Matt Schaub has best Super Bowl shot among QBs without title

Quote:
There are currently six starting quarterbacks in the NFL who have won a Super Bowl: Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Eli Manning, Drew Brees, Ben Roethlisberger and Aaron Rodgers have combined to win 10 championships. And it wouldn't be much of a surprise to see any of those six men hoisting the Lombardi Trophy following the upcoming season.

However, just for kicks, let's examine which quarterback is most likely to become the seventh member of that elite club. I've taken the 26-plus eligible candidates and narrowed the list down to the seven quarterbacks who are closest to winning their first Super Bowl.

Quote:
1. Matt Schaub, Houston Texans

If not for Schaub's injury last season, he might already be a Super Bowl champion. The Texans were playing outstanding football before Schaub suffered a foot injury that forced him to miss the final six games of the regular season and the playoffs. Despite his absence, the Texans won their division and picked up their first playoff win by defeating the Bengals in an AFC wild-card game. In the divisional round, they did something that very few teams have ever done: physically whipping the Ravens on both sides of the line of scrimmage. Arian Foster rushed for 132 yards and the Texans' defense held the Ravens' offense to 227 total yards. Despite three costly interceptions by backup quarterback T.J. Yates, the Texans only lost 20-13. It's hard to imagine the Texans losing that game with a healthy Schaub in the lineup.

Despite allowing some big names to depart via free agency, the Texans still have a stacked roster. Foster is one of the top three running backs in the league, Andre Johnson is still a freak and the offensive line is one of the best in the league. On defense, Wade Phillips is one of the top coordinators in the NFL and has a bevy of talented pass rushers at his disposal. Brian Cushing is one of the top three inside linebackers in the league and a big play waiting to happen. Overall, if Schaub can stay healthy, this team is ready to contend for a championship this season.

Great read & all, but I'm just not seeing it. That was last year.... he had a great shot last year & it just didn't work out.

We're starting from 0-0, like every other team out there & who knows what's going to happen.

Gary Kubiak has taken this club from 6-10 to 6-10.... & while I'm not one to dump on the man, we've never backed up a good running game with a good running game. A good defense, with a good defense. A healthy season, with a healthy season.

The one good thing about the upcoming season, is that we're playing a sub-0.500 schedule for the first time in Kubiak's tenure.

A good defense, with a good defense. No argument hereA healthy season, with a healthy season. Since last season was an unhealthy season, then it should be a healthy season this year, no?

I don't completely agree with your assessment. A coaching staff is a sum of all parts. We had a very weak link on Defense, sealed that up and now we have an all around good football team. However, for Gary NOT to get any credit for last year is very short sighted. 3rd string QB, shuffling of RB's at the begining of the season, AJ out for a lengthy period of time. Through all that, Kubes still managed to get some points on the board....

Based on that list, Matt's a pretty easy choice for "most likely". I'd have Stafford right up there, too.

7. Matthew Stafford, Detroit Lions

6. Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys

5. Andy Dalton, Cincinnati Bengals

4. Joe Flacco, Baltimore Ravens

3. Michael Vick, Philadelphia Eagles

2. Alex Smith, San Francisco 49ers

1. Matt Schaub, Houston Texans

Vick and Romo made that list? Holy hell, if those teams win it will be completely in SPITE of what the QBs do for their respective teams. Schaub's chances are infinitely doubled because none of the "elite" or previous SB winning QB's are in-division. Both Romo and Vick have the same guy to worry about: Eli.

Good list if you axe those chumps out.

I couldn't disagree more...ESPECIALLY about Romo.

Dallas' D failed them last year. Romo was 100% magnificent a season ago.

Tony Romo is as good as (more than likely better than) a QB as Schaub is. The Dallas Cowboys are a victim of Jerry Jones the GM (3 draft picks for Roy Williams lol) much much more than they are a victim of Tony Romo.
