Default LZ: Breaking down Texans-Ravens

Quote:
Texans Keys to the Game

1. Texans must run the ball well and consistently - I donít care if the Texans throw on the early down to catch the Ravens off-guard or if they take their shots down the field, but to win this game, the Texans have to finish the game with a strong performance from Arian Foster and have to limit negative rushing plays or no gains to almost none.

2. Two tight-end sets are the key - The Ravens will overload to the strong side and then sneak a safety down over the weak-side so the Texans would be advised to show the Ravens some two tight end sets in order to force them to balance out on their defensive front. That allows the Texans to pick and choose which direction they want to run rather than having it dictated to them by the Ravens.

3. Donít let Torrey Smith beat you for the big play - Johnathan Joseph is the Texans best cover corner and Anquan Boldin is the Ravens best receiver, but Boldin is also coming off of a minor knee surgery and hasnít played football for three weeks and might be a little rusty. So should the Texans keep Joseph on Boldin or risk putting Kareem Jackson on the speedy Torrey Smith? Joe Flacco will take some shots down the field and Kareem isnít fast enough to keep up with Smith so he will either have to play off of Smith or the Texans will have to roll safety help to that side. The only other option is trying to play Joseph on Smith like they did when they matched up Joseph against Pierre Garcon and his speed.

4. Be ready to play big boy football up the middle - The Ravens didnít have Ben Grubbs the last time these two teams played and the Ravens LG is a very good run blocker. With the Ravens healthy on the offensive line and with Vonta Leach leading the way, Wade Phillips is going to have to manufacture ways to clog the middle as I donít think he can just play base defense and expect for Shaun Cody to hold up against double teams. One of the things the Texans will do is slant J.J. Watt towards the nose in an effort to bolster their interior and I would also be interested to see if the Texans use some ďA-gapĒ blitzes between the guard and center to dissuade the Ravens from running there.

d
Key Matchup: Chris Myers vs. Ray Lewis

If the Texans donít run the ball well, it is going to be almost impossible to win. To run the ball the Texans have to set the edge with their tackles to set up the outside zone, but an equally important task will be the job of Chris Myers, Texans center, to handle Ray Lewis. My dad faced off against Ray Lewis and the Ravens 16 different times during his tenure with the Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers as offensive line coach. Listen to what he has to say about Ray Lewis and how you handle him.

JJo needs to cover Smith the speedster. Then the two remaining "physically challenged" players should be pitted against each other. If either of the corners play 5-10 yards off, 1st downs will become plentiful.

As well as we did against the run with the Bengals, they certainly seemed to readily be able to pick up 3rd and short right up the middle on us. If we can't counteract this against the the Ravens, we'll be in for a very long and unhappy day.

I think the Duane Brown will be a key too

whether against Redding (If I recall he plays that side) or Suggs coming in within the hybrid defense they have

Iīm gonna have a real problem on sunday. I am moving this saturday - and I want have any TV or internet (only on the iphone) for the weekend... I don`t know how Iīm supposed to get through playoff weekend, especially since the Texans are playing. I may have to find some bar which shows the game, but in Germany bars that show American Football are kinda hard to find...

Teams have been lining their NT head up on Myers, making it difficult for him to get to those LBs... This is where Brisiel & Wade are going to have to pick it up, either get in there & pick up the NT quickly, or they'll have to get up to the second level to take out RayRay.

I kindly suggest that Lance Z go back and rewatch the Colts games last year and the Ravens games from last year as well as this year (while taking into account what the coaches said instead of disregarding it altogether.)

3. What the hell is 25 doing playing. Not fast enough to cover Smith. Does not look for ball reception or interference best options with this coverage. No chance of interception. Maybe we get a break a Boldin is not ready to play.
