliest to be freed up if they sign one of those later.

They're just checking out and grading FA players for future reference in case a need should arise, being prepared. I don't know anything about Bair but he sounds interesting. Has he got any speed or quickness? I can't help but think though that with his size if he had any potential he'd be on a roster somewhere.

Bair is a 6-6, 276 pound defensive end who was projected as a potential 5th or 6th round pick by NFL Draft Scout. Unfortunately for Bair, he fell off the board and is now in limbo with the other undrafted free agents.

Bair started as a DT at Oregon in 2010 but projects well as a five-technique in a 3-4 defense. The Chiefs are obviously interested in adding depth along their defensive front and Bair would be an interesting player to check out. His sheer size makes him a threat to bat down a lot of balls at the line. The scouts at Sideline Scouting like his swim move and first step as well as his quickness and ability to get into the backfield. He has 15.5 tackles for a loss in 2010.

Some things that may have hurt Bair in the draft are his age and his weight. At 6-6 he could stand to add some heft to his frame and he will be a 26 year old rookie due to spending two years on a church [2 year Mormon] mission.

Former Oregon defensive lineman Brandon Bair (6-foot-6, 276) likely improved his draft stock during Monday’s workouts at the NFL Scouting Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind.

Bair turned in an unofficial time in the 40-yard dash 4.82 seconds and also performed well in several other events.

Bair ranked seventh among the 57 defensive linemen at the combine in the 3-cone drill (7.07 seconds), 10th in the 20-yard shuttle (4.37) and 13th in the broad jump (9’6”).

NFLDraftScout.com ranks Bair as the18th best defensive end prospect in the draft and projects him to be a sixth-round pick. But that was before the combine.

Bair, 26, was perceived to lack the speed and quickness to play defensive end in the 4-3 defense. With his strong performance in the 40, some 4-3 teams might now consider him a good strong-side defensive end prospect.

However, his best bet could be develop as a 3-4 defensive end, a position that requires more bulk and less speed than a typical 4-3 defensive end.

“This kid here is what I call the ideal developmental 5-technique,” NFL Network’s lead draft analyst Mike Mayock said during the broadcast of the combine. “Brandon Bair played inside at defensive tackle (at Oregon). He’s almost 6-foot-6. He weighs 276, and look at him, he’s lean. You can throw 20 pounds on him in the next year and all of the sudden you have a 300-pound, 5-technique, which is the defensive end in the 3-4.”


“He plays like that,” Sapp said. “Big and strong.”

Wisconsin’s J.J. Watt ran a 4.84 at 6-foot-5 290 pounds and got 34 reps in the bench press and had a 37” vertical.

Mayock called Watt the prototype 3-4 defensive end.

NFLDraftScout.com ranks Watt as the fifth-best defensive end in the draft and projects him to be a first-round pick.

If Bair could add some bulk and maintain his athleticism, as Mayock suggests, he could develop into a top prospect.

“One of those 3-4 teams is going to scoop him up in the third or fourth round, put 20 pounds on him and all of the sudden (you have a) 6-6, 300-pound, 5-technique sitting face up on that offensive tackle,” Mayock added.

Bair should at least be stashed on the PT squad. I've watched him play plenty of times, not only does he fit in Wade Phillips system he would be another interesting character fit in clubhouse. Take similar path as Tim Jamision who worked hard & eventually core player on 53 man roster. I'm not saying he could be the next Ted Hendricks, who was all of 220lbs @ 6-7, but I would love to see him stick around here awhile

the general pattern over time is to bring a different position group every week. Most of the time, Tuesday tryout is not immediate need nor signing driven.

I think he's on the Raiders PS right now. We can't get him unless it is to the 53 right?

He sounds like a guy with potential but with Crick and Jamison on the roster as 3-4 DE backups, I don't see room on the roster for Bair. Kubiak also seems to favor guys who already know the teams system, like training some guy for a couple weeks is some major inconvenience.

I don't think it was Gary that was choosing those defensive players prior to Wade. I think it was Bush and Richard Smith before him.
