Default Coaching Philosophy

A major problem with our coaches is inflexibility. They stubbornly refuse to make changes in the face of overwhelming evidence that something is wrong. They coach like it was 40 years ago.

The coaching staff seems to think they are all Vince Lombardi – they preach my way or the highway and are non-communicative with the players. The players try to discuss things with them and they get the same trite pabulum that the coaches feed the press.

The coaches plaster Vince Lombardi quotes in giant letters around the locker room, (which probably don’t go a long way with modern players in the first place) and then they themselves don’t follow Lombardi’s basic precepts, such as requiring the players to give 100% if they want to see the field.

Rather than a Lombardi type accountability, our coaches make excuses for the players. After the Bills game they immediately said many of the sacks were due to the running backs rather than the line. Wade was asked to comment on the number of sacks immediately following the next game, and the Chronicle quoted him as saying something like “we played pretty well, I don’t think the line was responsible for many sacks, but we’ll have to look at tape to see”. It sure doesn’t take long for the line to grasp at the excuses offered by the coaching staff. After the Bengals game the coaches offered excuse was that the crowd noise caused the tackles to be slow off the ball because they couldn’t hear the snap count. That’s a great excuse – it can be used for half the games!

So what’s the excuse this week? The sun was in their eyes? The line played horribly, plain and simple.

Do you think Lombardi would have Riley in game after game? Wouldn’t he require Riley to be in shape? The only reason that Wade is in every play is that he signed a $10 million bonus. Must be nice to know that since you are guaranteed a lot of money you don’t have to perform. Isn’t that backwards?

There are other examples – apparently the knock against Armstrong is that sometimes he runs the wrong routes. Just as apparently, he is our best receiver at catching the ball. Shouldn’t the coaches take the responsibility to do what it takes to teach him the offense? He’s a first down machine!

The coaches seem to think that since they have a philosophy that they are infallible. They refuse admit to a mistake when empirical evidence clearly doesn’t support their decisions. It is really just the opposite, doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results is not “intelligent”.

I'm not a big fan of Lombardi type football in the modern era, but if the coaches profess that philosophy they should follow through.

Capers is so seems to think that his plan for a winning team is the holy grail. If he had the coaching acumen of a Pop Warner volunteer coach, he would realize that the game plan isn't working and that he should change this Great Plan to incorporate the strengths of the players - such as they are. Furthermore, he should definitely start pulling some of those offensive line players - especially Victor Riley who is worthless - and put anyone in their place. Who knows? They could be better and they certainly couldn't be worse.

Capers is too married into systems instead of forming systems around his talent. From refusing to put Dunta on the best WR (we are a right and left corner team says Dom) ....um, okaaay lets let Drew Bennett beat our second best corner while Dunta covers a friggin' rookie - to Peek dropping in coverage over and over (hello!!! Peek is a pass rusher) - to forcing players like Riley to play LT who have never played the position and thinking that he will somehow do alright here but can be coached up into 'the system'.

There is no excuse. Not for this one. They played a 1-3 team, a team they soundly defeated twice last year. The Texans should not have lost, much less lost so badly. The sad fact is that everybody in the world can see that the problem starts with the O-line. Until they can pull off a game where Carr is not sacked, hurried, and knocked down constantly, they will continue to lose by 10 - 20 points.

That is an excellent example of what I'm talking about.

Same with Armstrong. Why in the world doesn't he see the field more? I've wondered that for two years. Sure DC only has time to look at his first option, sometimes his second but my gosh man, find a way to utilize any of the positives that we have. And IMO Armstrong is a positive that has not been utilized. It all boils down to our management. Be it Capers or Casserly or both. I think the best thing to have done instead of firing Palmer was to fire Capers, promote Palmer to HC and Pendry to OC. I was happy with the choice of Capers as our inaugural HC, but I am now in total agreement with the people that said he would never get us to the Super Bowl. He peaked with this team awhile back.

That pretty much says it all. This team is limiting it's players by not taking advantage of the strength of the players. This season is slipping away, but, i feel a new coaching staff will bring some positive energy to this team and success is not that far away.

...good post--Caper's nickname should be concrete because that is where his ways of doing things are entrenched! Other NFL teams have to be 'licking' their chops with unbelieving wide eyes as they game plan against the Texans! It's no longer a secret that what you see weekend and weekout with the Texans is not going to change as Caper's is convinced that he is right. If things don't go well, it's because of execution/lack of focus/ or whatever and-never never never-is it because Caper's is wrong.
