Default Question: When Barwin chased McCoy out of bounds

When Barwin chased McCoy out of bounds on their last scoring drive McCoy went out behind the line of scrimmage. Does that count as a sack? I seem to recall that Carr frequently scrambled out of bounds behind the line of scrimmage and that this added heavily to his sack numbers. If so is it credited to the guy who chased him out of bounds or is it just an ambiguous "team sack" or something?

I wonder if the graphic on the broadcast was wrong. He clearly went out behind the blue line of scrimmage graphic. I thought it was by well over a yard, possibly two.

The announcers mentioned it would go down as a sack for the Texans.

I believe that's a Team Sack.

IF it gets credited as a sack, or... the blue line was wrong on the TV...which is possible.

Was this on the Browns TD drive? Like near the 5 yard line? Because on that run he was given a very generous spot IMO.

Just re-watched that part of the game...

OK, first and foremost let's get a good handle on where the ball is spotted prior to the play where McCoy scrambles out of bounds.

1. At 6:17 left to play in the 4th Qtr., Browns are just about a foot short of the Texans' 5-yard line on a 1st & Goal.

2. Ball is snapped, a run play that ends up being ruled down between the 3 and 4-yard line. Blue line appears to be correct.

3. On 2nd & Goal, ball is snapped...McCoy is chased out of bounds by JJ Watt.

HORRIBLE SPOT. Should have been at least a 1-yard loss on the play. The ball was in McCoy's right hand, and his left shoulder isn't even at the original line of scrimmage.

4. On 3rd and Goal the ball is spotted at the 2-yard line!!!!!!

McCoy was given two extra yards, making it an incredible 1 yard gain on what was supposed to be a 1-yard loss and a Texans team sack due to pressure by JJ Watt.

On the replay of that 2nd & Goal play, they used a reverse end zone camera from above.

It looks like McCoy's right foot is out of bounds and on the ground at the 5-yard line. Ball is in his right hand and is clearly a foot or two BEHIND the 5-yard line. The backfield ref comes up and spots the ball at the Texans' 2-yard line giving him a gain of a yard-and-half when the dude was out BEHIND the 5 -yard line.

An absolutely horrible spot. Atrocious.

Next play, Cribbs catches a TD pass from McCoy. Replay shows Colt's mom and dad celebrating in the stands. Colt's mom is very pretty. I'm just sayin'....she's easy on the eyes.

I didn't see that sack registered in the ESPN box score. That would have been Barwin's 2nd sack I believe and they only have one recorded for him.

Reed - 2
Cush - 1
Barwin - 1

Nothing about a team sack either. Barwin is credited with a tackle for loss... but that can't be it, can it?

No. They spotted the ball so that McCoy was given a yard gain. Bad spot. No sack.

I believe that in the NFL, if the QB runs out of bounds, a sack is assigned to the one pursuing the QB, but not in NFL statistics......in "adjusted sack rates" of 3rd party statisticians.

I do know that this is how it works in the NCAA, but officially as dictated by the NCAA. Furthermore, in the NCAA, intentional grounding also leads to assigning a sack to the pursuing player.

What I found out, interestingly enough, when I researched this a few years ago is that the NFL Rule Book does not contain the "rules" concerning sacks........because these are only considered stats by the NFL.

NFL intentional grounding is also included in the "adjusted sack rates" of 3rd party statisticians.

At the game they announced it as a gain. They spotted the ball at the 2, but there was no way he got there. He was out at the 5. He might have stretched the ball forward as he ran out, but no way the dude has 9 foot arms. I think I would notice.

There were a ton of bad spots in this game including ones in our favor. The line judge was one of the worst Ive ever seen.

yep, that's what I was going to say. Watt won't get the sack primarily because the spot was awful....but yeah you get a sack if you chase a qb out of bounds behind the LOS.

The Texans were credited with only four sacks (they lost one to a horrible spot by the officials), but they had eight hurries and numerous hits on the second-year quarterback.
