Default rmartin65's Half Season Mock

Threw this together last night, let me know what you guys think.

1) Notre Dame WR Michael Floyd, 6’3” 225 lbs
Guys, receiver is a huge need. AJ is not getting older, and has had a couple serious leg injuries. And I really don’t like the sound of the surgery that went down this last time. Enter Floyd. While I dislike the Fighting Irish, you cant deny this kid’s skill. Floyd plays like a poor-man’s AJ, and in time, I think he could become an adequate replacement. He wont be AJ (no one but AJ can be AJ), but he can become a legit number 1 receiver, if he keeps his head on straight.

2) Oklahoma OLB Ronnell Lewis, 6’2” 245 lbs
In a 3-4 D, you cant have too many rush OLBs. And Ronnell “the Hammer” Lewis is just the guy to add- he is capable, and has a nasty disposition on the field. In addition, he can play ST right away. Hopefully between Reed, Barwin and Lewis, we can see Mario go in the next couple years.

3) Washington OG Senio Kelemete, 6’3” 302 lbs
Kelemete began his career as a DT, and only made the switch to offense a couple years ago. In that time, he has been named a team captain and made the All Pac 12 honorable mention team, as well as earning the team Offensive Weightlifting award in 2010. Kelemete, while still learning the intricacies of playing on offense, has shown the athleticism to be a starter in the NFL.

4) Michigan NT Mike Martin, 6’1” 305 lbs
Ok Big-NT guys, let me have it. But outside of a couple players who will go in the first 2 rounds of the draft, there are just no big NTs worth picking in this draft. Martin is an alternative who has experience playing the nose (under the previous Michigan regime). Martin can probably get up to 310 lbs, and has very active and strong hands. He understands leverage and body position, 2 attributes for a NT. While he wont become a star, I think he can become a starting caliber NT.

5) Arkansas ILB Jerry Franklin, 6’1” 240 lbs

6) Kentucky SS/FS Winston Guy, 6’1” 216 lbs

I think another key here is where the Texans pick . If you pick in the top 10 you expect a guy who walks on and plays . If you pick in the 20's it's not as critical so you can pick guys who fill a need and also give you depth .

1. It would be nice to get a talented WR to groom .
2. I would go for a player at OLB because with Barwin , Reed , maybe Braman , and ? I wouldn't sign Mario for a huge contract at OLB . I would look to pay Foster .
3. Always need talent on the OL .
4. A scrappy NG .

I like it overall .

I think if Floyd was still on the board Texans would wipe away his off field issues & run to the commish.

Do you think Lewis could fit inside as well?

Senio Kelemete is a little stiff in the hips for ZBS. Like position though.

I could see Martin in the 4th or 5th? Another Chuckie like they currently employ.

Franklin is typical of the value you can get later @ ILB. Good depth, solid against the run, would probably be seeing spot situations right now with Sharpton out.

Guy in the 6th is excellent value pick. Doesn't play smart but has other positive tangibles you covet for safety position.

This draft should yield two starters, quality depth @ three positions plus a surprise one way or another, nice work my friend, as always thinking a little outside the box

This mock seems to be more in-line to what I have been thinking so far. Beerlover mentioned off-field issues for Floyd, what kind of issues are we talking about?

The Texans said leadership played a big part in last years draft, most of the guys were captains I think.

I don't see a whole lot of holes on our team, plenty of places where upgrades would be nice & depth is still needed. I think this draft gives us those opportunities at the most prudent positions.

Good job.

Very realistic mock, These guys should be available at the spots the Texans are picking. Guy is the only one that might go earlier.

I wouldn't change a pick.

Lewis is going to be a player. (Woodley)

A bit more history than that.

He could have declared early last year for the draft but opted to stay and improve his stock. Unfortunately, he was cited for a DUI, the third alcohol-related incident he had since 2009.

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/9...cted-among-wrs

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Notre Dame suspended star wide receiver Michael Floyd indefinitely Monday, a day after he was cited for drunken driving and authorities said his blood-alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit.

Coach Brian Kelly said the suspension will not be lifted until Floyd changes his behavior and both the legal and university discipline procedures run their course.

