Nebraska's DT Jared Crick Out for the Season

Nebraska All-American defensive tackle Jared Crick's college football career is over. The Huskers announced on Wednesday that Crick, a senior, has a torn pectoral muscle that will keep him out for the rest of the season.

Crick was a second-team All-American last year and a two-time first-team All-Big 12 honoree. He has been projected as a first-round NFL pick and ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. has him ranked him No. 18 overall on his most recent 2012 Big Board.

In a statement released by the school, coach Bo Pelini praised Crick as a team leader and "a young man who has represented this program in a first-class manner throughout his career." He noted Crick had decided to return to Nebraska to finish his senior season and earn his degree, rather than turn pro.

"I feel extremely bad for Jared," Pelini said. "Jared has a bright future in front of him on the field at the professional level. I know he will bounce back from this, and become a stronger player and person."

Crick's numbers were a little down this season, and he missed the Wyoming game after suffering a head injury against Washington. He finished the season with 22 tackles and one sack in five games.

Crick had 9½ sacks in both 2009 and 2010 and ranks eighth on Nebraska's all-time sack list. He also recorded 35 career tackles for loss.

I know he was a prospect for the Texans to possibly be a NT. He's listed at 6'6 285, but could bulk up even more in the NFL. This ought to hurt his draft value and drop him to the bottom of the 1st, possibly into the 2nd.

I can see Crick as a 3-4 DE but not as a NT. This will really hurt Nebraska.

FYI, Marcus Forston-DT from Miami is also out for the year with an injury. I thought he had a much better chance at 3-4 NT for the Texans.

Damn, feel bad for him. But he still has a bright future, and wouldn't be surprise if got drafted in first round, maybe 2nd round too. 19.5 sacks for a DT is a lot.

And yeah, he'd be a 3-4 DEnd, 4-3 DT.

Why not? He may not be prototypical for a 3-4 NT, but Wade likes the 300 pound NT and Crick is just 15 pounds shy of that. He may be a little tall for it, but Wade could probably work with him.

I think 2nd round would be good for Crick.

He is rated a little better than he is because he looked so good playing next to Suh.

I don't watch Nebraska, but he actually had more sacks last year without Suh(9.5) than he did with Suh(9).

Eh it's not just his weight. It's his bulk. A 6'2" guy who weighs 300 is a lot bulkier than a 6'6" guy who weighs the same.

Crick is built like a 34 DE. I think he is perfect for the scheme. I think he would have trouble as an interior tackle.

I love his size and I love his skills. But he translates a ton better as a 34 DE.

Mario Williams is 6'6 280ish, maybe Crick could be an OLB...?

His skill set just doesn't translate well to either NT or OLB in a 34.
