I see Texans winning out and selecting # 27.
1. Slot Wide Receiver Kendall Wright will be gone prior to our 2nd. 2. Flanker WR Dwight Jones. I know some have him higher but he will be pushed down. Roster: AJ/Walter/JJ/KW/DJ 3. RT/LT Ricky Wagner (Wisconsin) will get a higher rating from NFL but falls. 4. S/CB Winston Guy 5. LG/T Brandon Washington. 6. C/RT/OG Phillip Blake 7. FB Chad Diehl

Cody has been stellar this year Vs the run .... a big part of why the Texans are #4 in the NFL Vs the run. Earl Mitchell hasnt been bad either.
I wouldnt mind a big 330+NT myself ..... but its far from a mandatory position.

I worry. What if Cody goes down? Mitchell is good, but he is very light for a NT (289), and who would back him up? I really think we need another one just for some depth and development. A big one who can withstand the pounding from double teams and collapse the pocket would be better IMO.

Mitchell started off shaky earlier in the year but he's gotten better IMO. He made a few plays in the last game too. He runs better than Cody and he made more plays down the line. I don't know if either are capable of being dominant down in there, but they have been good to very good at times. I'm wondering what positions could use an upgrade on defense next year and what positions would be worth a high first round pick and honestly the only position I can think of is corner. That sounds crazy with Kareem and Allen playing pretty well but this is a good draft for corners. Someone may pay Allen more than we want to. It'd be nice to have Harris step up but I have no clue what well get from him. I'm not saying I'd target a corner. I'd be targeting wr. But like I said, if one of the top ranked corners happened to fall, like Kirkpatrick for instance, I'd think really hard about taking him. Or even one of the other guys. Kj could still be the starter or if the other guy outplayed him then we'd just be really deep at a position that you need quality depth at. That would make our defense that much more scary. That said, I'd target receiver all the way. But one of those really good corners would be awesome IMO. Make them earn their way onto the field and if they did you'd know they were playing outstanding ball. |

JMO, but I think you'd be better off switching 1 and 2. I don't see the need for 2 top tier WR's but if you want both I think Jones goes in the 1st and Wright in the 2nd. Both excellent players. Wagner and Guy are both good picks. I don't think Washington lasts til the 5th, he's a stud at OG and capable of playing RT. He's got versatility and I think he goes in the very late 2nd or more likely in the 3rd round. Seems a little early for Blake but this late in the draft anything can happen, he better develop quick on the practice squad. Diehl makes sense as well because he'd be much cheaper than Vickers but I have my doubts on Kubiak taking him because he's only a FB, he don't run with the ball or catch it. I don't see Kubiak allowing a player to be that one dimensional. I like Cody Johnson a little better here because he can run and catch as well.
Why so many O-linemen and so few defensive players when depth is need almost everywhere on defense? |

I think we have two soon to be glaring concerns at both guards. Winston has had a very good year imo but I would move him to OG. Not urgent move but as soon as we have someone ready to replace him. I have Wisconsin's Wagner in mind. Beerlover identified Zeitler as a Wisconsin player to watch & while I was impressed, teammate Wagner caught my eye. Ricky is very good and could beat out Rashad Butler & he is bigger with better moves imo. No guarantee Butler will return 100% anyway. Wagner to replace Winston who slides to RG allowing Brisiel to drop to backup.
Washington was forced to move by coach from OG to Left Tackle this season and has done an ok job. In NFL, he would be an ideal guard and has a bit of a mean streak to him with an excellent inital punch. He plays angry (probably at his coach who dissed him verbally)but controlled. You don't want to lay opposite him. So he replaces Wade Smith. He and Wagner could switch as in NFL games one could be better suited than other at one of the tackles. Smith will be 31 YOA with minimal contract so we could cut with little cap ramification. Myers is an excellent center who will be re-signed this off season. WHile he never misses a start we need someone behind him to be able to take over. Center as you know in our ZBS offense calls the plays for the Oline. That is why Myers kept Kubiak's trust his first couple of years when Myers was getting beat by bigger opponents. Urgency to replace is less much less tha the 2 OGs but we do need a guy. Blake can play all OLine but specialty is center. The other two are better as OTs or OGs imo. Hope this clarifies my thinking.

Corrosion said it all. I wanted Ta'Amu until he had an injury and never caught back up. Then Poe made it to my #1 but I can't convince myself Wade will use a first on a NT with Cody doing so well. IF and that's a big one, Poe was avail in 2nd AND we got our WR in first, maybe he'd choose Poe. None of the smaller DTs do it for me but not saying Wade will not want one later rounds.

I did lots of thinking on that while trying to put this mock together. I would do that but don't think it's best. That is why I went WRs in first two rounds. That positon goes immediately to strongest in NFL. Coach would not do it, see my thoughts above. Cody & Mitchell doing too well. I would not be stunned if Ta'Amu taken and he might just fall. I think Pittsburgh will choose him or Poe as they draft before us.

Ta'Amu would be excellent value in second but you answer your own question with Wade being satisfied with Cody/Mitchell. In a perfect world, I'd love to see Wright, Ta'amu and McNutt or Broyles in first 3 rounds. Talk about Heaven.

Yea I am also a big fan of McNutt and think he has the ability to be a very solid WR in the NFL. Being at Iowa hurts his status I feel because they are not a heavy pass oriented system, but has still put up good numbers. What are your thoughts on Jordan White from Western Michigan as a potential 4th round pick at WR?
