Welcome to TT.
Underrated? #8 has a place in the hearts of many Texan Fans, simply because he's smarter at the position than any prior Texan QB. However, a some-what accurate QB, with limited mobility and arm strength, who has had issues staying on the field(not entirely on him, but still, is what it is) may be justifiably deemed underrated. IMHO, what MAtt lacks in physical attributes on the field, he compensates with preparation. He's a student of the game, for sure. I'm not sure about top 10. Maybe.. by stats alone. If I could pick an active QB in the NFL, and reset them to their rookie year and build a team around them, Matt is not in the top 10 of choices... EVER. So, to turn the question back to you... What has Matt got/done that makes him so Underrated? |

While Matt is perfect Qb for our system, in my perfect world, I hope Yates can replace Matt in 2013. Schaub will be 32 and probably wanting a hefty raise. I think most understand what we have in Matt both negatives and positives. The position is just so hard to fill like LT, when you get a good player you tend to want to keep him.
Welcome to the board. ALso want to invite you to stop in to the forum on NFL mock drafts. Lots of info flows thru there.

One thing that I think will come into play is that there is always someone in the NFL willing to pay a QB who they think has "gotten it done". Now we can argue all day over whether Matt has in fact gotten it done and over what that means but as long as someone out there thinks that Schaub can get them over the hump, mentor their rookie, or run their system better than whoever they have at the moment there will be a market for Matt's services. I've lost count of how many chances some QB's have been given and even Chris Chandler, the friggin benchmark for fragile QB's managed to play 16 years for 8 different teams because there was always someone who could use a QB.
Matt is fragile (by some people's definition) but he's also very effective (by some people's definition). People are going to look at him and say "With the Texans he was always under pressure, always getting hit. If we can keep him clean...." Someone will want to take Matt off our hands if we're inclined to let him go. There's enough doubt still there for a team to decide that he's not fragile and pay him. Which brings us to the Houston Texans. Matt isn't going anywhere until someone already on our team has proven that they can take the job from him. The Texans held on to David Carr with a death grip for years just because Bob McNair liked him and believed in him. Gary got here and was able to convince Bob to give up his pretty face of the franchise and signed onto the Matt Schaub plan. Gary wanted him, he likes him, and he trusts him. He knows the system and clearly in Gary's opinion Matt has gotten it done. He doesn't seem to think that Matt is "the problem" if indeed we even really have much of one now and the evidence seems to support that. Sure Gary drafts QB's and signs UDFA QB's. He picks up QB's off the street and tries to fix them. Gary was a QB and he liked coaching QB's. We can all see that. I think that he understands that Matt is a good player and I think he's content to stick with him until such time as a QB comes through here and takes that job away or Matt stops getting it done. We're going to resign Matt Schaub and he'll be the starter until Yates or Keenum or some guy that we've yet to meet comes in and takes the job from him. It doesn't matter how much love he doesn't get from us. The one man whose opinion matters thinks he's gotten it done.

I really don't think the Texans are going to have any trouble resigning Matt Schaub. He'll sign for less than the elite guys and they'll get a deal done that is easy to live with. He's an entrenched starter here on a team that gave him his shot. He's not going anywhere.

Clearly there is some logic to saying go for the bucks. The problem is the smart play to get more bucks may be to sign here for less. He is successfully leading a team. Only a few teams run similar systems. One just put a #2 pick at QB. So there is a very narrow market for teams where he would not have a significant system change. So longevity with the system and coach are significant factors. Playing out a 5 year $50 mil contract is more money than getting cut 3 years into a $60 mil contract.
