Default An Opponent's Plan For a Texans' Team Without AJ

Here was a plan proposed by NATIONALFOOTBALLPOST'S Matt Bowen prior to the Raiders game. Sound familiar?
Quote:

MINUS JOHNSON, HOW WOULD YOU GAME PLAN TEXANS?

I'm coming after Schaub. What's your plan?

We can say Calvin Johnson is the No.1 offensive weapon in the league right now. The production tells us that. However, when it comes to running routes and having the ability to separate (plus impact defensive game plans), no one in the NFL does it better than Andre Johnson.

How does this Texans' offense change with the WR out (for at least three weeks) with a hamstring injury? Let's think like a coach and change our game prep. Make the proper adjustments and script a game plan for the Texans.

Here is what I am going to do in order to attack Matt Schaub and this Houston offense with Johnson sidelined...

With Johnson out, I'm using an eight-man front in early down and distance situations to limit Foster in the run game.

- Drop a safety into the box. Use the SS (or the FS with a weak side rotation) to create an eight-man front. The Texans want to see a 7-man front and ride RB Arian Foster, but I’m not going to let that happen. Bring the safety down to limit the production in the downhill running game. If Schaub wants to challenge my secondary, that's fine, because I’m not going to let Foster consistently move the sticks. Instead, play the run and force Houston into adverse down and distance situations.

- Play press-coverage on the outside with a single-high safety in the middle of the field (Think Cover 1 here). I’m going to tell my corners to play with an outside shade, get hands on the WRs at the line of scrimmage and challenge them to beat press-looks. Without Johnson in the game to convert routes down the field, I have no issue playing aggressively vs. Kevin Walter and Jacoby Jones. Funnel the WRs to my help in the middle of the field.

- Use the blitz fronts—both zone and man. With Johnson on the field, you can get caught if the blitz doesn’t get home. Here, I’m going to take some risks. And when I get into some third and medium situations (3rd and 4-7), I might have to play some Cover 0 (blitz-man with no safety help). Align the corners with an inside shade (in an off-man position) and send seven and eight-man pressure. Plus, when I go zone pressure, use some CB "Cats" (CB blitz) and get creative.

- Take away the TE position. This is where I expect Schaub to work the ball. If I see production, then I bring my sub package on the field (nickel) and use an extra corner on Owen Daniels. Take away the short to intermediate route tree inside of the numbers. Even without Johnson, the TEs in Houston still can cause issues vs. a safety or a LB in coverage. Might have to make an adjustment there.

- Have to play some coverage. I am looking at 2-Man and even some Tampa 2 when I have the Texans in 3rd and long situations. This is where you will see the deep dig, some combination routes and vertical concepts to move the sticks. Daniels can work the middle of the field vs. Tampa 2, so I am going to lean towards 2-Man. Underneath man-coverage with the defender playing inside with a trail-technique.

What’s your plan to limit the Texans’ from a defensive perspective? Let me know. And, on Sunday, check out the Raiders. Because I am very curious to see how they game plan Schaub, Foster and the rest of this Houston lineup.
We may see this formula again........especially, if Kubiak does not make some successful compensatory adjustments for the loss of AJ.

I see the Texans getting abused like they did in Pittsburgh a couple
years ago. The Texans suck on the road, and they're AT
Baltimore.

Get your popcorn ready...

It's all about adjustments. The defense makes adjustments when Andre is out and we have to make our own adjustments to that accordingly. We need to call more blitz beaters and screens.

I see the Texans being very competitive just like they've been in every single game this year. This team isn't remotely comparable to a team that played the steelers a couple of years ago. Over the coarse of a NFL season every team is going to lose games they should win and win games they should lose. This week we lost a game we should've won and next week we could win a game that on paper we should lose...however regardless of the outcome, I highly doubt we'll get our teeth kicked in.

Agreed. I think it will be a competitive game and we can potentially beat the Ravens. We'll need some TO's that we can actually capitalize off of though this time.

Popcorn's a bit stale.

Steelers in 2008 had a QB...

Flacco ain't bout shit. Stop the run game like we did vs. OAK, this will be close. Turn Flacco into the scrub that he is and come with CONSTANT blind side pressure. He's horrid at reading defenses. Oher does not fare well vs. a lot of pressure, as well.

Smith and Evans deep is the key to BAL's pass game, as well as Rice. The Ravens want to force TOs, point blank. Find hot reads early and often and screen Arian. They plan on covering Foster with Suggs and Johnson? Let them. The Ravens can be beat. I'm not saying the Texans will win, but this isn't the 2007 Pats or the 08 Steelers.

Ravens rout the Texans if the Texans turn the ball over a ton. Otherwise, this is another 4th quarter game.

Maybe, but luckily for us, in this division we can trip over our own feet and still fall across the finish line.

If I've learned anything from this team over the last 5 seasons, they're good
for AT LEAST ONE game when they get their teeth kicked in.

Baltimore and Tennessee are just the kind of teams to do this to the
Texans in their home stadiums, while the Texans' heads are spinning
from the losses of Dre, Mario, and the Raiders game.

We have NEVER seen this group, coaches included, show any type
of mental toughness. They float through the early part of the game,
look up at the scoreboard, and say "OH, SNAP! We spent so much
time working on our stats for The Probowl, that we're running out
of time to actually win the game!"

The ebb and flow of a Texans season, is illustrated by the microcosm
of the game. Against teams serious about winning, the Texans have
always crapped out. They just make sure to "look good" while
taking the "L." I guess they have a higher incentive package
in their contracts for Probowls made than playoff appearances.

You'd think Kubiak would have anticipated this and been ready with a good game plan. Didn't happen. More blitz beaters and screens should have been called yesterday. Didn't happen. Kubiak doesn't seem to be able to make game time adjustments.

I honestly think the coaches did a decent job with the game plan minus AJ. There Just isn't a lot of adjustments to your oline getting blown up. We ran screens, from a lot of different sets to a lot of different players. Hell, we had them dead on one if a raider doesn't make a hell of a tackle. I think a draw or two would have been nice, but other wise I think exception of the game plan was the biggest problem
