Default Maehl joins Texans, LIKELY to play Sunday

The question that has been brought up with his elevation to the active roster
..........will he only play at STs or will he appear as a WR. This could answer the question..........from a non-Texas-generated article.

Quote:
Last January, former Paradise High star wide receiver Jeff Maehl saw his college career with Oregon end in a 22-19 loss to Auburn and Cam Newton in the BCS national championship game.

This Sunday, the former Bobcat makes his NFL regular-season debut for the Houston Texans — against Newton and the Carolina Panthers.

The ironic twist is in play because on Tuesday, Texans head coach Gary Kubiak promoted the undrafted rookie wide receiver to the 53-man roster.

The move came one day after the team waived veteran NFL wide receiver Derrick Mason. Mason, a former Pro Bowl player who had caught six passes for 55 yards this year, was cut because Kubiak in a press conference on Monday said the team needed help on special teams.

But wide receivers coach Larry Kirksey told HoustonTexans.com on Tuesday night that Maehl will also be the team's fourth wideout on Sunday and thinks the 6-foot, 178-pound Maehl is ready.

"Jeff has been here now from the beginning of the season, so as far as knowing the offense and the concepts and things of that nature, we feel confident that he can go in and play several different positions for us," Kirksey said. "At the same time, he can give us some support on special teams."

Kirksey said that Maehl worked all year and deserved an opportunity.

"He's a football player, number one. If you go back and look at Oregon, what he did, the guy was productive," Kirksey said. "He doesn't have great speed (4.62-second 40-yard dash), but he has
Advertisement
good playing speed and has good hands and has good awareness and he knows how to play the game."

The last time Maehl appeared in a game that mattered was the BCS championship loss to Auburn, when he caught nine passes for 133 yards and a game-tying 2-point conversion.

Maehl's father, Steve, said that Kubiak informed Jeff earlier in the week of the move.

"I talked to him yesterday," Steve Maehl said. "He met with Kubiak. He said they were bumping him up. He is really excited."

Maehl's mom, Lucy, will be in Houston this weekend to see her son's debut. Steve Maehl said it was a pre-planned trip.

"But it will be a better trip now," he said. "He will be in uniform and hopefully he will catch a ball or two."

Steve Maehl said his son has been working hard all year for this.

"I know they like him," he said. "Or he would have been gone a long time ago."

If he does play, he may be the first Paradise High grad to ever play a regular-season down in the NFL. According to Profootballreference.com, one Paradise-born player, Ward Walsh, appeared in 21 games for the Houston Oilers and the Green Bay Packers between 1971 and 1972. But it's unclear if Walsh, a running back who had one career TD, went to Paradise High.

Paradise High coach and graduate Tom Flesher was signed as a free agent by the Green Bay Packers, but never appeared in a regular-season game, according to the website.

Wonder how strong the Yates-Maehl timing is.

I hope they go to him often in the next three weeks. Yates needs a third guy he can depend on (apart from O.D. & K.W.) and I'm no longer thinking J.J. is that guy.

Let's face it, they cut Mason because he sucked bonzos. At least Maehl is young and hopefully his better days are in front of him. Didn't he set some sort of combine record? 3 cone I think? That tells me he's got the ability to get open and good hands is something our WR corps need desperately. Maybe he can turn into our version of Lance Moore and just run quick slants all friggin day.

Agree completely, although, J.J. clearly scares defenders, look at the PI he drew against PacMan to put us on the goal line with 8 seconds left. No way does the defender do that in that situation unless he's scared shitless of the reciever.

JJ needs to remain in as a decoy and you still need to let him turn on the burners for a deep target a few times per game because it changes the D's mentality and eventually one has got to connect.

Maehl seems like a good David Anderson replacement in many ways, not physically gifted but he must have a sound knowledge of the playbook and sure hands for them to promote him from the PS.

This place is totally devoted to Maehl. I remember when we we signed him
as a FA this past summer after he failed to get drafted in April and the lockout
was finally resolved, well the story of his signing hit this little paper in Paradise
immediately and I guarantee you every dish in that small northern California
city will be focused on the feed for the Texans-Panthers 10:05 AM Sunday kickoff (local time).
Thanks for the article C&D.

If he's playing for Kubiak he's playing special teams.

I hope he gets some good snaps at WR too. I was really excited when we signed him and think he's got a ton of potential on a team like us.

Remember this kid from the college championship game last year vs Cam &
Auburn ? He was like a latter-day Fred Biletnikoff ("hands of glue").

Kubiak should just line him up and let him play because because at this point there is more to gain and nothing to lose at this point.

I was a big Maehl fan when he was in Oregon. He's a quick guy with great hands. I'm not saying he'll be the next Wes Welker, but I think he has a similar skill set. I hope he sees the field on offense, because I think he'll be a huge improvement over Mason.
