Default Week 13 Texan Mock

First Round: Dwight Jones, North Carolina, WR 6040 225

Big target to help Andre & former teammate Tar Heel QB TJ Yates. Senior prospect with good combination of size/speed with #1 potential, should make excellent #2 option. Averages 93.3 yards per game, 11 TD's, 14.16 yards per catch, 1119 yards. The association & learning curve should be maximized between Yates & Jones having worked together already for three years. This was a deciding factor, all things being equal with other WR prospects with similar numbers, skill set & measureables. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yA1G_w2kfj0

Second Round: Kevin Zeitler, Wisconsin, OG 6034 322

Upgrade RG is needed going forward, Brisel is maxed out, causes mutliple false start infractions, otherwise Wade Smith will be over 30 & so far Caldwell has yet to impress. Safe pick, solid starting caliber OL keeping edge to an OL playing above their heads. Add subtle improvement while getting younger & more talented. Texans have had good results with Badgers, JJ Watt & Owen Daniels.

Third Round: Rishard Matthews, Nevada, WR 6014 208

A playmaker & physical presence who compliments Texan WR's can fill the slot, or stretch the field on the corners. 91 receptions, 1364 yards, 15 yards per catch 113.7 per game. Riser in draft who would cement Texan WR corp like Wade Phillips did with Watt & Brooks last draft.

Fourth Round: Travian Robertson, South Carolina, NT 6040 303

Fifth-year senior defensive tackle... team leader and experienced player... a preseason second-team All-SEC selection by Phil Steele... remaining healthy is a key - focused much of his energies on his flexibility in the spring... key player in the interior of the Gamecock defense... earned his degree in criminal justice in May... has made 19 career starts among his 43 games played over the past four seasons. Like his athleticism, adds depth in the middle, talent to develop into starter, very disruptive can engage double teams.

Fifth Round: Jerry Franklin, Arkansas, ILB 6100 245

Jerry leds a very good defensive Arkansas unit in tackles with with 93, 20 more than talented Alonzo Highsmith. Not much of a sack artist which hurts his stock & reason I feel he could still be available but solid wrap up tackler, excellent depth player for a Texan squad with more than its share of injury's.

Sixth Round: Robert Golden, Arizona, CB/SS 5110 200

Glover Quin doesn't get near enough credit, the move to SS was overdue & sure seems to me like his natural NFL position as if he's already been playing here his whole career. Robert Golden is very similar & would make an excellent back-up cause you know Texan injury history. Physical with good size plays fearless with heart & passion.

Kept it all Seniors. Flipped needs first four rounds to emphasize WR void. Thank you TJ for playing a solid, mistake free game, thought you deserved one of your former WR's as go to guy

Absolutely love this mock,

There's not one thing that I would change.

Matthews is going to be a steal for a team that's willing to wait 1/2 yrs on him. I had him in one of my earlier mocks. He's Jacoby with better hands.

Drafting recievers in two of the first three picks .... what does this mean for JJ?

It means he's a full time PR.

Also it means we wont have to watch him get a case of the aligator arms/dropping passes when he goes over the middle.

After all wouldn't want him to get hurt and not be able to go partying down on Westheimer.

I do think they need another WR and there are a few possible upgrades by position, but more than ever, it feels like the next draft needs to address *depth* rather than filling huge immediate holes. This season has shown how important depth can be with the ridiculous number of injuries to key players. And in the past the team has had enough glaring weaknesses at starting positions that the team needed to draft for immediate needs. There aren't as many huge holes and weaknesses this year, so "depth" may be addressed this time around.

For an answer to this simply look at last years draft & what it meant to this Texan defense by using both first & second round draft picks @ DE's/OLB in JJ Watt & Brooks Reed- A Texan defense able to survive without it's #1 pass rusher Mario Williams. Not sure about Jacoby he has flashed at times over the past four yeas but then he just disappears, his play has been solid on special teams, improved in assignments & pass blocking but it's even more about Andre Johnson & not having him healthy/available on a week to week basis that really concerns me.

It means nothing about Jacoby. He got his fingers on the pass we all saw but Yates threw it where he had to. That miss was not on JJ. WR corp for 2012: AJ/Walter/JJ/1st round/another draft pick. Lestar Jean remains on PS and other FA cut.