It was Floyd's third run-in with the law over alcohol since 2009.

I don`t really know the players, but I love the positions you picked... would`ve preferred a NT in the 2nd, but I guess there is no real value.

I only disagree with you on one point: I´m pretty sure that AJ IS getting older... other than that, I would definetly try to go WR in the first and O-line in either 2nd or 3d. NT as early as possible - then some ILB and safety depth. OLB/DE can always help if a great player is available.

Haha, good catch. I meant to say AJ is not getting younger.

I had a couple positions rated as needs- WR, NT, OLB, OG. I had to weigh individual talent versus who would be available when, and unfortunately NT ended up being selected later. Ta'amu and Poe are really the only 2 "big nasty" NTs woth considering in the 1st/early second. I think Ta'amu goes too early, and Poe would be a reach in the first but gone in the second. I am happy with Lewis though.

I like where your head's at. Unlike in past years, our starting 22 is fairly solid (with the possible exception of #2 CB. So I see this as a draft to get quality depth. And where we need that depth the most is at WR, LB, and NT. Any OL we pick better have good feet and some experience in the ZBS or we'll waste valuable time retraining him.

Something else bugs me. No one is targeting a future QB. Unless you think T.J. Yates is the future, then now is as good a time as any to snag someone to groom as GB groomed Rodgers. Now I'm not saying we'll find a golden nugget like that, but why not start looking??

Default Re: rmartin65's Half Season Mock

I like this mock, not necessarily for the players, but more for the positions.

WR in the 1st is a good call. I don't know if I would pick Floyd though. He has all the tools but I just don't know what's between his ears. Maybe Dwight Jones or Sanu would be safer.

In the 2nd I would probably go ILB or NT instead of OLB. Probably Hightower, if he's there, or maybe Franklin from Arkansas if they go ILB. If they go NT, maybe Chapman from Alabama.

In the 3rd the OG you have looks good. And, in the 4th the NT you have is OK too if they go ILB in the 2nd. Also, you have Franklin as your pick in the 5th, but I think he will be gone by the 3rd. This is where they could go OLB or FS in the 5th and then get the other in the 6th.

Overall I would be happy if they picked the players you have them picking because they all fill a depth need, and we definitely have to start looking for a replacement for AJ. Good job!

Overall, I would give this a B+. But I personally would have to go back to the drawing board with the latest news. I believe our #1 or #2 pick is QB.

Ok who? By time we pick, the name guys are gone. Do you spend a high draft pick on a maybe guy or a project? Let's discuss this.

Why would we spend our #1 or #2 pick on a QB, Schaubs hurt not dead. Even if he doesn't play this year he'll be back next year, hopefully better than ever. Like BB said, all the top QB's will be gone and the rest are varying projects. We've got other holes to fill or might be able, for the first time ever, go BPA in each round. BPA is a great way to fill depth. If we did go QB in the 1st round the best guys available to us in the mid 20's are Robert Griffin III and Nick Foles but they'd just carrying a clip board for several years to come.

Dalton was my favorite QB in last years draft. Colt has really surprised me. Both system QB's which is kinda what I feel about Yates. I will review this years class & see what I come up with, since QB was never on my shopping list.

I am hoping Lienert will be better than I expect allowing Yates even more time to develop for NFL. Both seem to have the skills

I guess my reasoning came from post somewhere stating that Schaub's injury could cause him to miss part of next season due to a long recovery time. I like Schaub as our QB but all the misinformation out there made me think we should be ready for the worst. I think a quality QB can be found in the 2nd round... I just don't know who yet.

That might have been me. I was looking at CnnnD's possible recovery scenarios and projecting that Schaub could be out until nearly this time next year. I know K. Clemens is only a stopgap pickup but with all of next year's OTAs, mini-camps, and training camp under his belt, maybe he'll be a servicable backup to Leinart. If so, we can put TJY back on the practice squad for more development. Or maybe take a second look at the kid from Rice.

The F/A QB list that was posted kind of leaves me cold. No one worth having (Flynn in G.B. or Daniel in N.O.) is going to be let go by their team without having to pay a king's ransom.
