Bum Phillips

I got to meet Bum Phillips last night. He was the guest speaker at Lamar University's football banquet here in Beaumont. Bum played college ball at what was Lamar Junior College at the time.

I told him they needed to get Earl out to a Texan game for the pre-game ceremony. He agreed and said it needs to happen.

This was a big thrill for me to meet Bum. I had him sign my old copy of He Ain't No Bum

FREAKING AWESOME!! So envious Greg! I can't post on here the EXTREMES I would go to to get Bum's and Earl's autograph on my authenic, all leather Oiler jacket!! It is a dream of mine to meet him and Earl before I die, or they do!

If you haven't done it already, I can't emphasize enough how much people should read Bum Phillips autobiography. I had no idea what a bad ass he was throughout his whole life. It's a very inspirational book.

You can get an autographed copy for $30 and all the proceeds go to the charities he discusses in the book. Dude is 88 and if you don't get an autographed copy of his book, you kind of suck.

Oh, I've met him a few times. My impression was, remove the hat, and Bum was shorter than I expected. Some of it was just age, I'm sure. Good guy. Great to listen to.

I remember him walking into the Victoria Lowe's about ten years ago... he was for sure not short looking then, but not exactly Goliath or anything... was never a huge Oilers fan so I wasn't excited because of that, just excited to see Bum Freakin' Phillips! he said "hello" and I said "hi" back...was in awe...He did commercials for a chevy dealership in Victoria and pulled up in a big 4-door chevy with his logo on the side of it... just nonchalantly walked into the store, did his business and went on his way...

Tear down the 'dome and put a nice park in the middle with a big statue of Bum & Earl. Those men are icons in this city, and future generations should always be reminded of how much they mean to this city.

I read this book thanks to Steph posting about it before, and I must agree with Steph, it one of the best reads I have read in a while. I learned so much about the man and the game that I love.