1. Jones, I love this pick. I've been preaching this guy for a while now and he's at the top of my latest mock as well.
2. Zeitler, love this pick as well no problems at all.
3. Mathews, I don't know anything about him and don't think we need another WR after Jones in the 1st. I'd look for a NT here which would also allow the Texans to move Earl Mitchell to DE, killing 2 birds with one stone.
4. Robertson, I like this guy as well and had him in some of my mocks also. I think he's good DE depth.
5. Franklin, I don't know much about him but I like the ILB depth/position chosen. He makes either Sharpton or Dobbins expendable. Bigger than Sharpton and cheaper than Dobbins.
6. Golden, again I don't know anything about him but as SS depth I like the pick. Anything that moves Barber off the roster is a good pick. As a CB, no thanks.

I really like 4 of the 6 picks, very good picks. That 7th round conditional pick for Mason was conditional on how many passes he catches. Go ahead and make a 7th round pick, Mason's hardly been used.

Right on. Receiving upgrade, OL interior upgrade, depth on DL, LB, DB, excellent imo where need is concerned. BPA?

I honestly wonder whether or not to address QB but it seems like injuries aside, they are decently stacked with Schaub, Leinart and Yates next year.

They will definitely need to pick up a few RBs UDFA and perhaps another DL choice in this scenario but I don't see many scenarios where that isn't the case.

Definitely like it more than last weeks mock!

My viewpoint upon selecting a 2nd WR this early in the draft is based on position of need, strength in numbers & bpa. It would be unfair to expect the results seeking out of a single player, even if his measureables/resume shine & he's coming into the perfect situation. #1 WR is a difficult position to make the jump to the NFL. #2 Everyone has a different learning curve, some take off right away others take 2-3 years. #3 Injurys. How many rookie WR's stay healthy an entire season? Therefore depth becomes an issue & Texans have a significant deficit on the outside minus Andre.

So what if it takes two stones to kill one bird. You identify a need address it then if chance happens to decimate it you make that call & wipe it clean off your board. Rishard is trending upwards based on his game film & numbers. He will have his chance to shine in the Senior Bowl & combine. To me he bears some resemblance to Steve Smith of the Carolina Panthers who was by the way also a 3rd rd. pick.

7th rd. pick? Texans tend to stay local, how about QB Case Keenum?

I've got Matthews as a 4th rder. But would be willing to spend a 3rd on him. He's kind of a sleeper due to his JUCO background. It may take him a couple of yrs to make an impact. But the talent is there and will be well worth the wait.

He's a little bigger version of Steve Smith. Who in this draft would you compare him too? I'm talikng production wise, does he compare to Jarius Wright, Kendall Wright etc.... ?

Matthews compares well IMHO. He has the size, speed, strength to be a productive WR in the NFL if the work ethic is there.

Looking forward your comparisons.

Third Round: Rishard Matthews, Nevada, WR 6014 208

Scouting Report http://nflmocks.com/2011/11/23/risha...outing-report/

Pretty good speed for a guy of his size, and has the ability to hurt you in multiple different areas. He can return punts, he can carry the ball out of the backfield, and obviously he is dangerous in the passing game. Had a breakout season in 2010 with seven total touchdowns, averaging over 15 yards per reception. Following it up with a very promising senior season, once again averaging close to 16 yards per catch and really emerging as the number one receiver. Limited route tree could hurt him on draft day, but he definitely has the size and speed to make it in the NFL. His versatility will be a huge help for him, and I think scouts will like the fact that he is a willing blocker downfield. He doesn’t give up on plays. Former junior college standout who transferred to Nevada in 2010.

PROS: Size, quickness, not the fastest, but he’s got some speed, willing blocker, able to make acrobatic catches, can contribute on special teams

CONS: Limited route tree, not an elite level athlete, what kind of impact can he make as a secondary, third, or fourth receiver? Need to see more of him overall.
Intangibles I've observed - knack for working to find seams, good hands target to reception ratio & above average ball security (does not turn it over) also flashes ability to run after catch. I like players who don't give up on plays, can block & spring other teammates & versatile (return punts). My best guess is he will run around a 4.5 @ the combine & measure in around 6 ft. & change, around 205-10, close to Mohamed Sanu size without the the insane vertical (36").

I like this mock. I would like to get a NT a little higher (2nd) but I,m not opposed to getting Zeitler either. As for getting 2 WR's early, I really think we need to due to AJ and KW not getting any younger and the injury bug with AJ also, and I'm really liking Jones more and more. Good mock!
